By the way

I’m returning to the game thread after a vacation break, and recently, an allergy-related illness. I think the game links idea has died down, as well.

LOL

But actually, I visited some family down in N.C., and I noticed that everybody got sick, including my brother and sister. It was epidemic – many people at the local Wal-mart were sick, too

Gallardo?

Lots of walks, yes, but a 3.63 xFIP and .307 baBIP suggests he is still a force to be reckoned with!

Lets Go Mets Go

by sj10689 on May 27, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

isn't that

league average babip? or right around league average

by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

Which is why the 3.63 xFIP is more legitimate than if mentioned alone.

Lets Go Mets Go

by sj10689 on May 27, 2010 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

xFIP

has nothing to do with balls in play though…..

at least as far as i know

by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

All things considered

A pitcher with a low baBIP and/or good pitch economy is also more likely to have a lower xFIP as well (and vice-versa), so these two can be used in conjunction to determine certain facets of performance.

Lets Go Mets Go

by sj10689 on May 27, 2010 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

but considering that

babip can only effect ERa/WHIP etc. and no field independent stats then it doesn’t strengthen the argument for a “good” xFIP/FIP. tRA would work wouldn’t it?

by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Formulas

xFIP = [(13*HR + 3*BB – 2*K) / (IP)] * defensive, park factor adjustment
baBIP = [(H – HR) / (AB – K – HR + SF)]

  • xFIP takes HRs into account, while baBIP doesn’t, as well as BBs and IP (outs / 3)

Pitchers with flyball tendencies tend to be around .300

Guys with GB tendencies tend to average around .290. Relievers are generally a little lower than starters in both cases.

Reyes, Thole, Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis, Martinez, Tejada...

by Stephen Schmidt on May 27, 2010 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

is LD%

factored into any pitching stat? i would think it’d be a good component for a FIP/ERA mutant

by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

It's factored in tERA

Which is why I don’t love tERA. Line-drive % isn’t really a skill for a pitcher.

by James Kannengieser on May 27, 2010 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

it's not?

wouldn’t guys putting good wood on the ball be an indication that he doesn’t have that good of “stuff”? I could very well be wrong but that is why i liked tra more than field independent stats

by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I think with a large enough sample you could consider it a trend,

but I wouldn’t really call it a skill (much like BABIP in that regard).

2005: 17.5
2006: 19.8
2007: 18.4
2008: 22.4
2009: 16.4

by James Kannengieser on May 27, 2010 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

that's crazy

i have been thinking that a low LD% was a strong indicator of whether or not a pitcher was being good/bad or lucky for a long time now. thanks for making me feel stupid james. dick

I like tRA because it takes into account GB% and IFF%.

xFIP factors FB% some.

I don’t believe LD% is factored into the HR rate there, even though a few HR’s are likely classified as line drives. tERA does though I believe.

by Syler on May 27, 2010 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

SJ

yea xFIP has no effect on balls in play

via THT

Expected Fielding Independent Pitching. This is an experimental stat that adjusts FIP and “normalizes” the home run component. Research has shown that home runs allowed are pretty much a function of flyballs allowed and home park, so xFIP is based on the average number of home runs allowed per outfield fly. Theoretically, this should be a better predicter of a pitcher’s future ERA.

by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 7:53 PM EDT reply actions

Definitely more hitter-dependent

As far as I know, the pitchers are (to a large extent) at the mercy of the hitter, as far as line drives go.

That split-change, which Halladay also throws ...

has made a big difference. Pelfrey can now mix up his two fastballs with the split-change – which not only moves down and in, but offers the biggest differential in velocity.

Time will tell, but he looks like he’s developed a level of confidence and presence out there on the mound that he didn’t have before.

So they shortened the school day?

I know in the US people talk about how the rest of the world has more school days per year. But what they don’t realize it that US kids are in school for more hours than anyone else. Really, school should be 9 to 2, four days a week. That’s my stance

by Evan_S on May 27, 2010 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Here in

Mexico they go 7.30-2 in most public schools. I wouldn’t have minded getting out later, like 5.30. It’s not like kids do anything useful with their time! In the UK one big consideration is transport – since we don’t really have those school buses like in the US, it’s dependent on fitting it around the work day.

2013 ALL-STAR GAME(TM) LOGO CONTEST

Major League Baseball has formally announced that Citi Field will be the site of the 2013 All-Star Game. (see video) In light of this, I have decided to launch an All-Star Game logo contest. To help get you started, I provided all of you with a sample All-Star Game logo. (click here to embiggen) If you wish to participate, please enter your submission with an image below, in the comments section. The contest ends on May 31st. I will choose a select number of finalists, and the community will vote on which of those logos is the best one.

Can you create a better logo than the sample logo provided? Then, give it a shot. Good luck to all participants!
