Oh Happier Day Applesauce - Mets win again, force Phillie team meeting, Strawberry's new restaurant
Meet the Mets
The Mets continued stealing the Phillie signs at home and managed their second consecutive victory last night. Once again, I am a happy man this morning as Charlie Manuel and Shane Victorino have resorted to a team meeting to fire the club up.
Jessep at Metsmerized believes that it is obvious that Mejia MUST become a closer.
Patrick Flood talks physics, knuckleballs, and machismo.
Sabometrics.com says that Jon Niese needs to work a little bit more on his "promising" curveball.
Matt Cerrone keeps talking with these late 90s Mets. This time it's Edgardo Alfonzo.
Darryl is looking for a GM to help him open a restaurant in Douglaston.
Eddie Kunz is starting to get a hang of this whole starting rotation thing.
All-star voting is upon us, time to get worked up over the terrible decisions by fans.
Around MLB
Brian McNamee has a mullet and ad space on his tie. Awesome.
The extremely limited edition Stephen Strasburg baseball card has reached $16,000 on EBay.
Ubaldo Jimenez's ERA is now at 0.88.
Jason Heyward is being legitimately compared to some pretty incredible players at FanGraphs.
Gregg Zaun has a torn labrum and may retire from baseball.
Ozzie Guillen was on fire last night. First, he signed an autograph for a Cleveland fan saying "Bye, Bye Lebron!". Then, he went out and got ejected and talked smack about umpire Joe West.

I knew the "groom Mejia to be a closer" stuff would start some time

Its been going on for a while on other blogs that will remain nameless.
And they use such horrible reasoning. Such as his time at Bingo last season.

Man that blogpost really degenearted

They are a bunch of girls over there.
The moment someone uses logic and actual facts to debunk an argement, that stuff happens. It turns into a mud slinging event.

Darryl was involved
As a guy who actually wants “18” retired (which will never happen, because then 8 and 17 would have to go up, and Wilpon still needs space for Dodgers and managers who played for the Dodgers) I was not pleased.
I was 50/50 on whethter it would start with Fatcessa or Metsmerized
Either way, I assumed it would be a poorly thought out proposal.

Do you live in DC?
Otherwise you know nothing of the hype. Heck, even I’m succumbing to it because I’m going to be making a mad dash to buy tickets as soon as they announce when he will be making the first start.
I did live in DC
until a couple weeks ago. I didn’t think it was ridiculous, but it’s been a bit sterile as a sports town of late, with only the Caps doing anything (prior to their usual meltdown,) and I’m guessing the “anticipation” has grown exponentially since people think the team doesn’t suck as horrribly as they have. Maybe John Wall can keep them occupied.
They're all giddy over here
Strasberg, Wall, Ovechkin and McNabb. It’s their Mount Rushmore of sports figures, and three of the four haven’t even put on their uniform in competition yet (and one’s not even yet in the organization). It’s gonna make the eventual flameout – especially with the Skins – even more delightful.
lol the skins are really that excited?
do they realize at this point McNabb is kind of like an older injury prone version of Campbell?
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
well I don't think either suck
but I mean more that Campbells problem seemed to be he had no balls and refused to throw more than 10 yards down the field unless his guy was wide open, and the last few years McNabb has been turning into a similar player. Except less mobile and more injury prone. I think Campbell was actually an above average qb, he just seemed like a sissy or something idk.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
McNabb is/was excellent, actually
although he was in a system that simultaneously inflated his numbers and stifled his creativity.
I agree he was excellent
I just don’t think he is anymore. I still think he’s above average but I really don’t think he’s all that much of an upgrade over Campbell, especially when you consider his injury issues.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
Nabb
is still pretty awesome. He gets injured a little, but 12 games of his awesome-ness is worth it i think. Skins overpaid though
by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions
They really are that excited
I’d grant that McNabb is an upgrade over Campbell, but they seem to think they’ve gone from Ryan Leaf to Peyton Manning. Campbell was an adequate quarterback, and it’s not like they’ve acquired a guy who is a top five qb (probably top 10). That, combined with the hires of Allen and Shanahan has people giddy, though they’re not all necessarily thinking Super Bowl. Of course no one wants to address the fact that Shanahan hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire since Elway retired, but Shanalahan (as they call the combo) is definitely superior to Cerrato and Zorn – then again so would just about any two bums off the street.
Shanahan's still an AWESOME offensive coach
the problem in Denver was he completely refused to cede power over the defense despite years and years of his defensive personnel failing. With even a passable defense they would have been a superbowl team.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
My take was
that they’ve had so many makeovers and so many savior coaches and so many aging stars brought in at high prices that the fans are taking a “show me first” approach.
They seem to be naively optimistic
I think fans were so battered by the Cerrato years that they view anything as an automatic upgrade, and many have taken the opposite approach to the one you suggested. In other words, they are all on the trust them until something bad happens kick. That’s why the eventual flameout will be high-sterical.
Well
i’m a DC winter sports fan dating back to when I was a kid. So, I can tolerate Wall and Ovechkin. And it’s not like I escaped just in time. McNabb and I just switched places. I’m now in Philly. It’s like escaping a lions’ den only to sprint between a mother Grizzly and her cub. Hooboy. You don’t want to mess with Bryant Reeves and her babies.
Biiiiiigggg
country. I have not heard that name thrown around in a long time. That was an awesome fional four in 85 when Corliss shit all over a Rasheed Wallace that was about 6 inches taller than him. Unfortunately, the Hawgs couldn’t get anything going against the damn Bruins in the championship.

I think others should join me
in not giving a shit about All Star Voting. It sucks that all star appearances count when the hall of fame voting rolls around, but so does a whole bunch of other meaningless shit: were you nice to the media? number of RINGZ you won while playing for a team with a $200 million payroll. Were you ever suspected of using PEDs? Did you “bat .300”? Gold gloves. WINZ. is your name bill mazeroski?
Every year we get worked up about who gets in and who doesn’t. what the fuck ever. By July I’ll be praying for David and Jose to get a few days off.

I don't care from the sense that the players I want don't get it
its that the NL fans seem blindly carpet bomb the votes with whichever team has the largest market that can be mobilized much more than the AL fans who for the most part make decent selections, meaning we’ll never see home field advantage in the WS again.
by KeithsMoustache on May 27, 2010 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Maybe it's just because I have no experience with AL fans
outside of Yankees and Red Sox fans, but I’ve always felt like there’s more blind obnoxious NL homers than in the AL. Maybe it’s because AL teams fans have been beaten down by years of Yankee/Red Sox dominance where as the NL has been a clusterfuck.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
not sure myself
most of my AL following friends are Sox or Yankees. Don’t really know any other demographics so its hard to gauge the more general populous, but it does seem from all star voting theres a much better distribution of votes to players who deserve it, at least this year.
by KeithsMoustache on May 27, 2010 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah a few years ago cubs fans did the same thing didn't they?
stuffing ballot boxes.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
yup
and a few other teams (Mets included) have done it over the years. You don’t see it in the AL much anymore though.
by KeithsMoustache on May 27, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Even with the Yankees
they may be slightly over-represented, but they tend to only vote players who are legitimately all star caliber players to the ASG. They may not always be THE best choice out there, but they’re usually at least top 2-3. I don’t remember seeing too many guys in the AL as offensively bad as Rollins at SS, or Ramirez at 3rd when the cubbies overloaded the ballots. Maybe its just selective memory, but it seems like they’re much smarter about who they vote for in general.

You can bet that Phillies team meeting
really focused on Dickey. I’m sure he came up many times. He’ll definitely be pumped for his next start.
OK, fine, I’ll finally stop.
I think the problem they had with Dickey
is that everyone tried too pull him too hard. They would have been better off going up the middle or even the other way.
I'm starting to get worried...
If the Mets win a few more games, Omar and the Wilpons are going to start to believe they’re actually a contending team and make a stupid trade.
The Mets haven't made a significant trade inseason in three years
I don’t expect that to change, especially with the Wilpon’s frugality this year.
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
my new favorite number

Oh, and I hate to say I predicted this before it was even possible, but:
Uno:
I love Mejia, I’ve talked about him forever. I’m really worried the Mets are going to put him in the bullpen to start the season. I hope that doesn’t happen. I hope they put him back in Binghamton next year. His peripherals in Binghamton were really solid last year. I hope he continues to prosper there and move up the ranks. I don’t want to see him get thrown in. He has that look of a set-up guy or closer that people can think “Oh, this is one of those late-inning guys, a K-Rod because of that electric arm.” And they can forget that he can actually be a very good starter if they leave him in the minors for long enough.
Dos:
To think of how silly it would be to try and gain a marginal advantage by using Mejia in the bullpen this season and risk his potential blossoming as a starter. But here it is. The Mets have something really exciting on their hands. Let’s hope they do the right thing and think long-term.
How you could predict something so foolish, I don't know.
But thanks, jerk.

Many complain about the vocals
but they miss the overriding awesomeness of mega-chops and hobbit lyrics
It’s an acquired taste. Old-school funk/ crate-digger types tend to hate them. You?
I support this comment.
Over-processed guitars and somewhat painful vocals does not make for a good combination. I don’t like jam bands much either, for what it’s worth.

There really aren't many
the jam band doesn’t get much attention these days because the music industry can’t package it into some neat easy to market concept, so they don’t bother with creativity or individuality anymore. Laziness is killing good music.

Mejia
Needs time to develop his secondary stuff as most of the regulars here suggest on a nearly daily basis. For any one to argue otherwise is just utterly ridiculous IMHO. If the people in the Mets FO just had some brains this experiment would have ended long ago.
