Eisenhower Applesauce - Ike hits grand slam, Mets beat Cards, GMJ and Wright homer
Meet the Mets
The Mets outslugged St. Louis 17-11 in yesterday's Grapefruit League Action. What you should know: Ike Davis crushed (that is not an exaggeration either) a grand slam late in the game against some guy named Francisco Samuel. Jason Bay was hitless in his Met debut. David Wright homered in his first AB. GMJ also homered as the wind was blowing strongly out to right. Check out some of the awesome game photos from NY Future Stars. For further recap, here's Ted Berg's experiment with a game recap.
What should we think about the Mets signing Kiko Calero? Well, the Fish Stripes' reaction is a good start.
Can you believe that the Reds aren't interested in GMJ even after he hit a spring home run? Either way, us Met fans were actually feeling something less than dread about Matthews yesterday.
For once, here's some good injury news to report. Reyes is fine and Santana threw to live batters.
Jason Bay reflects on his previous St. Lucie days.
Ike Davis's grand slam can only add to the speculation that he'll be starting in Queens. Daily Stache doesn't go that far, but certainly implies it.
Around MLB
Roy Halladay made an impressive Phillie debut as his squad won in walkoff fashion.
Jason Heyward was hit by an offspeed pitch but, good news, the baseball is OK.
Tim Marchman compiles his list of the best GMs in baseball.
Sky Andrecheck tries to figure out what actually makes people go to baseball games.
Hank Blalock is deciding between the two Florida teams.

Ike Davis
did indeed CRUSH that ball. I suppose he still has a chance of making the team…but I’d give him one more year.

Is Mejia going to pitch today against the Marlins
I have heard that he will. But, they said that he would pitch yesterday against STL, which he did not.

Jose scratched AGAIN today.
Team is saying it’s a “non-baseball” matter.
WTF???
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the street: wheredotheygo?!?!?
We like Ike
You weren’t kidding. He hit the thing out of the stadium. Wow. Buffalo is going to be scary.
On Jose:
metsblog is saying he has an “imbalance in his thyroid” and is headed back to NY (!!!) for tests…
FUCKPISSWANKBUGGERSHITTINGASSHEADANDHOLE!
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the street: wheredotheygo?!?!?
What they didn't mention was that the imbalance was caused by HGH.
I’m only half-kidding.

It appears that it's "natural"
but the irony is it might require HGH for treatment.
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the street: wheredotheygo?!?!?
I kid only to keep from jumping off the cliff
Well, can we expect a spike in HRs from the SS position? Perhaps he can hook up GMJ with a little taste so he can be good again, I mean above replacement level.

That's kind of awesome
I fully support Reyes’s messed up thyroid if it means he’ll be allowed to take HGH. In fact I lobby for all our players to develop thyroid issues.

ACTUALLY
If he’s hyperthyroidic— as reports say— HGH would be far from therapeutic for him.
Then, with these guys, reports say a lot of things.

Wright's HR ...
to right field???
Blah. I want to see Wright start pulling the ball more. He’s supposed to be a 30-35 HR guy, unless he was previously on the juice.

Wright has always been a great oppo field homerun hitter though
which is why Citi Field is so stupid. I have no problem with him taking the ball the other way and trying to punch it over the wall if that’s what he’s being given, just as long as he’s not following Tony B’s idiotic philosophy of trying to hit everything the other way.

Thyroid?
Isn’t that an old person problem? I remember that seen from the movie Johnny Dangerously where the doc says, “your mom has a thyroid problem…the problem is she doesn’t have a thyroid…” or something like that. This is not good. No Beltran or Reyes. Is this Groundhog Day? Is that Ned Ryerson I see?
Thyroid problems aren't really that serious
I don’t expect reyes to miss any real time from this.

Shut down
for 48 hrs. I don’t like that he needs to go to New York for re-evaluation. There aren’t good facilities in Florida that Altcheck could use?
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the street: wheredotheygo?!?!?
the shut down is likely just a precaution in case the problem is something more serious than a simple thyroid issue
I’m always nervous about any medical problems with the Mets, especially Reyes, but I won’t get too worked up until I hear what the actual problem is because most thyroid conditions are treatable.

Holy Crap Ike crushed that
good to see – looks like he’s got some real power. I don’t understand why Mets fans seem to have this all or nothing feeling about him – either he must start opening day, or he must be in AAA until 2011. Did MLB outlaw mid-season call ups and not tell me about it? Treat him like they treated Jose and David back in ‘03 and ’04 – send him down, let him crush AAA pitching for a month or two, and if Murphy’s not hitting really well call him up and hope he can have an impact in the big leagues.

I don't think he should start the season under any circumstances
but despite his clear talents I think he should be in AA, and then AAA because he still has plenty of things to work on, lefties and off-speed pitches to begin with. Also because I’m holding out hope of him one day playing right field.

Applesauce
Daaammmnn. That homer was jacked; no one was exaggerating. He’s still starting in the Minors though- at least, he better be, anyway…
K-Lero. I like the signing more and more as time passes.
I started reading that linked Metsblog article about GMJ, but I stopped because I felt myself getting stupider. Sucks, though, that they apparently don’t want to take him off our hands. It didn’t make sense that they wanted him to begin with, but…
The Phillies won in walk-off fashion. That’s a lot of grit, doing that in ST.
