Eric, please don't get me all excited and giddy ...
with all those great spring training statistics. It’s not fair. Yes, hope springs eternal … especially in spring training. But after the last three (four?) seasons of extreme disappointment and utter agony, I find it hard to let this team fool me once again. It’s so tempting to think that, in light of how ST has gone so far, that we will compete with the Phillies, but I just can’t allow myself to go there just yet.

Now, let's hope we can keep up a lot of those absurdly good numbers...

Why are you concerned with Washington's AAA team?
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the street: wheredotheygo?!?!?

I still catch myself thinking that the Tides are the Mets’ AAA team now and then.

Is it just me, or was Niese throwing harder than usual today?
I thought I saw a fastball hit 94, and two cutters, one at 90 and the other at 91. If he can live at or even a tad below those velo’s, his long term projections may be underselling him. That’s impressive for a four-pitch lefty. Love seeing the groundballs too.

Yeah saw those too
They seemed to have more horizontal break that I’m used to from his slow curve, but he’s always been good at manipulating the movement on his breaking balls. That first one he through to Pujols that just dropped onto the inside corner was pretty nasty.

Yeah I guess they were more
11.30 to 5.30! A fast one like that followed up with a slow 12-6 (or vice versa) is a nice combo.
Yup
And the best part is, even if Nieve has kind of fallen back in the 5th SP race, Tak2 has more than made up for it, and Figgy’s been no slouch either. I’m almost worried, because it could be a tough decision for the brass to make, and we know they’re not very good with those.

When Maine goes down (knock on wood), we could concievably have 4 lefties in the rotation.
I really think Figgy is destined for a bullpen slot this year, which I actually think would be a good place for him.

They actually aren't that bad with hard decisions
because you can’t get them too wrong. Where they really have trouble is the easy ones…
Kinda gettin squeezed though lol

I suppose that's always
the danger with big curves, but I thought that was definitely a strike. Argh Tejada!
He threw two fastballs in that AB that looked like strikes to me
Then the one he gets the call on, Barajas has to miss it of course. Bah, now he’s getting it though.

Just to let you guys who can't watch the games know
If you have an iPhone, the MLB At Bat app does have audio for a lot of these spring training games. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have gameday until the season starts. It’s well worth whatever the price for it is, or you could just jailbreak your phone, download installous and get every app free, but that’s your choice.
What?

I'm not advocating pushing prospects
I think Fernando should spend his time in AAA unless he absolutely kills it, but I’m really starting to think that he might be the third best outfielder we have in the organization. Not that that’s saying much because after Beltran and Bay it’s between Pagan, an oft injured back up who’s never had a chance to start a full year, and Francouer, who can be solid or just awful. I’m gonna be optimistic and say Beltran comes back and plays like he did in 2008 and we have a killer outfield of Bay, Beltran and Fernando by the end of the year and going into 2011.
It’s a damned shame that Fernando’s last name doesn’t start with a B.

The fact that his first name is really Jesus makes up for it

With Reyes out for opening day
I think its more worth the risk to break camp with him than if he weren’t. More than proving he can produce, Fernando needs time at a level he doesn’t need to constantly adjust to, if anything just so he can get into a comfortable routine and stay healthy. I’d also love for him to draw a walk at some point, but he clearly hasn’t been overmatched by any spring training pitchers so far, and the potential reward with Fernando is much higher than with Pagan or Francoeur.
I’m starting to think the same thing a bit more with Davis, too. Until they get Reyes back, there’s already so much risk that they just can’t outscore their Starting Pitchers (not to mention defense, if they don’t carry Tejada). With the offense complete, they possibly can outscore their starters and get into the bullpen, which I still think has a ton of upside depending on who they break camp with. That was the formula in 2006 and needs to be the formula with this team too. Its risky, but without Reyes and Beltran, I’d carry and start either Davis or Fernando and give them until Reyes comes back to impress me. If Reyes is only out a week or so, it shouldn’t be a problem, but if its getting into the 15-20 games range, I’d pick one and stick with him.

IMO, the priority is what helps the Mets most in the Long Term
Let’s face it., it’s going to take an awful lot of things to go right for the Mets to even compete for the playoffs in 2010. The Mets should be focused on developing their young talent, and that’s best served by giving Davis & Fernando time in AAA. Hopefully, they will be in a position to help the Mets contend in 2011.
Hah, maybe spoke too soon on Pagan
That was a nice AB for him, worked the count nicely.

If it's to be seen as an omen at all
I just took the 2010 WS in OOTP with the Mets, and thanks to an injury to Adrian Gonzalez, Ike Davis was my starting 1B in the WS. Only he and Thole survived my mass post-2009 cull.

It's about time Pagan starts distinguishing himself in Spring Training like he always does.
