Can Barajas get the ball back to Ollie, please?

Ollie has enough to worry about without having to dive all over the place for the return throw.

I'll gladly settle for Good Ollie/Bad Ollie

as opposed to Bad Ollie/Worse Ollie

He looked pretty decent today.

No hits, two walks (two in the third, back-to-back), was constantly throwing 90, 91, and supposedly got it as high as 93 (I think that was in the first or second).

Yeah, I'll take it.

When he walked those batters, he was throwing in that weird pseudo-sidearm motion that he sometimes goes to (for some reason) that always gets him in trouble. Wright came in to talk to him, and he was still doing it, but he got a fly ball to end the inning. The next inning, if I remember right, he was throwing “normal” again.

by Brooklyn Dodgers Mets Fan on Mar 13, 2010 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...

on the side-arm motion … I don’t know if you’re old enough to remember, but Jerry Koosman had this slick side-arm motion he’d go to occasionally against lefties and got all this extra movement on both his fast ball and curve ball. It was a great weapon for Koos. The thing is, I guess, Koosman had better control of his mechanics and was probable more mentally tough, if that’s the right wording, compared to Ollie, who seems to get distracted and out of sorts at times.

Can't say I've ever really noticed from watching the "old-time" clips of him, or whatever (not old enough to have seen him live or anything)

But, yeah, Perez is no Koosman. If he was, holy crap, I wish. That’s the problem with the front office- they think he can be Koosman.

An idea:

We kidnap him. Venezuelan baseball is over, so I’m sure Josh Thole’s bodyguards have been released. No one would expect it.

Didn't you know?

Venezuela is actually a very nice place and if you take precautions against kidnapping, you’re a xenophobe or something. At least that’s what I heard from “anonymous” on here a while ago.

by gogomets on Mar 13, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I've been to Venezuela, and this is not so.

Got into an argument with a “cop” ( a 19 year old kid with a machine gun ), because he was harrassing a lady who was a hotel employee. He knew who she was, but he insisted on seeing her permit to work. She kept telling him “how many days in a row are you going to put me thru the same crap”…..I stayed quiet observing the whole argument unfold in Spanish, and when I had enough I intervened speaking in spanish ( I am Cuban ). THe kid must have assumed I was an american tourist ( a gringo ) , and when he heard me talk in spanish he turned pale and walked away, but not before he told the poor woman, OK we’ll talk later….

Later I found out he wanted her to give him a percent of the money she made in exchange for leaving her alone, aka extortion. When I asked her why she let this go on, her answer was, they are all the same…the guys with the guns.

you know what I'm sayin' ?

by fxcarden on Mar 13, 2010 5:16 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

you know, this is pretty childish

I explicitly said that Thole’s girlfriend would be reasonable to take precautions about where she went, or even get a security guy to accompany her if she were feeling endangered. What I objected to was the ludicrous paranoia of staying holed up in the hotel room the whole time. Are you seriously saying taking that the elevator to the fucking hotel lobby is like asking to be in the next Black Hawk Down? Air your nonsense someplace else, and leave me out of it.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
