yeah
it’s starting to look REALLY BAD here in nj (bergen county). getting ridiculously dark and stuff where i am, and i’ve heard some thunder
By the way
I’m returning to the game thread after a vacation break, and recently, an allergy-related illness. I think the game links idea has died down, as well.
Lets Go Mets Go
LOL
But actually, I visited some family down in N.C., and I noticed that everybody got sick, including my brother and sister. It was epidemic – many people at the local Wal-mart were sick, too
Lets Go Mets Go
Lick 'em Pelfrey!! Lick 'em!

“Patch” ‘shudder’.
This season I will expect the worst but I will be prepared for 'worser'.

i hope the same happens
but also to: manuel (both would be nice), utley, rollins (if he’s present), werth, lidge, etc.
and eric bruntlett oh my god i hate you
We need to capture some of that lightning
And sweep (or lick) the Phillies into a shutout sweep!
Lets Go Mets Go
This game better get in
I don’t want a rain shortened sweep of these fuckers, I want a full fledged one
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
any sweep is a good sweep
but id rather do it right too

it is banging by me.....and pouring, too.
but it may be just a burst.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
Back in DC now... What a week in NY!
I’m 2 for 2 at Citi after last night (saw them beat up the Yanks on Sunday night as well).
Rod should be an allstar
1st in runs, hrs.
6th in average.
they make it incredibly easy to vote 25 times, because they save who you voted for
you just have to keep entering in that 5 digit image verification deal
I was about to say the same thing!
OK, Placi! Once you get to second [on the steal], take a look at the signs of Rod, that mother******. Then, convey the message to Chase.

I think this little winning streak proves out how important Reyes is to this team.
He is finding his stroke and for the first time this season… He looks like the player we remember.
I think this little winning streak proves the randomness of it all.
how you can go from suck to great in less than a week, and back again.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
I thought that too... I thought about how it might only be a week before we are hearing about Jerry on the hot-seat again.
I’m just trying to enjoy it now.

Looks like we are facing Milwaukee's top 3 pitchers
this weekend. It’s surprising how bad they’ve been. Hope they stay down.
It's a battle of the worst road team in the NL vs the worst home team in the NL
This is a series we have to win

I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.
Gallardo?
Lots of walks, yes, but a 3.63 xFIP and .307 baBIP suggests he is still a force to be reckoned with!
Lets Go Mets Go
isn't that
league average babip? or right around league average
by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions
xFIP
has nothing to do with balls in play though…..
at least as far as i know
by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions
All things considered
A pitcher with a low baBIP and/or good pitch economy is also more likely to have a lower xFIP as well (and vice-versa), so these two can be used in conjunction to determine certain facets of performance.
Lets Go Mets Go
but considering that
babip can only effect ERa/WHIP etc. and no field independent stats then it doesn’t strengthen the argument for a “good” xFIP/FIP. tRA would work wouldn’t it?
by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Pitchers with flyball tendencies tend to be around .300
Guys with GB tendencies tend to average around .290. Relievers are generally a little lower than starters in both cases.

is LD%
factored into any pitching stat? i would think it’d be a good component for a FIP/ERA mutant
by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions
It's factored in tERA
Which is why I don’t love tERA. Line-drive % isn’t really a skill for a pitcher.
by James Kannengieser on May 27, 2010 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions
it's not?
wouldn’t guys putting good wood on the ball be an indication that he doesn’t have that good of “stuff”? I could very well be wrong but that is why i liked tra more than field independent stats
by MetsKnicksRutgers on May 27, 2010 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions
I think with a large enough sample you could consider it a trend,
but I wouldn’t really call it a skill (much like BABIP in that regard).

And it’s safe to assume that the best hitters often have high LD rates (that is, higher than 19%). I’m guessing Rod Carew falls into that category.
Lets Go Mets Go
It doesn't correlate strongly year-to-year
A quick look at Johan’s LD%:
2004: 16.2
2005: 17.5
2006: 19.8
2007: 18.4
2008: 22.4
2009: 16.4
by James Kannengieser on May 27, 2010 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions
that's crazy
i have been thinking that a low LD% was a strong indicator of whether or not a pitcher was being good/bad or lucky for a long time now. thanks for making me feel stupid james. dick

I like tRA because it takes into account GB% and IFF%.
I just make sure to check if LD% is around 20% ish and move on from that.
In lobby campaign for Chris Carter.
xFIP factors FB% some.
I don’t believe LD% is factored into the HR rate there, even though a few HR’s are likely classified as line drives. tERA does though I believe.

yea xFIP has no effect on balls in play
via THT
Expected Fielding Independent Pitching. This is an experimental stat that adjusts FIP and “normalizes” the home run component. Research has shown that home runs allowed are pretty much a function of flyballs allowed and home park, so xFIP is based on the average number of home runs allowed per outfield fly. Theoretically, this should be a better predicter of a pitcher’s future ERA.

He's not Irish
He’s got an incredibly posh English accent. He was head boy at Eton. I never found his accent too shaky, though I hear from people I met in DC that it’s sometimes a bit off.
It's a Tyler Perry movie
that is about a single-father trying to win back his kids from the evil baby’s mom. It’s a good movie & it has Gabrielle Union in it.

He and Candy are heading home for the holiday and a snow storm diverts from their destination. They end up on a hayride of mishaps … a series of hilarious events that go bad because Candy is such a dufus, but a lovable dufus.
There are a bunch of classic scenes in it. Hilarious.

They just met each other on the plane ride and Candy kind of pushes himself into Martin’s life … and causes all of these problems.

That split-change, which Halladay also throws ...
has made a big difference. Pelfrey can now mix up his two fastballs with the split-change – which not only moves down and in, but offers the biggest differential in velocity.
Time will tell, but he looks like he’s developed a level of confidence and presence out there on the mound that he didn’t have before.

you need a hard drive of some sort

Wow
In the UK high school starts at 9am, maybe 8.45 for registration, tops. In fact they just moved one to 10am with big improvements in attendance and results, citing scientific studies that teenagers need an hour or more extra sleep

You're not supposed
to up here either, but I guess I got lucky . I was a good student when I was awake though.
There may be sunny days ahead.
In my first year at university
I would without fail fall asleep every week in British History VI in the front row of the lecture hall. 9am lectures, ugh. Good job we only had 3 hours of compulsory lectures a week….
One time Niall Ferguson put a slide of himself in his trunks on the beach and did the old “how did that get in there?” line to see how many people were asleep.
I'd sleep in class, but I really liked a bed
There were days where my mom or dad would drop me off, then I’d take the bus right back and go back to sleep
guess I was lucky
my parents left before even I did in high school. I could erase the message on the phone about me missing class when I woke up
yeah same with my mom
but she was and is still so oblivious
So they shortened the school day?
I know in the US people talk about how the rest of the world has more school days per year. But what they don’t realize it that US kids are in school for more hours than anyone else. Really, school should be 9 to 2, four days a week. That’s my stance
Here in
Mexico they go 7.30-2 in most public schools. I wouldn’t have minded getting out later, like 5.30. It’s not like kids do anything useful with their time! In the UK one big consideration is transport – since we don’t really have those school buses like in the US, it’s dependent on fitting it around the work day.
you damned kids

he talks too much
no-one pays to see the ump
After Buerhle's 2nd balk,
he muttered something to himself & West baited him into an argument, which got Mark tossed.
There may be sunny days ahead.
He hired a publicist to tell everyone he was umping the Red Sox series
and reiterated his earlier comments about the Yanks and Sox playing too long in a game
basically this is the gist
but it all breaks down to he is talking too much and MLB wants to shut him up
Here's the kicker!
MLB reprimanded West during a phone conversation Thursday and will continue to consult with the World Umpires Assocation – of which West is president – to determine the severity of his punishment.
