Mike Jacobs, Emergency Catcher
According to Adam Rubin, the Mets have asked Mike Jacobs to catch to increase his versatility. Jacobs hasn't caught full-time in about six years and didn't impress defensively back then. Chances are he won't appear behind the plate at all this season.
Regardless, it's nice to see the organization looking to improve the usefulness of its players, even if it likely won't yield any positive results. Should they do something similar with Daniel Murphy, like having him play the corner OF spots, 3B and even 2B, it might turn into a value-added endeavor.

I think Bowman will likely be traded at some point.
Hopefully he plays well at third in AAA so we can get something for him.

Who knows, he's not cleared to throw yet so I'd guess he can't really do anything.
It will be interesting to see how he’s used in Buffalo this year assuming he doesn’t end up needing Tommy John.

That post made me want to hit something
Because the reason they’re asking him to catch is that “Jacobs looks like he’s the leading candidate for the final bench spot with the Mets.”
Agreed
This organization cant seem to get out of their own way. They get fixed on a player and make excuses to retain them. Where is the evaluation system here? Jacobs is in a steep offensive decline, his defense at 1st and C has always been lampooned and now hes going to get the job over Chris Carter? A guy who appears to be serviceable at 2 positions and shown the ability to come in late and rake.
Unbelievable. I like Jacobs but its time to go. I actually think Murph could use some time in AAA myself but I wouldnt be disappointed to see him opening day. Jacobs brings nothing to the table
Best I can tell, the Mets are determined to lead the majors in solo home runs.
Wins are obviously low on their list of priorities.

That actually sounds like mets type logic doesn't it?
Last year we were last in home runs and we sucked, therefor we get more homeruns we suck less.

On one hand the idea of versatility is good
on the other hand why the f**k did they bring in 5 catchers if they were just going to turn around and use the fact that one guy caught six years ago to justify putting him on the bench over of a better player who actually has real positional versatility? So we have all these catchers but their so bad they’re going to pretend they might actually use Jacobs as a catcher?

Agreed
It’s almost like they like the idea of having a catcher who hits home runs, and since they missed out on Molina, they are going to use Jacobs as that guy instead. Mostly, it’s just a sign of an organization that has no plan whatsoever and wants the media to report on things they are doing that sound smart (if you don’t know baseball) to distract from all the dumb things they have done in the past.
I stand by my belief that the Mets FO believes catchers are single use
and must be discarded after each game played.

I bet Chris Carter can be taught to catch too, and do it better than Jacobs.
And, Nick Evans already has catching experience…
