Mets Stat Analyst to Talk About Math & Sports

Ben Baumer, statistical analyst for the New York Mets, will deliver the keynote address at a special program on “Mathematics and Sports” at New Jersey City University on Thursday, April 22, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., in Room 202 of Hepburn Hall, 2039 Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City .  Admission is free and open to the community.

Mr. Baumer, who is currently in his seventh season as statistical analyst for the New York Mets, will deliver a keynote address on “Applications of the Hits Per Balls in Play Rate in Baseball.”  Mr. Baumer’s lecture will focus on one of the more recent and controversial discoveries in the history of the statistical analysis of baseball: pitchers seem to have very little control over the rate at which balls that are put into play against them fall for hits.  Mr. Baumer will explore this theory, known informally as Defense Independent Pitching Statistics, and offer some applications of use to general managers.
In his role as statistical analyst for the New York Mets, Mr. Baumer advises General Manager Omar Minaya directly on player evaluations, strategies, free agent signings, and trades.  Mr. Baumer is in his fifth year as a Ph.D. student in mathematics at City University of New York Graduate Center.

The program will also feature lectures on “The Sports Statistics Page: The Treasure Chest” byDr. Bruce Chadwick, an NJCU professor of English; “Modeling Runs in Seasons Where Data Is Unavailable” by Dr. John T. Saccoman, a professor of mathematics and computer science at Seton Hall University; “Evaluating Player Performance in the National Basketball Association” by Dr. Matthew S. Johnson, an associate professor of statistics and education at Teachers College of Columbia University; “Mathematics of the NFL’s Quarterback Passer Rating” by Dr. Paul von Dohlen, an assistant professor of mathematics at William Paterson University; “Mathematical Modeling of Baseball: Who Will Win the 2010 Pennant?” by Dr. Bruce Bukiet, associate dean of the College of Science and Liberal Arts and associate professor of mathematical sciences at New Jersey Institute of Technology; “Optimal Velocity in a Race” by Dr. Zhixiong Chen, an NJCU assistant professor of mathematics; “Designing Ice Skates” by Joy H. Atkin, a retired teacher from Elizabeth High School who also taught at County College of Morris and Fairleigh Dickinson University; and “Complications and Applications of Statistics in NCAA Athletics” by Ira Thor, NJCU sports information director.

Held in April in recognition of “Mathematics Awareness Month,” the program is also part of NJCU’s 80th Anniversary “Birthday Bash and Reunion Week,” a special campus series of events that includes lectures, discussions, open houses, athletic competitions, concerts, exhibits, a silent auction, and a dinner.

           Dr. Joanne Z. Bruno, NJCU interim vice president for academic affairs, will deliver opening remarks.  Moderators will be Ashante Timoll, NJCU head women’s basketball coach; Marc Brown, NJCU head men’s basketball coach; and Dr. Barbara Feldman, dean of NJCU’s William J. Maxwell College of Arts and Sciences who will also deliver closing remarks.
