It seems like Jacobs hasn't been seeing the field much.

That can only be a good sign.

One indication of who’s favored to win the 1B or bench job:

Murphy 21
Jacobs 11
Carter 9

Cora 15

I believe most of Jacobs AB's have been as a DH as well

Ouch, Maine's getting lit up

At least Johan pitched well.

Maine looked awful.

I hope he’s not hurt

Maine is, and has been, D-O-N-E

For the life of me, I don’t know what the fascination is with this guy, both by the Mets and most fans. He pitched a great game once. So did Alay Soler.

Agreed

From 2006-2008, Maine’s stats:

72 GS, 421 IP, 3.93 ERA, 3.92 FIP, 8 K/9, 3.7 BB/9.

Maine’s track record was that of a serviceable middle-of-the-rotation starter, and he performed like that pretty consistently. I don’t know if he’s “done,” but he was a valuable arm for the Mets for three seasons at a very low price. A return to form from Maine would be a very nice addition, indeed.

Yeah. No doubt.

Doesn’t change the fact that right now he blows.

by fxcarden on Mar 14, 2010 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Right now it doesn't count either, so I'm not too concerned about his results.

I just hope he’s not injured and still being run out there.

I wouldn't say he blows

He’s basically been a league averagish pitcher when healthy, aside from 2007, when he was actually pretty good.

!

at five inning per outing with 100 pitches per, with a repaired shoulder, and no out pitch, I’d say he blows, but you’re right….he may just suck instead.

you know what I'm sayin' ?

by fxcarden on Mar 14, 2010 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh?

He’s averaged just a bit over 5.5 innings per outing (including 3 career relief appearances), which is again, not too far off from league average. I won’t debate that he hasn’t been healthy, and when battling health problems struggled to go deep into games, but he’s been reasonably effective when he’s pitched.

And I’m not sure what you mean by “Doesn’t have an out pitch”. He doesn’t have a dominant secondary pitch, but missing bats has never been a problem. 2006-2008 his K/9 rates were 7.10, 8.48, and 7.84. The projection systems also universally agree that his strikeout rate will be decent, between 7.34 and 7.43. In terms of fangraphs pitch values, both his fastball and slider are above average. He’s clearly a fastball dominant pitcher, but in the last four years, only once has his fastball been below average, ditto his slider (and in different years, 2006 for the slider and 2008 for the fastball).

Well hey, listen....

I hope I’m wrong because I want this team to win so at least they can shake off the demons of the past few years, but I do believe that Maine can hurt this team more than he can help it. Omar should have gone elsewhere with the money they gave to Maine, but that’s just my opinion.

If proven wrong, I’ll meet you and Syler at the Adam Rubin Lobby for game one of the division series, and the first round is on me (assuming, of course I am still alive then because one day this team will kill me).

you know what I'm sayin' ?

by fxcarden on Mar 14, 2010 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Hah, fair enough

I’m not necessarily saying that I expect him to be a major contributor, but that’s different from saying he sucks. If he makes 20 starts, I expect they’ll be better than 20 starts the Mets could have gotten from most other available sources. I also think that he’s a decent candidate to move to the bullpen if a better SP option becomes available, since he can miss bats with his fastball.

Anyone know much about streams?

I’m newly cable-less and have had zero luck finding ST streams. For football it was pretty easy and my team’s blog was fairly good with posting stream links (mostly due to blackouts).

Usually, Maine performs good against the Marlins

In 57.2 career innings (10 starts), he’s got a 3.12 ERA against them.

I was looking at his splits, and this surprised me. A lot:
Washington Nationals
70.2 IP (13 GS), 4.20 ERA
Philadelphia Phillies
59.2 IP (10 GS), 2.56 ERA

Perez is always called the “Philly killer”, or whatever, but in reality, Maine actually has better numbers against them (mind you, Perez does have three more starts and about 15 more innings than Maine, but still…)

Small sample size

you can’t draw conclusions from 70.2 IP, 59.2 IP or 57.2 IP

I just did.

The number support the fact that Maine has been better in his career against Philly than Perez, who is commonly cited as being a “Philly killer”, because of his left-handedness. 1,000 IP would support that, or 10 IP would support that, doesn’t matter.

Perez completely dominated the Phillies in 2008

He allowed like on run in 26.2 innings

However, aside from 2008, he’s been god awful against them in his career

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
