So they gave up a potentially useful bullpen piece
for a crappy outfielder that a month later they decide to try to dump, and a team with 6 OF’s is their only potential trading partner. Oy vey…At least it shows that we’re not the only incompetent team out there.
2009 Did Not Happen
You forget to mention that Socks!! was also a 3 time cy young award winner
That makes this trade look even worse

Bag of balls, anyone?
Do I hear a resin bag? No? How about some bats? Even used bats? Cracked batting helmet? Seriously, anything at all?

I wonder who they intend on taking his spot
now that they’ve sent Pridie down. Carter and Jacobs on the bench??

Imagine Carter, Jacobs, Tatis, Cora, Blanco

Makes not signing Bengie Molina that much better.

it will get better when Beltran gets back
unless they go Ramon Castro on Pagan.

I will continue to lobby for Shinjo

If Pagan goes down...
They’ll just move Bay back to his natural position of CF and put Carter in left

This has to be at least related to F!'s hot spring
They didn’t send him down with Davis, maybe they feel more comfortable with the thought of having him play every day as the starter, with Pagan on the bench instead of GMJr and Pridie the emergency guy in case F! doesn’t hit and needs to be sent back down.

I agree... but in that case, I don't get the Davis send down.
I could totally understand — disagree with, but understand — a Mets lineup with Davis and F! in it, a rotation with Niese, and Mejia in the pen. Instant excitement, just a year early (save for Niese I guess) and a misplaced Mejia.
I've kept my mouth shut
But in this case, I strongly suspect this has something to do with Carter. Maybe I’m wishcasting rationale onto people who don’t have it, but Jerry really seems to like Carter. Either way, between he and Jacobs, it does seem like (or at least seem like the Mets decision makers think there is) there’s more offensive firepower potentially backing up Murphy than there is backing up Pagan. Plus Fernando has at least played a bit in Triple-A and the majors, Davis began last year in HiA. Fernando hasn’t been below Double-A in over three years, as crazy as that is. Plus Davis doesn’t have to be added to the 40-man, F!’s already there.
The problem with this whole line of thinking is F! is a pretty clear defensive downgrade from Pagan. Davis is probably a wash with Murphy at worst defensively, and could be an improvement. In that regard there’s less risk with Davis.

Carter has a short swing
Jerry likes that

F! is already on the 40 man and has started acruing service time.
Davis still needs to be added, and simply waiting until April 18th to promote him delays his free agency by a year (assuming the move is permanent.

I can see him being enough to net player who's out of options.
He’d actually be a reasonably good fit if the Mets tried to get Chad Gaudin or Sergio Mitre. I can see the Nats having some interest now as well.

Apparently just dusty baker
but with the reds surplus of decidedly more talented, and younger and even cheaper, of options I’d be semi shocked to see them trade for him.

I think now that we're talking about only 1 million dollars, cost becomes almost inconsequential.
I really don’t even think the Marlins would struggle to add the extra 500,000 or so that Matthews would cost over a minimum salaried player.

Yeah but if you have 2-3 better outfield options than GMjr who are also are cheaper
what would be the point of taking on the extra 1 million.

It isn't a million though once you subtract the player he'd be replacing.
It’s between 500,000 and 600,000. Thats a small enough amount of money that keeping a prospect’s service time down might be worth considering for a team who won’t be contending this season.

I don't think any of the guys I'm talking about are true prospects
most of them already have about a years worth of service time.

Yeah Balentine and Dickerson
have 3 and 2 years respectively, and stubs I think accrued a years worth last year.

maybe washington is interested now
that Dukes is gone. But for a couple milllion more you can get Dye so…..
Except Dye may actually be less valuable than Matthews,
espescially when the Nats don’t have the option to DH him.

You'll probably see the Cubs and Giants get in...
since there’s only about $2 mil they’ll pick up as well. Go with the Giants on this one. But, watch out for Omar trying to jack things up and ask for Jonathon Sanchez. That’s where (with some common sense) he could offer them Chris Carter and GM, Jr.
