Ok...What's the plan for Fernando
I've just been wondering what's the plan for Fernando Martinez. Hearing rumors that he's not a Center Field prospect anymore and more of a corners guy. Is that true? What about Frenchy/Bay/Carter and even Beltran may turn into a corner guy post surgery. It seems we have a surplus of options but no real direction is which we are going. His plate discipline is still lacking, only 1 walk so far this season compared to 16 Ks. I just wanted to start a conversation to see where we all thought the Mets should go

Fernando has to stay healthy and hit
If he doesn’t do those two things, then he is not going to be a part of any plans. If he does those two things, then I think things will work themselves out.
FMart
Needs to be traded as soon as he hits a little bit. This guy will NEVER be healthy.
just traded?
for anything? I mean you can’t just say he should be traded, what realistic deal would it make sense to move him in if he’s hitting. I mean if we don’t value him because of his health problems do you think anyone else is going too?
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
well......if he isn't healthy, he's worth nothing.
if he is playing and hitting, but prone to injury, he’s worth a little.
unless, of course, he is traded to the Yankees, in which case he will immediately become HOF material.
you know what I'm sayin' ?
That's kind of my point
we’d just end up selling low, and probably be better off keeping him to see if he can keep it up.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
This
Fernando has tremendous potential, you can’t sell low on him.
Jesus wants to be like Ryan Miller when he grows up.
Agreed. Martinez has far and away the most value to the Mets at this point.
We wouldn’t get much for him today so why not hang on to him and see if he can produce? If he can’t, little is lost.
I would plan to put Beltran in a corner next year, and keep Pagan (in his 3rd arb year, I think) to play CF. I’d decline to offer Francouer arbitration, and look to Carter as my backup corner OFer. That leaves me looking for a backup CFer who can hit lefties a little bit.
There is simply no way I’d plan on Martinez contributing at all to the major league club in 2011. It also seems clear that we have to let Beltran leave after his contract’s up, though if he comes back in June and is his old self through next year I’d be happy to reconsider.
Well...just a reminder on what happened the last time we did that
Carlos Delgado came back for a season and Tex ended up in the Bronx.
I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.
lets be honest
we probably weren’t going to pay for Tex anyway. =/
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
unfortunately
you are probably right.
I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.
Hence the "hits a little bit"
Meaning as soon as he hits well enough to be worth something, the mets need to sell “HIGH”.
With me now?
Meaning that...
I think he will always be hurt and never amount to anything, so as soon as he is healthy for any reasonable amount of time they need to see if he can be traded for something of value. Not just a dump of him, as that makes absolutely no sense.
but my point is
what makes you think hitting a little bit will make him worth something? it’s not like other teams gms, or at least most of them, are a bunch of morons they know about F!‘s injury history, if they’re willing to trade anything of value for him it’s likely because there’s significant reason to believe he’s turned the corner.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
Because
GM’s make dumb moves all the time. Otherwise every trade would be equal. Minaya LOVES to trade/sign players that are injury prone. The phillies traded for Freddy Garcia and didn’t give him a physical.
Like someone said, he’s only 21, so a team might think that he will grow out of the injury proneness (close enough for it to be a word).
I don’t believe that he will. Doesn’t mean that someone else doesn’t.
most of the dumb moves made by gms
are made by a small percentage of gms. Most gms don’t do things that dumb. And just because you believe someone will doesn’t mean they’ll give up anything of value for it.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
Or if you do get another GM to bite
you’ll just be getting another question mark in return.
Jesus wants to be like Ryan Miller when he grows up.
Frenchy doesn't really seem to be much of an option at this point
Carter is probably better suited as a 4th outfielder, and Beltran may end up in the corner but we don’t even know if he’ll re-up with us even if he is healthy.
Hell at this point we’re not even sure how much of an option Fartinez is between health and plate discipline. We have a surplus of middling options at this point not really a surplus of above average guys. Why he’s not getting reps in center, or at least right field since lf obviously won’t be opening up anytime soon, is anyone’s guess.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
I'd like to see
Bay-Pagan-Beltran as our OF in the future if possible.
I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.
when you say "the future"....you mean like next year and that's it, right ?.
because I’m pretty sure Beltran is outta here after that.
you know what I'm sayin' ?
I'm gunna miss that guy
He drinks sliders like they are milshakes you know?
I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.
the plan is you sit tight with him
have him play a whole yr injury free of AAA BB, and have him leave AAA with nothing left to prove. Remeber He was signed when he was 17 so people think he’s old. He’s still only 21 yrs old.
Fernando was never a centerfield prospect really
Even when he made his name in Hagerstown in 2006, everything I remember reading said he’d eventually have to move to a corner. He still has a ton of upside, he just needs to stay healthy and improve his strike zone judgment. He still has time, a lot of 21 year olds are still in A+, in fact, the average age of batters in the FSL is 22.8.
BA thought he'd have to move to first base in 07
so the fact he might be an average-above average right fielder is an improvement.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
He still has decent speed
And appeared to have an above average arm, so maybe he could become a solid right fielder. But first he’s got to stay healthy and learn the strike zone. This is really the first time I’ve been concerned with him as a prospect, the fact that he’s injured again, and has 16 Ks to 1 BB, he can’t improve that if he’s sidelined for weeks at a time.
One walk in 82 ABs!
Not even Frenchy could manage that. That’s just sick, and not in the good way.
i think you underestimate frenchy
part of the problem is it seems likely as soon as he’s healthy and starts hitting they’ll probably call him up again. He’s never going to learn the strike zone if he keeps getting jerked around.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
I don’t think he sees the bigs until his AAA season is over for a September/October internship. They seem pretty strict in rushing up prospects now(thank goodness). I was thinking that they should trade him for pitching. This was when Francouer was hitting and walking. The only pitching Fernando is likely to return is middle relief.
When and if Beltran comes back, I would assume he will be in RF right? If not, I still prefer Pagan in RF over Francouer or platoon. I see no room for him on the roster next year either, so he will have to stay down there yet another year. Hopefully learning the strikes zone. This might discourage him, and he could lose focus, however, I feel that if they give him clear goals this year and next year, his time in AAA make him a stronger player. The benefit to having him down there for the next two years in that by 2012 he will be older and closer to his peak years.

You greatly underestimate Francoeur
Looking back to last season, in two months (May and July), he walked exactly twice, once in each month. He played virtually everyday in both months, meaning he got lots of plate appearances.

The Plan™ is to sell low, trade him for an 8th inning RP or a 4th tier backup catcher or an OF who made a catch 5 years ago.
Preference for dealing with smart GMs who will extract exploit the most of this deal.
In lobby campaign for Chris Carter.
Fernando really needs to spend this year and next in AAA working on his approach.
I have a feeling Beltran will be spending the next year and a half as our right fielder, with Pagan in center. Shoot for opening day 2012 and fill in work for Beltran.
Reyes, Thole, Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis, Martinez, Tejada...
