The Rockies tattooed Mike Pelfrey last September 1st, scoring seven runs against him in just four innings. Big Pelf suffered a bit of temporary insanity after coming out of that game--he proceeded to run laps around the Coors Field parking lot. He atoned for that game today, tossing seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts and no walks. The groundballs weren't there but that's just fine if he increase the punchouts while limiting the free passes. I could get used to this kind of performance from Pelfrey. The Mets improved their record to 3-6 and stopped an ugly four game losing streak.
Pelf also helped himself at the plate, going 1-2 with a walk and an RBI. David Wright walked three times and is on pace for 234 this season. He also saw thirty pitches, the product of some long, grissiony at-bats. Jeff Francoeur managed to stay fly, extending his hitting streak to nine games with a two-hit day. Jose Reyes and Luis Castillo had two hits each but also went a little nutty on the basepaths. Both were caught stealing in the third inning--Castillo was hung up between 1st and 2nd on the back-end of a double steal that Reyes declined to join, and Reyes was thrown out trying to steal third. Relax guys. The hitting with runners in scoring position has been poor but it should come around. No need to force the action like that, especially with the heart of the order up.
Pedro Feliciano and Francisco Rodriguez pitched the 8th and 9th, respectively, with minimal trouble. Also, Melvin Mora is on the Rockies. You learn something new everyday.
This was a much needed win headed into the Cardinals series. The bad news is that the weekend's pitching matchups don't favor the Mets. The good news is we won't have to see this ugly mug until the next Mets-Rockies series in August:

Once 79 inches of nerves and of fear
Finally served notice: Big Pelf is here
His slider bit sharply, his splitter dove low
And best news of all: Big Pelf seemed to know
