Open Thread: Mets vs Red Sox, 3/17/2010

Mike Pelfrey takes the hill in Fort Myers against John Lackey and the Red Sox. Pelfrey will be followed by Tobi Stoner, Bobby Parnell, Kiko Calero, Jenrry Mejia, and Elmer Dessens.

The game is on NESN at 1:05pm and can be seen on MLB.tv. It is also on WEEI via Gameday audio. If you don't have either MLB package you can still follow on regular Gameday.

The notes.

  • The Mets will wear "lucky" green Irish hats today in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Yesterday was the Mets' only off day of the spring.
  • Mike Pelfrey is 0-1 this spring with a 9.00 ERA (four earned runs/5.2 innings).
  • The Mets have hit 13 home runs over their last eight games.
  • Including today, there are 20 days until Opening Day. The Mets begin the 2010 regular season at Citi Field Monday, April 5 at 1:10 p.m. vs. Florida.

And here is the current roster breakdown for the 46 players in big league camp (including 11 non-roster invitees).

• Pitchers - 19 total (four non-roster)
- Lefthanded - Six (one non-roster)
- Righthanded - 13 (three non-roster)
• Catchers - Five total (one non-roster)
• Infielders - 11 total (four non-roster)
• Outfielders - 11 total (two non-roster)

I agree

Especially since this is about as close to a big league lineup as he’s going to see in spring training.

Pelf is changing speeds nice

and his slider looks less like a spinner. Nice improvements. Maybe he can increase his K/9 for next year

yup just gotta hope reyes comes back soon

so we have at least some competence in our middle infield.

Omar math

5 + 4 = 9 and throw away the fraction.

yea I did the math, it bothered me

4 earned runs / 5.2 innings = .769 * 9innings = 6.92 era

While it still isnt a pretty number, I figured its better then looking at 9..

Have you seen the St Patrick's Day advert on the mets.com homepage?

They make it sound like the most boring day of the year. Especially Jason Bay, who is like Droopy.

Has Pelf

Hmm not sure

I only tuned in in the third inning and I’m half-watching/half-working

by deadspy3 on Mar 17, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I think so

Looks like an 84 mph pitch, he’s using as his change, seems to cut a bit.

by acerimusdux on Mar 17, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

He also threw 74-76 mph

slider quite a bit. Does MIke have three pitches now.

by Delgado on Mar 17, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup

Yeah he threw a lot of first pitch breaking balls for strikes.

The splitter didn’t have a ton of movement, but he could throw it for strikes and the speed difference was effective in keeping hitters off balance.

by acerimusdux on Mar 17, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't see as many sliders as his curve.

I’m watching it again on NESN, and it seems like he threw an awful lot of them in the 1st.

I remember last year ...

when everybody was raving about Pelfrey’s new back-door fast ball that he would throw off the inside corner to lefties and which would – with “Greg Maddox-like” movement – tail back in for a strike. Then the 2009 real season started, and I didn’t see anything that resembled anything that Greg Maddox throw.

So, forgive me for my skepticism.

Oy, and now they're just giving him 1 inning

Unless he’s going and throwing 30 pitches in the pen, that could be a troubling sign. At least he faced three good hitters this time, Cameron, Reddick, and Scutaro

If Omar and Jerry have differing views on Mejia's immediate future

do you think Jerry might be trying to force Omar’s hand by deliberately not stretching Mejia out?

by deadspy3 on Mar 17, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

If stuff like that is happening

the mets seriously need to restructure their organization and give pinkslips to both. I never thought I’d say this, but Omar is coming off reasonable in this.

It will certainly make sense to try to flip some pieces at the deadline

if the Mets are out of it. Trade Cora, Francouer, Perez (if he has an amazing first half), bring up Tejada, Jeebus, Niese or whoever.

by deadspy3 on Mar 17, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah that's kinda what I was thinking

They’re really taking a hard look at Fernando, even if they don’t plan to break camp with him, it seems pretty obvious he’s still very much in the short term plans. The only three prospects with 20+ ABs are Fernando, Ike, and Ruben.

The thing is, if those three have any trade value at all we really should be in the hunt.

That's probably right

But stranger things have happened. One of them could have a career year in an otherwise middling season for the rest of the squad.

I can’t ever remember following a camp like this where so many young players looked so good, even in such a short period

1984ish

Not that there are any youngsters as good as Straw and Gooden, and Strawberry was heading into his second year, but so much young talent. Gooden was 19. Strawberry 23. Sid Fernandez 21. Darling 23. Mitchell 22. Watching that team build up to 1986 was a lot of fun. 1985 and the race with the Cards. The Strawberry home run in extra innings off Ken Daley that hit the clock, with the Mets winning the darling/Tudor duel.

OK, stop me I am getting nostalgic.

I still remember where I was. The Torn Hat bar in New Jersey. Now known as simply the Hat . Formerly Giblins.

Yeah I agree with that

If we fall out of contention and Frenchy has a good year he may be nice trade bait for something for the future and we can see Jeebus in the second half

by Delgado on Mar 17, 2010 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

I'd think he's more of an offseaon trade chip

If he’s playing well, I’d have to think the Mets will be buyers.
