Goldstein Talks Mets Prospects
via MetsMinorLeagueBlog.com
If you're into the Mets' farm system this is a really interesting interview with BP's Kevin Goldstein that hits on Wilmer's prospect stock, FMart's health, Holt's long-term role and a whole bunch more.

Goldstein is pretty level-headed about Mejia
Nice to hear.
Trying to believe is my full-time occupation.
That's a good interview
Goldstein thinks Flores will eventually move to 3rd. My question is that with David there for the forseeable future, wouldn’t it be wiser to move Wilmer to a position like left-field once they move him off of SS?

The line of thinking with prospects
is to keep them at the harder defensive position until they either prove they can’t handle it or they start getting to the upper levels where they might be blocked. This probably doesn’t hurt their development while keeping their possible trade value as high as possible.
Flores won't likely be ready for years
Wright may be a first basemen by the time he’s ready.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
Well Ike might be at 1B for a longtime
so that leaves us with Wright and the Todd Hundley experiment.

Ike has played RF before
& with the questions about Fernando’s ability to stay healthy, maybe Ike will move there eventually.

i don't think he's played rf before
there were ideas about moving him there with his arm, and because his bat would play better there, but I don’t think he’s ever actually played there.

According to his Baseball Reference page,
he did play RF before, albeit only for two games. I wasn’t able to find any information about whether he played in the Olympics.

doesnt list position, but justin smoak being there and the low number of plays and fielding % indicates he didn’t play 1B
Goldstein is the man and
I was surprised that he wasn’t wholly against the Mejia thing.
It odd that he was so tempered when discussing Flores. I get it, he is young, but I feel like he used to rave about him, and now he is just meh. He is justified in curbing his enthusiasm because he is so young, but it was still odd to see him put down the Flores pom poms.
How many are you talking?
Because if Flores is 19. And you give him a full year at each level he is looking at 4-5 years before he makes it up to the Mets. By that time Wright will be 31-32 and Ike will be 27-28. So wouldnt it make sense to turn him into a LF so he can be comfortable by time Bays contract is up. Hopefully F-Mart is up and really contributing in RF and Cap’n Kirk is in CF.
Line up looks like this
C- Thole
1B-Davis
2B-Havens
SS-Reyes
3B-Wright
RF-Martinez
CF Cap’n Kirk
LF-Flores

How long do you think it takes a baseball player to learn LF?
Ryan Braun moved to LF from 3rd base in one offseason, same for Pujols, Chipper Jones and Cabrera. Soriano went from 2nd to LF in an offseason and despite how Murphy looked, he really wasn’t that terrible out there with one offseason. Keep his value up and keep him at the most difficult position possible, because it’s tough to know what the team will look like in the future.
Murphy thanked Omar and Jerry for rescuing him from left field where he admitted
he was not up to it.

I always thought
it was a pretty small sample size. I think 7-8 months and we’d have been able to make some kind of judgement.
Ryan Brauns still a butcher though

if flores shows he can play 3B
i would think the move would be to move wright to LF. yeah his d is better than given credit for, but he will be slowing down then.

The case is closed, so I'm not sure why this is even being brought up
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?

like his comments on captain kirk
hope he gets better soon and gets hot like the second half of last season
I'd sell "high" on Kirk.
I honestly don’t get the love there. Goldstein nails it — he profiles to be a decent-at-best CF who, if his defense can’t hold up for CF, won’t have the bat to play the corners.
if he has another 2 months to end the season like he did last year
he might say otherwise. for the right piece, i guess i could let him go, but i like him a lot. possible 20-20 guy, if not more. lefty. not a bad eye.
A commenter on the Goldstein interview says
Cohoon all the way up to Bingo today, and Moore to St Lucie
espn mets blog the same about cohoon
and wilmer to st lucie
that would be insane
more insane if he did it at bingo
Anyone have a BP account and know what
this is about? I’m really curious to see how hard Urbina can throw.
Nevermind
Metsminorleagueblog said he was 89-91. I was hoping he was topping 100 so that by the time he was MLB ready, he’d be throwing 110-112 with a 101 mph change. Sigh.
? we're the mets you have it backwards
if he was throwing 105 he’d be down to 89 by the time he made the ball club.

this is ridiculous by the way, from espn mets blog
Mets manager Jerry Manuel said that if Jon Niese had thrown 50 or more pitches and the rain delay were more than one hour, then he wouldn’t have returned to pitch on Tuesday night. Instead, Niese had thrown 45 pitches and the delay was 58 minutes so Niese returned.
Niese had thrown three hitless innings before the rain came down and the Mets scored eight runs in the bottom of the third. So from his last pitch of the third to his first pitch of the fourth, he sat down for 92 minutes.
he was throwing a no hitter...that was the real reason he was kept in the game
