Mets Make Acquisition of the Century
If Michael Barrett doesn't get us to the World Series, I don't know what will. For those that don't remember, he was above average for 3 seasons (2004-2006) putting up 2.6, 3.1, and 2.7 WAR seasons.

that guy is awful
i guess we need catchers in the minors though.
stats, they are seriously never in Francoeur's favor
rather hope this isnt a sign of a thole trade to come
stats, they are seriously never in Francoeur's favor
Honestly
If Thole is the centerpiece of a Lee trade, that would be cause for celebration.

Yeah but that's not likely.
Most likely, he’ll be the #2 guy in the deal; something like FMart, Thole, Familia
Sound like he's more willing to trade Fernando than Mejia
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
If that were the deal
I’d have to think long and hard about it. Familia to me is too far off to be worth any mroe than one of the compensatory draft picks we’d get if Lee walks. Thole is a solid catching prospect, but certainly no future Piazza. FMart is, of course, the great unknown, on one hand the guy with the most upside but a guy who’s a big question mark.

the problem with trading thole
is there’s literally no other catching options, other than resigning the recently very cooled off Barajas, and even then he’ll need a really really good back up, Blanco’s pretty likely to retire, for his to get above average production from the position.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
This is true
I think Thole’s going to hit but the defense scares me a bit. I don’t love Barajas/Blanco as much as the MSM and Metsblog readers do but the fact is that they’ve played well offensively (to their expected level) and especially defensively and I think Thole may be too big of a downgrade on the defensive side that his limited bat won’t pick up the slack for. I like Thole and would like to see him become this team’s catcher of the future but if he’s is what’s holding up a deal for Lee, I think I’d have to pull the trigger and just pray that a new long term option a catcher presents itself either in the minors, free agency or through a trade.
Now if the Mets had taken Yasmani Grandal in the draft, that would’ve made this much easier.

Re. Thole
While he might be too big a downgrade right now because of his defense, next season or in 2012 when Barajas and Blanco are even older, and Thole has had more time to refine his defense, that won’t still be the case.
i hope barajas is gone by next year
unless, as gina suggests, blanco retires. then he can be backup to thole

cora for mauer
problem solved

It's a big bet for Omar
If the Mets trade Thole and FMart and fail to make the playoffs, I can’t imagine Omar stays as GM. And he has to fear the same.
At the same time
if he doesn’t make the trade and fails to make the playoffs, then what? I would think the only way Omar stays is if this team makes the playoffs.
I’m okay with Omar getting canned…it’s time for a smart GM to take over.

Or should've said
I would “hope” the only way Omar stays is if this team make the playoffs.

For us as Mets fans...definitely!

I would too
I like all three prospects but they each have some major flaws (Fernando is injuries/plate discipline, Thole is defense/lack of power and Familia is lack of control) and if you could turn that into a stud big league starter then I think you have to make that move, especially since you don’t give up any of the really important players (Niese, Pagan, Mejia etc).

from a mets perspective
or mariners?

You know what that means
We aren’t picking up Carlos Zambrano if he’s dumped.
Trying to believe is my full-time occupation.
I'm sure this signing means we won't be picking up AJ Pierzynski either
Not that the Chi Sox would deal him, but figured i’d point it out.

I'm morally certain we won't trade for a starter
if it means adding remotely significant salary for 2011 and beyond. No Oswalt, no Zambrano…
no zambrano for sure, you would hope they look at haren
morally certain?
stats, they are seriously never in Francoeur's favor
I think it is more for minor league depth
But theres always the possibility Thole is getting traded.
it would seem to have little correlation with thole
we aren’t going to carry another right handed catcher on the bigs even if we trade thole. like you said, minor league depth
stats, they are seriously never in Francoeur's favor
I wanted Michael Barrett

the scary thing
people on metsblog loving this and packing thole’s bags…

This just screams Thole being traded
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
it could also scream
that we have literally no catching depth, other than the thunder god who was so bad he was demoted.

Looks like he's a free agent now.
He was claimed by Washington at the end of ST but i guess he didn’t make the cut.

What about the other guy...
Shawn Riggans?
Wikipedia says he was released by the Mets in May
and is playing for the NJ Jackals of the Can-Am League.

If he's good enough for the Jackals
Although I couldn’t find him on the roster, Argenis Reyes is batting .272 for them.
Did their GM used to work for the Mets?
May you be locked in a battle of wits against Jerry Manuel.

I think we're forgetting about the real issue here.
What does this mean for the future of Omir Santos and his kickass design skills?
by dontstopbelieving on Jun 29, 2010 6:16 PM EDT reply actions
I would say thunder god could be involved in a deal instead of Thole
but that would probably only happen if Dayton Moore was the Mariners GM.
