Mets 5, Tigers 0: Knuckles Flying, Dickey Blasts Detroit

The legend of R.A. Dickey continues to, erm, grow. Dickey shut down the AL's third-best offense (by OPS), limiting the Tigers to just four hits and two walks over eight innings. Not content to dominate merely with his arm, Dickey also chipped in a seventh-inning walk and came around to score on Ike Davis's two-run double.

Dickey threw just 97 pitches in his eight innings, but was lifted in the ninth for Francisco Rodriguez, who hadn't worked since Friday night's near-debacle against the Yankees.

Jose Reyes went 3-for-4 and hit his sixth triple and home run of the year and now has a higher slugging percentage than Jason Bay, .434 to .423. His OPS is up to .761, good for fourth among National League shortstops.

This and that.

  • Angel Pagan seemed to tweak something after fouling off a pitch in the fifth inning. He was removed from the game for pinch hitter Jesus Feliciano in the seventh. The injury has been deemed a muscle spasm and Pagan's prognosis for return is day-to-day.
  • Dickey coaxed just six swinging strikes out of Tigers batters -- 6.2% of his pitches -- far fewer than his season mark of 10.9%, which is among the highest in baseball. Tim Lincecum leads the majors with a 11.9% swinging strike rate.
  • Jeff Francoeur smiled through another 0-for-4 night. His .318 wOBA is 24th among 26 qualified right fielders.
  • Incredibly, Henry Blanco saw just five pitches in his four at-bats. Blanco doesn't have time to sit around waiting for something special; he's got shit to do.

Poem by Howard Megdal

On day that saw Seinfeld make trip to the booth
Dickey makes case that his dominance is truth
Reyes' cycle bid missed only a double

Frankie just needed work which is why Dickey didn't get the shot for the CG.

What a Dickhead move, regardless. Who’s running this team, Jerry? YOU or BB-Rod?

by BrockRocks on Jun 23, 2010 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

K-Rod hadn't pitched in five games...throw in the off day as well and that's nearly a week

I’d much rather cost Dickey a complete game and have K-Rod sharp in a closer contest later than have him blow a two-run lead because he hasn’t pitched in a week and a half.

I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.

I suppose you are right but man. Back to back games where the Pitchers were almost in position

to either Get a win(Niese) or a CG(Dickey) and weren’t allowed to based on performance(niese) or Frankie whining about getting some work(Dickey).

by BrockRocks on Jun 23, 2010 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Why is it whining?

Throwing a baseball is difficult. It’s important to get your work in to stay sharp.

The Niese decision was unequivocally the right one

Niese was pitching horribly and we were on the verge of letting the Tigers back into a game we had been leading 10-0. I’m more upset about tonight’s decision, but primarily b/c I was starting Dickey in my head-to-head league and complete-game shutouts are worth 15 points :-)

everyone uses the same radar guns, and 93.7 is still one of the higher numbers in the league. Even if it’s 5 mph off, then it’s likely everyone else in the league is to so relative it’s still a pretty high number.

Right. Law of Large Numbers.

But this doesn’t hold if different stadiums use different guns. Some guns run high, some low. Just saying that arguing about whether someone reached 96 or sat at 95 is silly.

They have a 77 run differential, they’re bullpen has allowed 154 earned runs (34 of them on homeruns+ 106 bb). They’re struggles are predominately because of their bullpen. He’s also, bless his heart, a moron. He’s basically Rainman in that respect.

And francessa? He supported cat being on this team. When people said it should be Carter or Davis he said you give the job to Jacobs cause he isn a veteran. The man is an egotistical moron

to that tub’s show on occasion. He’s cut down on his jabs at the Mets, but some callers think the Yankees can get Prince Fielder.

I am a man of many facets.

Unfortunately I am also a rabid Mets fan and until AA I had no way to share my love, anger, pain, strain, and ecstasy. I once told my wife, right after she told me that our wedding was the best day of her life, that the best day of my life was October 27, 1986. I needed a place like this, and it has been both good for my marriage and my psyche.

I was fired from a job a week after the Endy's Catch game in 2006.

I was more upset by the game. And my boss was a Yankees fan who had a signed photo of Mantle and Maris in his office. Guess what I was more upset about?

That too. I was just thinking in a moment of reflection that Megdal’s statement that the Mets only winner when the difficulty is set to beginner (after the second loss to the Yanks) seems a little less true after the Tigers.

by MookieTheCat on Jun 24, 2010 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I hear you man

I love my mets, but the lack of intelligent discourse is enough to make a man crazy.

I don’t remember October 27, 1986. I was probably asleep in my He-Man footie pajamas (being 5 and all), but I remember the grand slam single and piazza’s game-after-9/11 homerun like they were yesterday.

And I also bet my wife’s best day was our wedding day.

by HotChipWillBreakYourLegs on Jun 24, 2010 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

My dad made me go to bed in the 7th inning of Game 6.

He still has not forgiven himself. By way of penance he got me a full tape of Game 6 for Christmas a few years back, recorded off of Boston TV. We watched it together and it was the best gift I’ve ever gotten.

by MookieTheCat on Jun 24, 2010 2:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Here's a story, in 1986

My dad had the option of tickets to game 2 or game 6 through his job at a large corporation that no longer exists. He chose game 2 because it was clemens vs. gooden and because “game 6 might not even happen.” Again, I was too young to go, but he took my brothers to game 2, which wasn’t very good, and missed out on the greatest game in mets history.

It’s about time I sat down and watched a baseball game with my dad. He’s a dodger fan so we have a contentious baseball relationship. BUT, he took me to mets games growing up so I wouldn’t be a yankee fan, which I will always appreciate.

by HotChipWillBreakYourLegs on Jun 24, 2010 2:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Epic. Fail.

The Clemens-Gooden game is best described as, if I quote my Mets 1986 tape right, “the combination of Gooden’s smoke and Clemens fire turned out to be a false alarm.” Worst Mets WS game to be at ever. I feel sad for you and yours.

by MookieTheCat on Jun 24, 2010 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions

As I said, I would have been asleep in footie pajamas regardless

but I feel bad for my brothers, who were 10 and 11 at the time (the latter is now a red sox fan, if you can believe that; but finds baseball distasteful on principle). My father will never live it down, because deep down I know he, the dodgers fan, loved watching him some 86 mets.

by HotChipWillBreakYourLegs on Jun 24, 2010 2:19 AM EDT up reply actions

My dad was a Dodgers fan too.

In 1956. He could never be a Yankees fan, so the Mets came to be by default.

by MookieTheCat on Jun 24, 2010 2:21 AM EDT up reply actions

honestly

I’d have made the same decision, as would most fans. Clemens vs. Gooden in a game that’s definitely going to happen >>> potential Game 6. Nobody could have predicted what would actually happen. Plus, butterfly effect and all that, maybe if your dad and bros were at game 6 the wind would have shifted ever so slightly enough that Mookie wouldn’t have fouled off one of those pitches and then we’d be even more depressed as a fanbase.

I was at Shea for the grand slam single...

The entire 7 train was singing to Grand Central, when we decided to go to a bar together. When we left the train we were walking down 42nd street, all 40 of us, when we happened upon the Braves team bus. We sat outside the hotel there singing until the cops came and told us to disperse. Don Baylor was not mused.

by MookieTheCat on Jun 24, 2010 2:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Man, you have no idea...

My roommate at the time, who is from Munich, accompanied me and my best friend at the time (his girlfriend and the most rabid Mets fan I know who can claim to be a girl), and was absolutely amazed. That was his introduction to baseball. Did I mention that the cops showed up in riot gear? It was beautiful. And we sang “Rocker takes it up the ass, doo dah, doo dah” inspired by Irish Mets fans who happened to be on the train.

by MookieTheCat on Jun 24, 2010 2:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh, and if memory fails...

This was shortly after Rocker’s not-disguised-racist comments about the 7 train. It was a simple case of the 7 train taking revenge.

what do you mean by natural?

Is it sustainable? No, probably not. But he has it, and for that reason he’s been one of the very best players in baseball this season so far. You don’t just get to take those 4.3 “wins” away from him because he had an unsustainably high BABIP – those results stand forever and Cano’s already had a successful season, and even when he regresses he’s still going to probably end up being the best 2B in the majors this year.
