LARRY RETIRING??
This was discussed in the game thread but I didn't see a fanshot about it. Apparently it wouldn't be until the end of the season.

Heard that too, but he went 2-5 tonight with a HR
He’s having nagging injuries and most recent a cortisone shot in his knuckle. I would imagine after this yr he might hang’em up not this yr with Hotlanta porducing.
i propose the entire AA community gets tickets to his last game at citi (19th of september)
and give him a proper sendoff

which kind of proper send off?
the “Laaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyy” sendoff?
Or a legit standing O
I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.
Moon him.

That seems the most legit to me.
If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
YES!
Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.

This.
It would signify to him just how incredible a player he was to be the absolute Villain in Mets Lore.
Kind of like being Reggie Miller to the Knicks Fan Spike Lee.
I'd do both
the Mets fan in me says f*ck him
the baseball fan in me says I’ll be happy to see him in Cooperstown in 5 years
2009 Did Not Happen
Yup
Ideally, I’d coordinate it so he would receive a full-throated Lar-ry prior to his first AB, and a standing O after his last. As between the 2, though, I’d go with standing O. He’s the player we hate to have play against us, but would all secretly love to have on our team.

yeah this is what i was thinking
i’d love to the boo the shit out of him the first few at bats, but right before whatever is his last at bat, pretty much every mets fan should give him a badass standing ovation, so much so that he’d have to leave the batters box to acknowledge it. shit i’d even cheer if he hit a home run in that spot.
sometimes you just gotta tip your hat and admit he’s been our daddy

Braves fan here
I love Larry and it would make me very happy if you gave him a standing O. :)

It would piss me off if some Phillies fans started dancing when Jose Reyes came up

Actually come to think of it
how about splitting the difference with a legit “Lar-ry! Lar-ry!” chant?

Honestly: We're not from Philadelphia. Let's be classy.
I think Rey-O nailed it.
[E]very mets fan should give him a [] standing ovation, so much so that he’d have to leave the batters box to acknowledge it.
If that happened — if 40k Mets fans stood up and chanted “Chi-pper-Jo-onz”, clapping — it’d be a defining moment for the fan base of this franchise. Compare that to Philly, booing Mike Schmidt, throwing batteries (!) at J.D. Drew, and cheering the injuries of their adversaries.
Let’s make it a point to be mensches.
No need to be all ""Chi-pper-Jo-onz"
I think a “Laaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyy” standing ovation would do just fine.

we always do larry though
if we’re trying to salute him, lets at least call him chipper once

He named his son Shea because he hit so well there.
He can call himself whatever he wants but in Queens, his name is Larry.
No, nuts to Larry Jones.
Like Kendy Namo says, I’d love to take him out for a beer and have him end up drinking urine.

Really?
I mean, he’s not a racist/homophobe/xenophobe like John Rocker, he’s not a dirty player like Victorino, and he’s not a cowardly, steroids-fueled headhunter like Roger Clemens. He’s just a guy who’s done really, really well against us. The couple of public gestures he’s made – e.g. naming his kid Shea, the “they can go home and put on their Yankee gear” comments – have felt more like (semi-)good-natured tweaks than real insults.

I just don't like the guy.
Great player and all, but I just can’t like the guy. He played for the Braves. Nuts to him.

Well said
May have crushed you Mets, but you can’t deny that he’s a good player

No one is saying he's not a good player,
But I don’t remember Knicks fans giving Reggie Miller a grand send off. I don’t think Jets fans are going to give Tom Brady a standing O. Those guys are HOFers as well. Larry was a great heel because he embraced the role and liked being the bad guy to Mets fans, so I get why some want to give him a sendoff but I also understand why he should be treated like he always (and also likes to be) teated by Mets fans.

Bah.
Football and basketball are different animals when it comes to fans.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
Good point. Disagree, though.
I think in practice, I am more often right than you’d believe. During McGwire’s march to 62, he played a double-header at Shea and crushed a homer, his 50th of the year, resulting in a huge ovation. Baseball’s a genteel sport, and we respect the game, generally.
Actually, Reggie did
Reyes, Thole, Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis, Martinez, Tejada...

Yeah I was gonna post something about that
I see Reggie and Chipper as similar heels. Both deserving of a brief and respectful sendoff. I’m not suggesting a Mike Piazza type tribute video, but a nice standing ovation and Larrrryyyyyy chant, followed by a tip of the cap from Chipper would be a nice moment.

sorry, man.
Too bad there’s no “Edit” Button. It’s happened to me where I make a comment, then when I research it after the fact, I find that I made a mistake and a million people come after me saying “Nyah Nyah! You f’ed up!” and stuff.
Thanks,
Completely blanked about that. Like I said, Chipper was Chipper because he embraced being a heel, I have no problem with a standing ovation but like I said above, in Queens, his name is Larry.
You act like it's an insult or something.
That’s his real name.
Works for me.
He’s a great player and a hands down HOFer.
I’ve never booed at a baseball game, though, so what do I know?
I'd have a hard time not giving the guy a standing ovation or a curtain call.
We hate Rocker and Dicktorino for being wastes of oxygen, we hate Chipper because he’s just damn good at what he does and plays for a rival. He’s been nothing but class, clearly likes coming to NY and the fanbase here, and has really earned the type of send off we’d give a longtime Met who was retiring.

This might be a little overboard. A polite and respectful acknowledgement of his career is fine; just to say “Hey, Larry, we’ve had our differences in the past but despite it all, we just want you to know that we respect you.”
Save Jenrry Mejia!

maybe a long-term mediocre met?
i mean I don’t think he should get the same send off guys like Wright and Reyes will get.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
yeah
its not even comparable. piazza got a video montage and ceremony and awards. for chipper, all we need to do is give him a nice ovation and a tip of the cap.

Yeah, I was meaning that as a guy who spent some seasons with the Mets and then moved on later in his career
Maybe like a Ron Darling or Fonzie type would get in his last game if we knew they were retiring

A similar, but different, case
I was at Mike Hampton’s first game back against the Mets after he signed with the Rockies. I appreciated Hampton for doing just about everything we asked of him in 2000, including a dominant performance to clinch the NL pennant, but like all Met fans, I was annoyed that he left us for the CO school system (little did I know how well that would turn out for us). So I decided to boo him WHILE giving him a standing (clapping) ovation. Judging by the rest of the fans’ behavior, they were not nearly as conflicted as I was.
by dontstopbelieving on Jun 16, 2010 3:22 PM EDT reply actions
this one wasn't tough
he was a met for 1 year, and he left for a boatload of money and nothing else. he can get booed, no prob.

I have to wonder, though. Was Mike the one who made that decision or was it HIS WIFE that told him
that they were leaving for Colorado?
perhaps SHE wears the pants in the family. heheh.
Didn't She Pitch for the Mets?
‘Cause I don’t remember seeing a “Man” pitch for this team before with the last name Benson.
