2010 Mets Milestone Watch

So yeah, it's an off day and after winning 9 of our last 10 I couldn't get enough of Mets baseball. So I spent a considerable amount of my free work hours on baseball-reference.com. David Wright's most recent addition to the 1,000 hit club (Chase Utley joined shortley after) had me thinking of Met milestones and seeing where our frustrating lovable Mets are on their list. I appologize in advance for not having this in table format.

Star-divide

The one "milestone" list that has the most Mets on it is the home run count, with Wright, Jason Bay and Jeff Francoeur all within striking distance of their own respective milestone.

HOME RUN MILESTONES

Player        Total          Going Towards          Season Average

Bay             186                       200                              32
Frenchy      91                        100                              20
Wright        143                      150                              27

Obviously I think all three can hit their respective totals. I don't know how big Wright's 150 will be played up but I figured I'd lump it in anyway considering all 150 will be as a Met where as the other two have more HRs as a member of other teams.

Next on the list is the one that Wright just joined, the 1000 hit club. Two players are all but sure bets to join it based on their season average.

1000 HIT MILESTONES

Player        Total          Going Towards          Season Average

Bay             948                      1000                              163
Reyes        978                      1000                              196

It will be awesome to see Reyes with his 1000 hit considering he is the reason I am a Mets fan. I didn't really follow baseball until I read a SI article on Jose and I started following Reyes and I was instantly hooked. Watched just about every one since. Most awesome outcome would be to have Reyes hit a three-bagger for his 1000 and Bay with a HR.

Speaking of three-baggers. Reyes is closing in on a milestone of his own in that category.

3B HIT MILESTONE

Player        Total          Going Towards          Season Average

Reyes        75                      100                              15

He should hit this in cavernous Citi Field as long as he stays active for 150+ games.

And the last, most far-fetched, milestone out there: The 2,000 hit club.

2000 HIT MILESTONE

Player        Total          Going Towards          Season Average

Castillo        1848                 2000                              181

This is a statement to Castillo's longevity in the league. He has been playing for quite some time and for quite a few teams but 2000 is nothing to sneeze at. This is the one I'm most rooting for. He is a fun guy to watch hit.

1000 hits for Reyes and Wright

I was watching this with Wright last year, and if not for the head injury he would have had it most likely. I know he missed only 15 days, and not sure but probably less than 15 games. It took until game 21 for him to breakit but last season he was hitting for a high average until the bean ball, and then after never really got rolling again. I believe that bean ball cost him not only those games he was on the DL but probably cost him a bunch of hits when he got back.

The reason that Bay isnt as big a deal, he got hits with other team. i will be more impressed if Bay gets 1000 hits in a Mets uniform like david and Jose

Reyes

Would have gotten his last year too base on his season averages had he played more than 36 games.

I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.

To be honest

these numbers are pretty meaningless to me. What I follow closely are the Mets all-time leaderboards, and watching Wright & Reyes climb up them. With 103 more Games Played, Wright will bump Mike Piazza out of the top 10, and 7 more will move him ahead of Lee Mazilli into 9th place (hard to believe Wright’s almost played as many games as Piazza).

Right now both Reyes & Wright are tied with Cleon Jones for 5th on the Mets runs scored list, and both have a chance to get all the way up to second this season.

With 27 more hits, Wright will pass Piazza, Strawberry, and Harrelson on the Mets hit list. Reyes is 25 hits behind Wright. Both of them have at least an outside chance to move into the top 3 this season (knocking off Edgardo Alfonzo).

Wright already took the franchise doubles record, but Reyes (and Beltran, if he ever comes back) can move up (they’re currently #9 & 10)

One that is interesting to watch long-term: Wright is 5th in homers, 11 behind Dave Kingman. He’s 51 behnd HoJo, 77 behind Piazza, and 109 behind Strawberry. He should finish this season in 4th, and then hopefully pass one guy a season for the next 3 years.

Wright is also 5th in RBI, and a 100 RBI season will move him into second place all-time, past Piazza, HoJo, and Kranepool.

Finally, not that anyone really pays attention to this milestone, but I find it interesting: Wright has already passed Mike Piazza on the Mets all time BB leaders, and sits in 9th all-time. I always considered Piazza to have a good eye at the plate, and it seemed like he walked a good amount, but Wright has passed him in over 200 fewer PA’s.

Word

People forget that we are privileged to be living in the era of the two franchise position players of the New York Mets. It would be so cool if they both stay here throughout their primes.

Maybe, in time, some other fans out there will appreciate them more than they do now.

Unfortunately

the Mets all-time stats aren’t that impressive. As a diehard fan I hate to say it.

It will be nice if the 2 wind up 1-2 in most of the stats, and actually blow away the old standards. I hope to see them rival some of the Yankees stats. i would like to see Wright get up there around Jeter numbers as far as hits

hope we see Davis do the same

I know he is a baby as far as time and stats, but it woul dbe nice to see someone else coming up the leader board in a few years.

Wait

You think that Reyes is going to hit 25 triples THIS year alone?

As big as Citi is...he's got a shot

His career high is 19, in 2008.

It will certainly take some luck, but he’s already got 2 in 75 AB. I don’t think he’ll top 20, but it will be fun watching him try.

May you be locked in a battle of wits against Omar Minaya.

I'd like to see the 2000th slap

If reyes gets to 100 triples by the end of this year, its going to be a very exciting year.
