By that, you mean something like this?

At the very least,

If two teams play a game in any given stadium with variable dimensions, there’s nobody at the OF fences to move them back and forth, depending on who’s playing. So, it’s a level playing field between them both. The way it is now, I think it’s fine, as long as we avoid the “more extreme than Coors Field” type of parody.

the problem is that a team that plays 81 games in a stadium like this has

Baseball's unique that different stadiums have different dimensions

A standard field would take away some of the charm of baseball

by Evan_S on Jun 19, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Compromise

a) The RF/LF distances down the line must be between 310 and 350 feet (sorry, Johnny Pesky)
b) CF distance must be between 395 and 410 feet
c) The square footage of all baseball fields in fair territory must be 110,000 square feet (this is the linchpin here)
d) The field design must be approved by the commissioner of baseball (this one is already a given)

kevin asked jerry a series of questions about maine

will takahashi leave the rotation? -- probably not
can maine pitch out of the bullpen? --never proven that he can
will maine get another rehab start? -- that’ll be determined later
what role does john maine have? -— maybe we’ll fit him in on an off day

My big issue is this

“Can maine pitch out of the bullpen? – never proven that he can.” The way that proven bullpen veterans Nieve and Mejia did prior to getting bullpen roles.

by deadspy3 on Jun 19, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

before or after fame?

and i went to Emory and there were plenty of people accepted who were still rather dumb – some even were slow readers

to your above – i just dont understand why people give so much time and love to someone because they can sing and dance half naked. people want to be her and instead of focusing on things that will matter later in life just learn everything they can about her.

by astromets on Jun 19, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Before fame

As to your second part, the same can be said for anything. I don’t get why so many people give so much time and love to men in silly uniforms playing a children’s game being paid millions of $$$, instead of focusing on things that will matter later in life.

by James Kannengieser on Jun 19, 2010 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Entertainment is pretty subjective

You can legitimately argue that the artistic merits of one artist are ‘better’ than another, but it’s impossible to say someone is more or less proficient at entertaining their fans. It’s all about the reaction.

by deadspy3 on Jun 19, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

i was thinking that when i said it

but i get shit done when im not watching the mets. and either as a young’un getting in better physical shape and learning about team work and being respectful of stuff or now trying to study them in a statistical way that expands my mind at least is better than me trying to be a superslut who parties a lot

by astromets on Jun 19, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I suspect

a lot of her party girl image is contrived. Her publicist (or her, if she’s that savvy) will no doubt have the idea that the more photos that get published of her falling out of a limo, frankly, the better (for her record sales I mean).

by deadspy3 on Jun 19, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

It's all about perspective here

You like baseball, you don’t like Gaga. Baseball to you as a young’n was about physical shape and teamwork — for others it could’ve been about overbearing parents and terrible pressure to succeed. You say Gaga fans are about being a superslut and partying a lot — a Gaga fan could counter that it’s about musical talent, chasing your dreams, entertaining people and being an individual.

by James Kannengieser on Jun 19, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

i can understand the being an individual

but then its supporting the selfish attitude, which yes happens in team sports unfortunately too. but i think more people want to be like gaga because it means they can live the fortunate life, not because they want to be the best musician ever – another difference between athletes and moviestar/musicians. i dont think either players or actors/musicians deserve as much attention as they are given by the public – more love needs to be given to the geniuses who continue to improve our ability to track these people, aka scientists and inventors. most people cant name any living scientist other than steven hawkings, and they hate him for some reason. but they can name 300 athletes/moviestars/musicians who entertain them.

by astromets on Jun 19, 2010 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

but not the whole world

the western world for sure – look at india, israel and japan though, they constantly have some of the top minds in the world now and are progressing because of them. the future does not lie in entertainment

by astromets on Jun 19, 2010 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

It is definitely interesting how different societies

deal with their ‘brains’. France and Mexico for example, have always used government money to allow public intellectuals to just produce their work (being paid to think, essentially), in contrast to the UK and US where book production and fund-generating are huge parts of academic life.

India and Japan have both had historical class structures that have supported ‘thinkers’, it’s true, but India is definitely moving towards a much more cutthroat economic model, and Japan is just going to fall off a cliff financially. Then I think we’ll see a similar commercialisation of education.

I don’t see India becoming a developed nation before the food and fuel crises reach critical points, by the way, so I fear that potential for progress will all be for nothing.

by astromets on Jun 19, 2010 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

OK

but there’s a big difference between that and being a superstar. Those academics (in the UK at least) who cross over and become TV stars are generally not considered that amazing or innovatory, they can just talk well and/or look pretty.

by deadspy3 on Jun 19, 2010 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

but dont they make money?

and if you study something interesting enough you can write a good selling book. or just choose a random topic that you can write about, like this awful professor from my undergrad -

by astromets on Jun 19, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Academics

are pretty poorly paid on the whole, certainly in the UK. And my friends who work in U.S. universities are slightly better paid but have pretty bad conditions. I realise it’s all relative – they’re doing something they like, and not having to work down the mines or whatever, but both for they money these people bring (in terms of tuition fees etc), and the more general educational development of society they contribute to, they get peanuts.

by deadspy3 on Jun 19, 2010 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

to your above – the overall benefit they get is in satisfaction of their life. i believe it Aristotle that basically said studying was the most satisfying aspect of life because it is the only action that is in itself self-gratifying – though I know i butchered how nicely he put it

by astromets on Jun 19, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh I agree with that, for sure

But I also think it would be better for society as a whole if the contribution of ‘thinkers’ was taken a bit more seriously, and not simply in terms of how much they contribute to the economy.

I fear that this series will turn out to be a carbon-copy of the one in CitiField, except in Reverse.

Remember? We lost the First game and won the next two? God, I hope that doesn’t happen and we can at least win this series.

2013 ALL-STAR GAME(TM) LOGO CONTEST

Major League Baseball has formally announced that Citi Field will be the site of the 2013 All-Star Game. (see video) In light of this, I have decided to launch an All-Star Game logo contest. To help get you started, I provided all of you with a sample All-Star Game logo. (click here to embiggen) If you wish to participate, please enter your submission with an image below, in the comments section. The contest ends on May 31st. I will choose a select number of finalists, and the community will vote on which of those logos is the best one.

Can you create a better logo than the sample logo provided? Then, give it a shot. Good luck to all participants!
