Fun with numbers: WAR/162 games, 2006-2010
I just thought it'd be interesting to see how various current Mets have performed over the past 5 years. It doesn't measure ability to stay on the field, of course. This is all baseball-reference WAR. I left out relievers and small sample size guys...well, except Ike.
Carlos Beltran: 7.5
Johan Santana: 6.4
David Wright: 5.6
Angel Pagan: 5.0
Jose Reyes: 4.8
Fernando Tatis: 3.7
Jason Bay: 3.2
Ike Davis: 3.0
Henry Blanco: 3.0
Rod Barajas: 2.6
John Maine: 2.2
Luis Castillo: 1.7
Gary Matthews Jr: 1.3
Mike Pelfrey: 1.3
Jeff Francoeur: 0.8
R.A. Dickey: 0.5
Oliver Perez: 0.3
Alex Cora: –0.2
And just for comparison, here's a few assorted players around the league:
Brian Schneider: 1.2
Vic Torino: 3.6
Cody Ross: 3.3
Endy Chavez: 3.2
Barry Zito: 2.5
Scott Kazmir: 5.0
Brian Bannister: 2.0
Albert Pujols: 9.1
Blastings Thrilledge: –0.4
Carlos Gomez: 2.3
Ryan Howard: 4.1
Kelly Johnson: 4.2
Ryan Zimmerman: 3.7

Nice work
Although the looming reminder of our missing bat, on top, haunts us…

TotalZone really loves Pagan's fielding
UZR is kinder to Reyes.
In any case, Angel’s never played a full season as a starter, so I wouldn’t exactly take that 5 WAR to the bank. It certainly looks nice, though.
UZR does too
He’s at 7.4 on the year, fourth in the majors at any position and over a full run higher than the next CF, Franklin Gutierrez. +/- doesn’t love him as much and has him seventh at plus 5.
Very surprised about Tatis.

Interesting that WAR has Blanco ahead of Barajas' mighty ten homers.
That OBP is just a killer.
This is an average 162 game season over the last 5 years
So Barajas’s 10 homers this year are just a small part of it.
Henry Blanco has been as valuable as Jason Bay (within the margin of error)?
That can’t be right. And Tatis has been a half a win better than Bay?
Henry Blanco is one of the best defensive catchers
Bay is a mediocre defensive LF. Over a hypothetical 162 games, Blanco is about 43 runs better in the field.
Meanwhile, Bay is enormously better offensively, but his average line is depressed somewhat by his awful 2007.
Tatis similarly benefits from TotalZone liking his in OF/1B fielding about 20 runs better than Bay.
Of course, Tatis and Blanco have each only had around 700-800 PA over the past 5 years, so it’s not a huge sample size. But they’ve certainly been exemplary bench guys.
