interest for what?

is this some sort of horrifying way to tell us reyes is gonna be out a lot longer?

they're probably going to trade him

for selfishly continuing to be injured.

Knock on wood that doesn't happen.

At least Guzman is no David Eckstein, though.

Which is why

Its kinda amazing that Fartinez didnt get traded this winter.

by mets81 on Mar 17, 2010 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I like the idea

It gives us a strong replacement at short while Reyes is out, who will become an even stronger backup when (if) Reyes returns.

It makes either Cora or Castillo expendable as well.

8 million + Mejia?

they won't trade Mejia

Not now that he’s going to be the setup man

imagine if they did, though

Strasburg & Mejia could be a nasty 1-2 punch in a few years. I think if the Mets made that trade, I’d just become a Nationals fan.

Expendable?

Its makes Cora or Castillo expendable to who? Castillo’s been on the block for 2 straight years. And you think the Mets would eat Cora’s $2 million to trade for a player who makes $8 million this year? How good does Bobby Crosby look now for $1 million.

by TheKid08 on Mar 16, 2010 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

Just a thought..

But maybe the Nats would eat lets say 2 mil, then we could play him for ~1 month till Reyes is back, and possibly spin him to another team?

I don’t hate this as long as we aren’t sending a whole lot of value back. Doesn’t Washington have a nice young SS? Maybe they want to free the spot up for him.

by njk237 on Mar 17, 2010 12:50 AM EDT reply actions

and by spin him to another team

i meant guzman, not reyes, just incase you thought i was a lunatic

by njk237 on Mar 17, 2010 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

you're still a lunatic

Being on the hook to Guzman for net $6 million is hardly a situation any team would want to sign on to for free, much less trade anything of value for.

by anonymous on Mar 17, 2010 3:37 AM EDT up reply actions

a couple things

first, i never said we’d get any real value back for him
second, it wouldn’t necessarily be 6 million, if he had already played X games and the Mets were eating a piece of that as well. What if it was 3?

Guzman can be worth a couple wins, and I think he can play well especially in a short span. His defense, I’d guess, is no worse than Cora’s. Personally, with Beltran out as well to start I’m concerned with the offensive output. Omar should have gotten someone mentioned above, but he didn’t. So, under the right circumstances (giving up, say Eddie Kunz with WSH eating some of his salary) I think this move might not be so bad.

Thanks for the snark though.

by njk237 on Mar 17, 2010 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

If this were a straight swap for Castillo

and the Nats also paid part of Guzman’s salary. Then I’d do it. No way this happesn though, so pass.

by mets81 on Mar 17, 2010 9:12 AM EDT reply actions

this was the first thing that came to my mind too

but the only real advantage to that trade is that his contract ends in 2010 instead of 2011. Both are below average fielders with no power, although Luis can at least get on base at a useful clip. Guzman actually walks at a lower rate than Frenchy does, and thats pretty hard to do. I’d probably make the deal just to get castillo’s contract off the books earlier, but i’d in no way consider him an upgrade.

well he's a mets beat writer

it’s not like some random guy off the street tweeted it. If he wrote an article for a paper and quoted “unnamed mets associates”, would it really be any different?

Hilarious

Guzman is way overpaid. He is blocking Ian Desmond, and coming off a shoulder injury. Just yesterday I almost posted here what i had read on a nats blog, that Mike Rizzo, GM, had overruled Riggleman, who had said he might try Desmond as a utility guy all over, including the outfield. Rizzo said no, he will be fulltime ss, either in washington or in AAA. That’s the way these decisions should be made, by a GM who isn’t acting out of fright for his job, overruling a manager.

To top it off, some comment from a Nats fan on the blog said “Hey, maybe Minaya will panic over reyes thyroid and we can get something for Guzman.” I thought no way, but did think it was funny.

Unbelievable. He is owed $8 million. he refused to move to 2b, so the nats (and this I thought wasn’t that smart, since they won’t contend this year), signed Kennedy to play 2b. Supposedly they worried that if Desmond flopped or Guzman wasn’t ready, they needed Kennedy.

And while some reports have him ok, he himself said he hasn’t cut loose on his throws yet.

He has had some babip-inflated ok years (year?) with the bat, but mostly is an out machine. He doesn’t walk. Riggleman said he would bat 2nd this year. Rizzo must be thinking i gotta call Omar before Rigs makes this guy leadoff.

Hell, maybe Rizzo or the Nats floated this past this dude to gauge reaction. I hope it is bs. It’s crazy.

Obviously

Omar wants Guzman because he’s latino. That’s why he didn’t go after Lopez….

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
