Jerry Manuel Can't Make Up His Mind On Mejia
Jerry Manuel made a big stink in spring training about keeping Jenrry Mejia in the MLB bullpen, to the chagrin of anyone with a modicum of common sense. He wanted Mejia to stick with throwing fastballs, in lieu of working on secondary pitches. From the NY Post on March 23:
"I would like to see [Mejia] stay with the hard stuff," Manuel said. "He has enough. If he can command that [cutter], he has enough."

at least he's an integral part of our bullpen

But Jerry's winning
And winning means the manager is making good decisions, right?
But honestly he is using recent history. Cleary the Yankees mismanaged Joba by giving him any starting opportunities. He should have been in mop-up roles outta the pen from day 1. Jerry is making sure the Mets don’t make that mistake.

Where the hell is someone
from the front office to step in and call Jerry an idiot and correct this?
Isn’t this what they are paid for?
Jesus.
Because
The way the organization is structured, there is no true boss. It would be like Avon Barksdale sitting in prison disagreeing with Stringer Bell’s attempt to legitimize the Barksdale organization.

and because the guy directly above him
is as much of a lame duck as he is.
And to top off their greatest season yet the new jersey nets scored 86 points...in double overtime. yes a professional basketball team only mustered 86 points in 58 minutes of basketball.
Barksdale would like Meija to hit the corners
and Stringer would cap Jerry.
Makes sense from a business standpoint.

The Mets turnaround is all the more reason...
Send Mejia down and ready to be a starter for late this season or start of next season. Santana, Pelfrey, Neise will be solid this year, but either (or both) Maine and Perez will not be able to pitch by end of year.
I've seen the Broncos miss the playoffs three times in the final game the last four seasons. I've seen Brodeur give up 2 goals in the last 1:40 of a Game 7. I've seen the Mets break my heart twice in September. 2010 Mets...please bring me some happiness again!!
I think Maine won't be able to recover.
Wish it was Ollie but I believe it’s Maine that we will see “go bye-bye”.
Great mock-dialogue
I look forward to the one-act. Oliver Platt as Jerry. Cate Blanchett as Mejia. They’re such great actors, we can afford having them play out of position.
Darryl is my favorite Met, but adding to the “Mejia as reliever” chorus did NOT help.
Hey, they're making "MacGruber" into a movie. . .
. . . so you never know.
It’s supposed to be ridiculously funny. Like Wayne’s world good.

Wayne's World
good when I was a kid. Shite now. As long as 14 year-olds like “MacGruber”, I guess we’re OK. I do like Will Forte, though, so I may Netflix it when it comes out on DVD three weeks from now.
SNL has been terrible the last few years
but they have a number of guys on there who are really good, but just have bad material. Will Forte is one of them, Andy Samberg is not.
Samberg
It’s incredible that they have a guy with so little range that he only can do spoof songs and uncomfortably unfunny sketches with cats. UH-OH — look, it’s a cameo by a pop star in one of Andy Samberg’s idiotic parody songs — WHOA!!!!
The only video short I ever liked was laser cats
everything else, I barely cracked a smile. I don’t even watch anymore really, just a q or 2 episodes if I like the host, and then I turn it off after weekend update.
Lazy Sunday, D In A Box, J In My Pants and I'm On A Boat are all outstanding

Totally generational.
I had a conversation last week where someone said to me that SNL hadn’t been good since they were a kid, back in the Will Ferrell years. I then realized that I had been saying the same thing but with the Lovitz/Carvey/Hartmen years substituted. There are certainly people out there saying that it’s been no good since Bill Murray left.

That's because it hasn't been.

That may have been the best cast.
Everyone on the late 80s, early 90s cast was great. Didn’t they have Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey, Chris Farly, David Spade, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, Mike Myers and Kevin Nealon on the same show?
Yeah I think all of those people overlapped.

Murray
at first they barely used him. He came on in 1976 I think, after Chevy Chase left after the first year. Then he started doing the lounge singer bit and the Todd and Lisa Lupner thing.
Murray also did a bit as a reporter at Spring training with the Mets when sportscaster Chico Escuela (Garrett Morris) was making a comeback. After he had already written a tell-all book, Bad Stuff ‘Bout the Mets. Murray reads some of it to Ed Kranepool. “Tom Seaver-always take up 2 parking spots.” Kranepool keeps shaking his head, “Not True.” "’Ed Kranepool, borrow Chico’s soap, never return it.’ Pretty rough stuff." You’d have to imagine it with Murray doing his serious, sonorous, sportscaster tone of voice.
The year after Murray, Akroyd and the rest of the original cast left was terrible. Brad Hall, Charles Rocket, Gilbert Gottfried (ugh), Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (very young at the time and so-so at sketch, at least back then). Awful. Easily the worst year, although when Robert Downey, Jr. and Anthony Michael-Hall were on the show it was pretty tired as well. Rocket said fuck live on the last episode that year (1980?). I think he committed suicide a year or so ago. he never lived it down. Larry David was writing but that didn’t save it. I guess he hadn’t hit his stride.
Hartman was great, and that era was pretty good.
The show has been very uneven for years. Usually there are one or 2 decent sketches, or at least a laugh in one. Lotsa dross to wade through.
I liked Lazy Sunday, and Parnell also did a rap about Kirsten Dunst during weekend update that was pretty good. The Patterson skit was pretty funny I thought until they ran it uinto the ground.
Like when Krusty the Klown hosts Tuesday Night Live and does the Big Ear People skit.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. You didn't mention Bill Hader. Unacceptable.
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
Yeah Bill Hader is awesome, Kristen Wiig is very talented
and a couple of others, just the show itself is very weak.
Those sorts of "dude, you've got to see" films are really hit or miss
Hangover and Old School = absurdly overrated. Dumb & Dumber = not overrated also = Jerry & Omar = overrated.
I heard too many people
. . . saying exactly that. Thus, expectations were too high, and I was underwhelmed.
Anchorman
=awesome. Blades of Glory/Semi-Pro = suck
Anchorman is classic
Semi Pro was okay, and Blades of Glory, couldn’t make it through the whole thing.
Anchorman, Old School were made of awesome
Blades of Glory is on the next level of Ferrell movies.
Count me as another guy who thought the Hangover was overrated, though decent in its own right.
I guess I'd also go with "overrated" for Hangover.
It was funny, for damn sure. But I saw it only after it came out on DVD and everyone had been telling me for months how it was the funniest thing I’d ever see and, eh, nope.

Does the Met FO
rely on the opinion of fans from Metsblog.com? I mean more people approve of Jerry Manuel than Disapprove or even the Unsure option…Are people that blind? What has Jerry done this year that I approve of? Not a damn thing.

Is that. . .
Metsblog?? Hmmm. . . . that’s an interesting issue. Why do fans support Jerry?
I’m not sure. . . . I guess people here will just vote for the manager if the Mets are winning . . . and against if they’re losing. . . . from what I can gather, the Mets may fire Manuel if they’re losing by late June. . . . The thing is, they may not be. . . . And I think that might be a good thing. . . . but I don’t know. . . . .
You spelled everything right in a Cerrone impression
thus, I don’t believe it.

I imagine it's entirely
because of the “turn around” we had in 08 when Willie was fired.
And to top off their greatest season yet the new jersey nets scored 86 points...in double overtime. yes a professional basketball team only mustered 86 points in 58 minutes of basketball.
to mcsoxerhoff
because the front office + Ownership is just as moronic/inept as Jerry the “Manager?”
they hire people worse than them so it makes them look ok.
I love the mock dialogue, I’d love to see one of Minaya, Wilpons, Dan Warthen, Sandy Koufax and Johan discussing with or about Ollie Perez…hehe.
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
so we're just about through 1/8 of the season
and Mejia has pitched nine innings. meaning that he’s on pace for about 56 innings for the year if he stays in the bullpen. so i’m guessing he’ll be able to throw 200 innings in around 2013. terrific.
you still on the
Mejia to bullpen defense team I see. “Winter Ball” is a crappy excuse and the competition isn’t quite the same. If I were The Wilpons I’d demand Mejia be in Double A asap as a starter.
I also don't think winter ball is nearly long enough
to expect a pitcher to get stretched out enough to pitch anywhere near a full season of baseball.
Not to mention the fact that if Jerry admits himself his repertoire isn’t strong enough I doubt it’s going to get strong enough in winter ball.
And to top off their greatest season yet the new jersey nets scored 86 points...in double overtime. yes a professional basketball team only mustered 86 points in 58 minutes of basketball.
Plus there's that whole, "resting your arm for a bunch of months
so it can most fully heal from the unnatural act of pitching a baseball overhand" thing. Manuel should be fired immediately. There’s nothing debateable about it unless you’re the kind of person who believes in limited nuclear warfare.
Put your future ace on pace for 56 innings the year after he pitched, what, 70?
To me this is one thing the Nats got right with Riggleman
We had weird issues this spring in deciding what to with Desmond. Our manager started getting some bonehead ideas about moving Desmond all around the diamond and keeping Guzman at shortstop. Rizzo says Desmond will play shortstop somewhere but you choose where. Riggleman ends up coming to the tougher conclusion that Desmond is better than Guzman defensively and is willing to bruise egos to keep Desmond. General Managers run teams in this day and age and managers handle clubhouse chemistry and in-game strategy.
Omar has to take the blame for this in my opinion because he’s got to give developmentally sound parameters for Manuel to use Mejia in.

Perhaps there is a method to the madness
There’s been a lot of this discussion recently and most fans here at AA agree Mejia should be in the minors. But perhaps Minaya is truly trying to give the league the impression that Mejia will never be more than a middle reliever, thereby causing other GM’s not to place a high value on Mejia and demand him in return for any trade at the deadline. Say Minaya wants to make a big trade and get a legit starter in here. Now he can negotiate with Dillon Gee as the top starter in the orginazation and not Mejia. Then after the deadline they send Mejia down to get stretched out. Perhaps.
by Blame-everyone-else on Apr 26, 2010 12:14 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
wow
That is the most convoluted idea I’ve ever heard and clearly invokes the Isiah Thomas is a Genius Fallacy.
Eh
If GMs are paying any attention to Mejia, they know that they would be getting more than a middle reliever. If anything, I’d imagine plenty of GMs are laughing about how Omar is willing to stunt the development of a potentially top-shelf arm for the sake of stowing him deep in the bullpen of a lame duck manager.

I'm just waiting for the inevitable offer
Someone offers us a proven, top-shelf RP with at least 3 years of team control left (and cash?) for Mejia.
I can’t see how the Mets turn that down, especially if the team is in win now mode and competitive in July/August.
Fail
I didn’t actually think it could work. Just what might be going on in Omars mind.

if the guy has had 3 arm surgeries and is 35
then i’m sure Omar would be looking to acquire him. If he limps then all the more better
What's going on in Omar's mind. . .
. . . is “I wonder what’s going on in Jeff Wilpon’s mind” and/or “when is the right time to approach Cora’s agent about an extension. . . .?”

Either use him frequently or don’t use him and send him down. It’s not rocket science. In fact, just typing this out is getting me agitated.
The most impressive thing about this post is
the fact that you never misspelled Jenrry. Not once. Even when typing Jerry and Jenrry in an alternating fashion.
