Jerry Manuel made a big stink in spring training about keeping Jenrry Mejia in the MLB bullpen, to the chagrin of anyone with a modicum of common sense. He wanted Mejia to stick with throwing fastballs, in lieu of working on secondary pitches. From the NY Post on March 23:
"I would like to see [Mejia] stay with the hard stuff," Manuel said. "He has enough. If he can command that [cutter], he has enough."
Mejia made the team and has thrown nine innings this season. Perhaps due to Jerry's encouragement, he has thrown a fastball 81.6% of the time. Just following orders, right? Leave the curveball and changeup behind kid, give 'em the heater. Now take a look at Jerry's latest pearl of wisdom, via

While there has been a tempest among fans wishing that Mejia would be in the minors readying for a starting job, Manuel feels he's not suited for starting now.
"I don't think he has had enough of his repertoire to show," he said. "He's been mostly a one-pitch or two-pitch guy, but as a starter, the repertoire of the curveball, the change-up, the sinker, all those type of things are needed."
Jerry: Hey kid, you'll never make it as a starter unless you can throw multiple pitches effectively.
Jenrry: Okay, so can I go to the minors to work on those pitches?
Jerry: Nah, we need you in the bullpen. It's Mejia Time.
Jenrry: Alright, I suppose I can work in my changeup and curveball when relieving.
Jerry: Not so fast son -- stick with the hard stuff. If you can command the hard stuff, you have enough.
Jenrry: You're not making any sense.
Jerry: It's catch-22.
Jenrry: :::sigh::: It's the worst catch there is.
