Daniel Murphy Out 2-6 Weeks

Mike Jacobs is both a "veteran guy" and "frontrunner" for the Opening Day 1B spot. Check out Adam Rubin's tweets about the situation:

Damn,

and I had just made a fanshot with this news as this came up. Hopefully Chris Carter will start but the “frontrunning veteran” has the lead so that probably won’t happen.

by Brian. on Mar 31, 2010 4:46 PM EDT reply actions

There are no words

Ted Berg had a good piece on this a week or two ago, but basically, Jacobs gets hot for a couple weeks with the Mets a few years ago, then bounces around awful/rebuilding teams like the Marlins and Royals. He’s terrible for both of them, yet gets the reputation of being, as Omar so eloquently put it, “a veteran guy.”

Carter spends a couple of years mashing in the minors but can’t advance because he’s stuck in an organization that’s loaded at the corners/DH.

Instead of just using numbers (not to mention their eyes this spring) to determine that Carter is a superior player in just about every respect, Jacobs’ “veteran” status wins him the job.

Chew on this quote

“Do I see a way that he doesn’t make the team? Not today. … There’s going to be some interesting dialogue about that.” -Jerry Manuel via Lobby Rubin’s Twitter.

The only silver lining about that quote

is that hopefully it implies that Omar still wants him in the minors

That was about Jenrry, right?

You can't always use ST stats to justify moves

Admittedly, while I’ve been following their stats, I haven’t seen Carter or Jacobs hit this spring, but Jacobs has hit about 50 HRs over the last two years. Carter’s never done anything at the major league level. Do you know how many schlubbs have hit up a storm in ST to do nothing up at the ML level? Please.

With a better line-up to surround him, Jacobs could put up better stats this year if given a chance to play.

But, c’mon, let’s face it, this season is looking pretty crappy already. Forget 1B – especially if you’re hopes were riding on Chris Carter or Daniel Murphy (lol) – our starting pitching is a disaster … already. And the season hasn’t even started yet.

Who's using ST stats, people were arguing for Carter to begin with.

No one’s even talking about ST stats. Jacobs has been awful every year he’s been a major leaguer. Carter’s was a solid prospect who was blocked by above average players in two different organizations and never got a chance (not to mention they liked him enough to give up the chance of two first rounders for him). Jacobs has been bounced from two pretty bad organizations with meh options. Jacobs has hit 50 homers and done absolutely nothing else, there’s a reason a guy who’s hit 50 the last two years couldn’t do better than a minor league deal, I mean even adam laroche got what 5 million, and even if this season is a disaster that’s even more of a reason to see go with a player like Carter who might have some upside over a retread who’s already proven over the last 4 years he’s a fringe major leaguer at best. Maybe Carter won’t be better but he at least doesn’t have 4 years of data yet saying it, Jacobs does.

Since the Mets won't do the right thing and start Carter,

Garko>Jacobs?

If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.

Who are these Jacobs anyway? They related?

I thought we already had a couple guys named Evan that could play 1B?

Jenrry is a name you don't forget.

If those other guys followed suit, they’d be on the team too:

No way they take Carter.

My prediction: “Veteran Guy Platoon” = Jacobs/Millar.

Personally, I would like to see a Carter/Evans platoon, but I know that would never happen.

well that sucks

What the hell do they see in Jacobs… he’s done absolutely nothing useful for YEARS.

by KeithsMoustache on Mar 31, 2010 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

My only remaining hope is that Jerry loves "the animal"'s grission

Maybe he’s pulling for him over Jacobs.

Well, it’s not my only remaining hope. My other remaining hope is that they don’t need to delve deeply into numbers to see what Jacobs can’t do, they need only look to his batting average. Everyone understands batting average.

by SuperT on Mar 31, 2010 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

So we're down The Hammer and Beltran to start the season

both potentially for a month, Reyes may or may not be ready by opening day, and Santana has looked less than stellar so far this Spring Training (neither has Ollie, but who’s surprised by that really?), they prefer Jacobs over Carter, and our top pitching prospect may end up as our set-up man… yup I get the feeling its going to be a vintage Mets season this year.

by KeithsMoustache on Mar 31, 2010 5:38 PM EDT reply actions

whoa, whoa, whoa.

If you’re gonna go by nicknames, you gotta break out “Voltron”.

fair enough

although I refer to Beltran and Voltron interchangeably, I refer to Murphy almost exclusively as the Irish Hammer.

Castillo

I hate to harp on this, but the loss of Murphy, and replacement with an inferior defensive player, makes upgrading Castillo defensively even more important.

Seriously: an infield of Wright, Cora, Castillo, and Jacobs will have absolutely no range. They need to mitigate this somewhere…

Under Jerry's thought process

We should have Cora starting when Reyes is healthy, and Tatis starting over Wright. I’m sick of listening to Jerry latch onto crappy players and block out everyone else. Chris Carter hit a pinch hit homerun today. He has 4 Homeruns in 28 at bats, how the hell do you not notice him? I’m sure when he is filling out his card he looks back and sees the name Carter and just assumes he spelt Catalanatto wrong or something. It is Carters time now and Davis’ time in the future. I don’t see Jacobs, F-Cat, or Murphy in any longterm solution for 1B, so why bother now?

by VinnyG917 on Mar 31, 2010 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

Mike Jacobs

Has now become the starting 1B and cleanup hitter. Unbelievable….

The Contest keeps getting closer...

Pretty soon Moore is going to have to start injuring his own starts to keep up with Minaya, or Omar could just blow right by him. I can just see him taking a lead pipe to Billy Butler’s knees right now…

Introducing Buddy Alderson, Sandy's dog, and the newest member of Puppy Avenue!

Embiggen here.
Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.
