Must See Johan Applesauce - Santana starts today, Carter powers Mets, Gossage v. Rodriguez
Meet the Mets
Some early must see Met TV this afternoon, as Johan gets his first start of the Spring. Yesterday, the Mets continued to impress, beating up on a split-squad Marlin team, 11-2. What you should know: Chris Carter homered twice, John Maine struck out four in an inning and two-thirds, and Jennry Mejia threw three shutout innings.
Chris Carter made some noise yesterday, so here's some noise about Chris Carter.
Hall of Famer Goose Gossage called Francisco Rodriguez a "clown."
Ted Berg asks when teams started designated eighth inning guys in their bullpen.
In a small move, the Mets have signed Kyle Snyder.
Around MLB
Jason Heyward hit his first home run of the spring in yesterday's 12-4 Brave rout over the Tigers. Larry Stone has seen this type of hype before.
Following their disastrous 2009 playoff season, MLB has fired three umpire supervisors.
Not content with Chone Figgins at third, the Mariners are moving him to second.

looking forward to Johan
Carter has a lot of homers in the minors, maybe he is a good choice for a PH, but can he make good contact, how many Ks in that time
Carter strikes out a pretty reasonable amount for a power hitter I think. Over the course of his four AAA seasons, 291 Ks against 215 BB.
For comparison’s sake, Ryan Howard was a big whiffer even in the minors, struck out 166 times between AA and AAA in 2004 and then another 66 times in 61 games in 2005 before he was called up for good, but really, if you’re getting on base (Howard’s OBP over the course of his 90 AAA games was .432 despite 103 strikeouts) and hitting for power (slugged .660 over the same time span), who cares?
Carter has something like 15% K rate (career and 2009) and around 12% BB rate.
In lobby campaign for Chris Carter.
Go to hell, Goose
I agree with him, to a degree, but the guy needs to shut the fuck up. No one really cares.

A little.
He’s an old man, though, so it’d be a little weird. He still has that facial hair, though, so I guess that makes up for him being old. It makes him “fierce”, or some other goofy phrase that was used in an article about him I read a few weeks ago.

First conscious memory I have of an 8th inning guy
was Ike Davis’ dad in the early 80s, but he was actually the 7th inning & the 8th inning guy for Gossage.
