Dallas Braden is the 19th pitcher to throw a perfect game
See what happens when you don't walk on his mound?

I guess that might extend his 15 minutes of fame.

The sub headline was about his mother dying of cancer
while Braden was in HS. Not to be insensitive, but exactly what did that have to do with anything?

Yeah, that doesn't really fit as a sub-headline
But I’m sure you know people will play anything up for a good story.

It's fit to be mentioned even disregarding Mother's Day
But as the sub-headline, it just seems out of place. Better to leave information like that for that actual article.

I get that it's Mothers Day
(which btw has no apostrophe). But how old is this kid? If his mom had died last week or earlier in the year, I would get it. If she died a few years ago, it’s tough for him, but not so relevant.

Note the article's source
“Mother” and “Cancer” were the watchwords of the day for MLB, given their massive tie-in charity promotion with Susan Komen. A stretch, sure, but MLB were stretching all day, and it’s more topically relevant than, say, a pink Louisville Slugger.)
Also: “She [Mother’s Day Founder Anna Jarvis] was specific about ”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother’s_Day#Spelling">the location of the apostrophe; it was to be a singular possessive, for each family to honour their mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world."
(Meanwhile, Teachers College at CU, no apostrophe, irony of ironies.)

And it is relevant because today is mother's day and his mom has passed
Who cares if it was yesterday or 5 years ago? It’s probably emotional as hell for him. He’s still borderline a kid.
I stand corrected re the apostrophe
But I still didn’t think that it deserved the sub headline about his mother. And that’s the only place I saw his mother mentioned at that place. Every other article I saw was talking about his grandmother and her A-Rod comment before talking about his mother. I’m not trying to be insensitive about it, but the placement seemed forced.

it annoys me that basically anything he does from now on
some reporter, and yankees fans, are going to find a way to involve the yankees in the discussion.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
They try to find their way into pretty much everything.
But this does make it easier for them, sadly.

he said he CAN care less
either he cares or he is just like the millions of other people that for some reason cannot say “I can’t care less”.
Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.

so in other words
he IS taking something away from this accomplishment. Good to know nyy27hbu is as big a douche as his hero A-Rod.
Oh, and Dallas Braden rules.

Hey A-Rod
Get off my lawnmound!

I just took a look at DRays Bay and they’re flipping out over this. Um, guys? It’s one loss. You still have the best record in baseball, and the best run differential. You have a wicked awesome young lineup and rotation.
I’d give my left nut for the Mets to have the roster the Rays do. If you want to trade rosters for a team that loses a lot more but at least doesn’t have perfect games thrown at them, be my guest.

they've had 2 perfect games thrown against them in the last 2 years
do we get to play them this year? Maybe we can have one too!

Of course.
Anything Dallas Braden does this season is now linked to that one time he yelled at Alex Rodriguez, that other time he discussed Alex Rodriguez during an interview, and that other time where his grandma brought up Alex Rodriguez after her grandson pitched a perfect game.
As it should be, of course.

Their existance over us is annoying.
I wouldn’t be surprised if I hear this week some fool say Rodriguez “inspired” Braden against Tampa.
There may be sunny days ahead.
True or not
Braden is connected to Rodriguez because he connected himself to Rodriguez. People may make pronouncements like “Anger at Rodriguez Inspired Braden” or some such words but it is only because Braden chose to tie himself to Rodriguez through various tantrums.
Basically, congratulations to Dallas Braden, but also whatever. If he ever complains about being asked about/connected to Rodriguez, I hope a sportswriter tells him to shove it.

That is very true,
& I’d wish they’d both shut up. It’s aggravating to listen to talk about “unwritten rules” and all that crap when that time could be better used analyzing the games instead.
There may be sunny days ahead.
But I imagine if he had connected himself to nearly any other player on any
other team, no one would even bring it up. Like why was CC being asked about Braden?
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
Sure.
If he had yelled at Brett Gardner, probably no one would have cared. But he didn’t; he decided to throw a hissy-fit at one of the best players in baseball. That draws attention and continuing “controversy.” Blart.
I guess CC was asked about Braden to verify whether or not people talked in the 209.
