Don't Stop The Voting (For David Wright)
Um...hi. I don't normally do FanPosts or anything, so this is a tad awkward. However, the powers that be told me I should post this, so I guess I will. I apologize in advance for any rookie mistakes. Anyway...
So last night I was just doing what I normally do at midnight, voting for David Wright for the All Star Game a few hundred times, because you know, I have a life. I'm not quite sure how, but a song came out of it. So here you go. It's to the tune of "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey. If you don't know the song, you've probably been living under a rock for some time, but I'll link it to you anyway. None of the Youtube videos used are mine. Please excuse the extra syllables, and enjoy.
Don’t Stop The Voting
(For David Wright)
Just a Smithtown girl, livin’ in a lonely world
She took on a midnight campaign to get David in the All Star Game
Just a Virginia boy, tonight he lost to Detroit
But he is still an All Star, vote for him anyway
A manager in a press conference room
With him in charge you’d think we’re destined for doom
But you’d get a smile if you saw David Wright
The hits go on and on and on and on
Mets fans waiting, as he’s up and down the leader boards
His homers, sailing into the night
But stupid Polanco, he’s winning just to drive us crazy
Come on, just vote for David Wright!
Working hard to help his team
He’s an All Star, that’s how it seems
Doin’ everything to vote him in
At least five more times
Some games he’ll win, some he’ll lose.
But he’s the one that you should choose
Oh the RBIs never end
They go on and on and on and on
Mets fans waiting, as he’s up and down the leader boards
His homers, sailing into the night
But stupid Polanco, he’s winning just to drive us crazy,
Come on, just vote for David Wright!
[Insert guitar solo here as video clip of David Wright making amazing catches, dives, home runs, stolen bases, RBIs, and all the other All Star worthy things he does on a daily basis...something kinda like this]
Don’t stop the voting
Hold onto that feeling
He deserves to play come on now people
Don’t stop the voting
Hold onto that feeling
He deserves to play come on now people
...k the end.

I saw the beginnings of this on twitter last night.
I didn’t know it progressed into a full song.
Nice work. Rec’d.

Is the Sopranos responsible for turning this pretty good, not great song
into a quasi-classic? Has Journey been relevant since 1985?
Sorry about that, just a vastly over played song. Anyway, this is fantastic and pretty funny.
Rec’d as well
Don't feel like looking it up,
but its the episode that Meg becomes a pop star and I think sleeps with Jimmy Fallon. I forgot if this was before or after they jumped the shark.
Also, the song was a karoke mainstay before family guy used it, not that I go I’m a regular at K-Town karoke bars or anything.
It was a Karaoke song
But over the last few years it’s been seen as an all time great song or whatever. Maybe that’s just my perception. I generally like the song, but it’s not that good.
Maybe I'm not with the times,
I thought it was celebrated for being perhaps the pinnacle of 80s cheesy, arena rock as well as catchy as hell. I always viewed it as almost tounge-in-cheek.
yea, this
the cover band that always used to play at the biggest bar near my college campus would play Don’t Stop Believing every single time they played, and everyone would go crazy and sing along. That and “Livin’ on a Prayer” always drew the two biggest reactions (partially b/c about half of my college were from NJ, which is apparently the only prerequisite for enjoying Bon Jovi). And this was 5-6 years ago, which was before the Sopranos final but long after the 80’s

Agree with the last 2 comments
It closed down the college bar I frequented every night. It’s a fun, catchy and cheesy 1980s rock song. It’s not supposed to be The White Album.

So true, regarding karaoke
In fact, in the Rolling Stone Album Guide, the blurb about Journey begins thusly:
Somewhere in your town, maybe even right down your street, there is a karaoke bar that stays open long past midnight. That, friend, is the place to experience the music of Journey.
This episode was on yesterday afternoon
and this thread was the first thing I thought of when I heard this song.
Haven’t decided if it’s a good thing or a bad thing yet.
If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
is it weird that I just sang this out loud?

take a random sampling of 5 girls i went to high school with
and at any given point, 2 or 3 probably have that as a facebook status
btw, a mets forum i used to read like 6 years ago used to do a song parody contest. it was pretty involved, if i remember correctly, they were randomly assigned players, old and new, to write about. might be fun here.
I was typing the exact same thing
regarding James’ excellent use of Twain not the weird al/mets thing.
he was like Alan Alda doing his impersonation of Groucho Marx before either of them were born
Plus, he helped Picard and Guinan stop the alien hobonappers from the future and return Data’s head on ST: TNG.
I was watching one yesterday where Striker was being held by Romulans in like a virtual world 16 years in the furure
and he new something was up cause Data said “can’t.” So, yeah. That was completely irrelevant to everything.

Megdal better be looking over his shoulder
while he’s running for GM, somebody’s about to be the new AA poet laureate
As long as you're voting for Wright, write-in Andres Torres, Giants OF.
He’s 3rd in the NL in WAR, hitting .287/.389/.469.
My ballot: 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, C, (DH), OF, OF, OF
AL: Morneau, Cano, Scutaro, Beltre, Mauer, Guerrero, Crawford, Hamilton, Rios
NL: Gonzalez, Utley, Reyes, Wright, Olivo, Holliday, Byrd, Torres
Damn
I didn’t realize what a good year Rios is having. Remember when we were saying last year that maybe the Mets could get him when the Jays were dumping salary? * sigh *
Oh my god
Imagine, we could have traded Church for Rios instead of Francoeur and we’d be 32 games up on the Braves right now.
I've been holding off Torres to vote for Holliday and Byrd, the two better NL OF.
And selfishly writing in Pagan.
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
Yeah I've been writing in Pagan too.
Everytime I’ve voted for David I’ve also voted for Jose, Pagan, and Joe Mauer…just because.

unless you refuse to vote for Yankees and Red Sox on general principle, like me
then vote for Andrus.
Why would you refuse to vote for the Red Sox on general principle?
Hate the fans objectively, but the organization itself doesn’t inspire any real animosity, does it?
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
Oh, fuck no.
What I mean is, isn’t there a difference between the Red Sox and the Yankees? At least from our perspective?
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
In some people's perspectives, sure
In my personal perspective, I socialize with some really obnoxious Red Sox fans, like so obnoxious that it’s to the point where I might almost consider rooting for the Yankees against the Sox just to shut them up. Plus there’s just the whole ESPN fixation on that rivalry that I find incredibly tiresome. So I can’t vote for either of them.
Yeah I'm the same way
My Red Sox hate is less than when I was in college and subjected to their fans on a regular basis but I don’t care for either team.

rec'd so hard!!!
stats, they are seriously never in Francoeur's favor
Who the hell
actually thinks Placido Polanco is more worthy of All-Star votes than David Wright? I mean, I hate the Phillies but I am not voting for Luis Castillo over Chase Utley. Geez.
I mean, if anything, at least vote for someone who deserves it but is a few places behind.
If you hate the Mets, vote for Zimmerman…I’ll deal with it. An NL East hater and want to vote for Rolen? Whatever. There’s literally NO reason to vote for Polanco when Wright is currently a FULL WIN more valuable. Better than Longoria. I know, Fangraphs writers, that’s crazy talk.
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
Yeah, pretty much.
Only ones in contention are really Longoria and Zimms. Others are either old or worse.
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
At the very least
Wright is the best offensive third baseman in baseball. Now obviously Longoria and Zimmerman are still young, and David still as 2 and a half seasons to play before he reaches 30, but here’s their WAR graphs:

this is fantastic
I don’t know why*, but lately I’ve seen a lot of different people/sites underrating Wright lately. Longoria’s fantastic, but I don’t think he’s any better than Wright. I also despise when people rank Utley over Wright – they are equals at worst.
*well, I’m sure it has something to do with the homers last year and the K’s this year, but that’s just ignorant.
2009 Did Not Happen
Utley has been better than Wright
Wright’s a slightly better hitter, but Utley is the best defensive second baseman in baseball.
Wright's an above average 3rd baseman
And, I know the positional adjustment chart lists second as tougher than third, but that’s a crock of shit. Literally the only thing tougher about 2nd is turning DP’s, which I don’t think makes up the difference between the two positions.
I played both in HS (I know, I know), and always loved when my coach would put me at second, b/c it was a comparative breeze to third, where the balls arrived much faster, you had a much tougher throw, you had to deal with bunts, etc. And if the ball beats you at third, it’s much more likely to turn into an extra base hit than if it gets by you at second. Look at Edgardo Alfonzo – he was a good defensive third baseman, but a great defensive second baseman.
Also, Wright is 4 years younger than Utley. In summary, Utley’s a tool.
2009 Did Not Happen
it doesn't list 2nd tougher than 3rd
they have the same positional adjustment, and the same average offensive expectancies. Utley is just plain a better defender.

The tight race between Wright and Polanco is the front page story on mlb.com today
In fact, there’s an article about “campaign managers” and it’s a little disappointing that wrightttxgirlllx3 isn’t featured after all the work she’s been putting in!
