Mets Root For USA in World Cup
Note that even when it comes to soccer, Frenchy is a dumbass:
"England, that's kind of our arch rival when it comes to soccer," outfielder Jeff Francoeur said.
No, not really.

Are we supposed to have arch rivals in soccer? Does anyone really actually care about soccer, regardless of ESPN's advertising blitz?

Not according to the polls I've seen (on the latter issue).

yeah mexico is the closest thing we have to a rival
and most americans dont care, but that doesn’t mean there’s still 50-60 million who do. big country. the ratings are always through the roof regardless.

Well, by that rationale most Americans don't care about baseball. Or anything else.
"Seriously, Lana, call Kenny Loggins ‘cause you’re in the danger zone."
50 or 60 million?
That many, really? I think most of the Americans who are watching the World Cup don’t really follow soccer; they’re just watching it because the USA is in it, and because the tournament is a big deal. For example, one of my friends invited me over yesterday to watch the US/England match, and I have never heard him once talk about soccer in the decade I’ve known him.

Exactly this. I saw the same thing during the hockey game for the Olympic gold a few months ago.
People I never knew had any interest in hockey whatsoever were suddenly very hateful of Sydney Crosby; it was almost a little comical.

Tangent Alert!
That annoyed the hell out of me (the Crosby-hating by people who just found out what he even looked like).
One of my buddies actually had a girl in one of his classes (might’ve been marketing) ask why Crosby was playing for Team Canada when he plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins who are an american team…
FYI: I’m a huge hockey fan in case you couldn’t tell from my profile picture.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
I wholeheartedly disagree.
Raking up points and talking to the refs, as a captain should, does not a little cocksucker make.

The USA England game did a 6.1 in the ratings
That’s nowhere near 50-60 million. Americans just don’t care about soccer.
So?
It was appointment TV for lots of people. I saw several bars which were packed and showing the game, and certainly lots of people threw parties to watch the game. Those things mean that the ratings are artificially deflated (like lots of sporting events, which people tend to watch in groups). I still don’t think 50 million+ people watched it, but more people did than the ratings suggest.

I agree.
Hockey and soccer (the World Cup at least) are games which fans tend to watch in groups, hence, like you said, ratings tend to suffer. I was merely suggesting that the timing was not conducive to casual sports fans who would stop on the game and watch if they were flipping through the channels and saw that it was on.

I'm hoping for the pitch to open up and swallow both teams when Mexico plays France.
Good god I hate both of those teams.

I care, if that helps.
Mexico’s our biggest rival, but the England game was pretty huge. It wasn’t that dumb of a thing to say.

I really don't understand why you would watch soccer
When you could watch the Mets slam the Orioles and then watch Game 5 of what could end up a classic NBA Finals.

except nets basketball thats beautiful
but outside of that I agree. And I go to a basketball school. it bores me to tears.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
I went to a WNBA game once.
They can’t dunk, but they have great fundamentals.

Me three.
I’m a Nets fan, but I haven’t been to a game for a decade, if not more.

I despise the NBA.
I hope upon hope that there is a lockout next year (for the NFL too).
Save Jenrry Mejia!
I want the rest of sportsdom to know this hockey fans pain!
I’m a vengeful person, what can I say.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
That's only because the Dominican Republic isn't in the Cup
Zing!
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.
