First Reactions Applesauce - Mets beat Braves, Beltran talks to feds, Mejia impresses Strawberry

Star-divide

Meet the Mets

The Mets defeated the Braves in the first semi-real baseball game of the 2010 season. What do we have to take away from the game? Ike Davis got two hits. Ryota Igarashi threw a shutout inning. And Ron Darling is already in midseason form.

Carlos Beltran, like Jose Reyes before him, will talk to the FBI about his relationship with HGH doctor Tony Galea. If Beltran had been on HGH, I'm guessing he wouldn't have been as injured as he was last year.

Darryl Strawberry sees Mariano Rivera potential in Jenrry Mejia.

Around MLB

JA Happ shows his disdain for sabermetrics. Also from the ongoing baseball civil war: a wonderful argument between nerds and the Boston baseball media.

Garrison Keillor snuck into a tour of Minnesota's new stadium and loves it.

Somehow Freddy Garcia is a leading candidate to start in a Major League rotation.

Tim Lincecum in a Snuggie.

Arizona is close to a six year deal with Justin Upton. Rob Neyer gives his thoughts.

And, finally, a great story about Chris Woodward's choice to be with his two year old son rather than participate in the Boston playoff run.

What makes Happ good is what makes all of the Phillies good…the TEAM. He can win games because the offense scores runs. He pitches out of jams because the defense behind him is better than the other team’s defense. Is he lucky, yes; lucky to be a Phillie. Magical times we live in these days.

they were pretty terrible

Let’s look at evaluation metrics as being a progression:
Wins captures say 50% of pitcher value
ERA 60%
DIPS 70%
FIP 80%
xFIP 90%

These guys are picking the exception because he’s their man-crush. Even a tool that 99% effective is going to have a dozen exceptions at the MLB-ready level every year. The exceptions are the best part because that where the next improvement is going to come AND it’s where knowledge of the game comes in. If you can explain a guy’s high strand rate because he’s got a sick pickoff move or is unusually good from the stretch, that’s what scouting is now. Not “he looks like a ballplayer, was a PUNTER in college, and is a natural born leader.”

I liked the article though.

It did a nice job breaking down FIP in a manner that even Phillie fans should be capable of understanding, although most probably only read the first paragraph before they lost patience and went looking for a mall santa to boo.

Strawberry shut up
“I went to Omar and told him, ’You’ve got to make this guy a closer,’” Strawberry was saying in animated fashion Tuesday. "I’d definitely put him in the pen this year, I don’t care if he’s only 20. He’s got a pitch that guys can’t hit.

“He’s the only guy I’ve ever seen that reminds me of Mariano Rivera.”"

So next year around this time

when Meija’s either blown out his arm or his development has been stunted they can say it was all Strawberrys fault and luckily we’re no longer listening to the opinions of former players, not even a former pitcher, who we probably shouldn’t have been listening to in the first place.

Absolutely

Most athletes, whether current or former, seem to have a natural competitive instinct to just “play hard” and ignore big picture things.

funny thing was I looked up Howie Kendrick on BB-Ref, saw it was the wrong guy, remembered his name was Kyle, and then came and typed Howie anyway.

I’m not too sure what to make of Strawberry saying Mejia is a young Mariano Rivera…

Lol, Happ doesn’t like being called “a raging fluke driven by an unsustainable performance with men in scoring position that was about luck, not skill.” Funny comments in the comment section, too.

That Firebrand of the AL article was great, too. I’m going to bookmark that one, and reference it when I need to.

MLB is the worst

I’ve never, ever seen a company that actively tries to hide their product the way MLB does. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we find out one day that Bud Selig is secretly an NFL agent who is doing his best to make sure that future generations of America will never watch baseball.

The NFL and NFLPA are doing their best to help.

I’m getting the feeling that a lockout might be inevitable.

by Stephen Schmidt on Mar 3, 2010 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't blame the NFLPA

I’d say it’s almost entirely on the owners, the players only recieve 55%, which I guess is a big number but we’re talking about a little over half of the revenue when they make up like 90% of the product. The owners want them to accept well less than half, all the way down to like 38%. When the real problem isn’t even how much the players make it’s the unwillingness of the big market team owners to increase revenue sharing.

They really don't need to be taking everything to the media though.

At this point it looks like they are just trying to brace for the inevitable lockout and get a head start on generating good press, rather than trying to actually accomplish anything.

55% is a pretty big number

considering a different party is taking on all the (financial) risk. Thats the way investments work. I don’t know about NFL salary caps, but on its face the number looks right. On the other hand, I would advocate no financial restraints on player contracts so that the market could decide actual value…

by djg2111 on Mar 3, 2010 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

55% is a big number

But most problems the teams are having aren’t because of players salaries directly. It’s because the top like 3 teams, Cowboys/Redskins/Pats bring in SO much more money than everyone else they’re pushing the cap, and with it the salary floor, up faster than the other 29 teams can keep up. They NFL is basically saying these three rich guys are acting like rich douches and won’t agree to increased revenue sharing so instead we want you to give up money.

Also NFL players contracts aren’t guaranteed, so I don’t really think they’re taking on that huge of a financial risk. They can cut players and lose basically nothing at any point, and considering they’re the only sport, unless NHL does but they barely count, that’s agreed to that I’d say they’ve already made one pretty huge concession.

"We have a plan, and our plan, I like our plan'

by Gina on Mar 3, 2010 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

like I said

I don’t know the system. I was just saying you can’t look at revenue numbers in a vacuum. There is a reason that owners get a higher percentage, and they generally deserve it. That does sound pretty bad though. I would vote for that being a clause the players could negotiate… Damn unions…

by djg2111 on Mar 3, 2010 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

Oh I agree

like in the NBA I absolutely think players salaries are out of control and the owners should be getting a higher percentage. I just don’t think the NFL is near the same situation. I think relative to MLB and NBA players NFL players would be getting screwed hxc to get their cut taken down to 38%.

But I wouldn’t necessarily mind some of them find a way to get sidelined for 162 games this year.

Hey, we did better when we had Woodward on the team, so is it really that much of a curse?

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
