Mets Designate Gary Matthews Jr. For Assignment, Recall Omir Santos

Why the fuck would the Mets call up a 3rd catcher?
Who’s the backup CF now?
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
Probably Tatis
Who also doubles as the 4th string catcher as well. You can never have too many shitty catchers.
Joke of an organization.

At least they cut GMJ
That’s one less issue for 2011

yes we would have had an extra spot
and mike nickeas could have filled that. Omir has been awful this year, this must be his end with the Mets – just come up to say goodbye
Okay. In that case, I bet Bajaras needs a day off
It (actually) makes sense, then. Bring up Omir for a few days to relieve an aching Barajas, send him down for Feliciano when ready.
Yeah that makes sense actually
But believe it when I see it.

Which I just found out he apparantly is.

blanco is hurt
Santos will be sent down and JF called up. I called it all last week.

This is a Friday-afternoon joke, right?
I havent clicked on any links, but this isn’t serious. It can’t be.

So how does this help?
If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
We have someone new to pick on?

Something can't be right
Either 1 of Barajas or Blanco is banged up or this is just some weird temporary move…. I mean it just doesn’t make enough sense, especially when J-Feliciano’s agent was telling that newspaper he was coming up for sure in the near future.
That's really the only way I'm okay with this move.
If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
This doesn't make sense didn't Thole have a concusion
Plus if I am feliciano I am pissed
Next move
Carter gets DFA for Robinson Cancel.

They might be waiting with Feliciano
for the American League games, because they won’t start Carter against a lefty, Tatis is in the doghouse, and there’s no one else on the roster who would pass the laugh test as a DH.
But why DFA GMJ then?
We don’t have a real backup OF on the roster right now
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ

I love how "Tatis is in the doghouse" is listed as a legitimate issue
And yet with Jerry Manuel no one here will think it’s outlandish.

why is tatis in the doghouse?

This is weird.

This is simple
Santos will go down tomorrow when Niece is activated, Jesus will be put on 40 man once GMJ is off of it. 42 guys on 40 man right now, including 2 60 day DLers in Escobar and Beltran. Feliciano will be with the team once GMJ clears waivers and is removed from 40 man.
Correct me if I’m wrong please.
Once a player is DFAd, he's off the 40-man
So, that’s the issue. They may have to clear 40 man space to let Beltran rehab, though. Not sure about that.
they already have Beltran on 60 day, doesn't count against 40 man roster
Santos is already on 40 man roster. Only logical idea I can come up with
he was just put on 60 day a couple weeks ago when they acquired justin turner (think that's his name)
it’s just a formality really, helps clear up 40 man roster space. but he can only be on 60 day DL for 60 days, unlike the 15 day DL where a player can be on that all season.
Again, I think I’m correct.
You aren't
He can be on the 60 day DL for any amount of time exceeding 60 days, but the minimum is 60.
Reyes, Thole, Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis, Martinez, Tejada...
by Stephen Schmidt on Jun 4, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions
But
I thought once you DFA someone he’s off the 40-man. So I don’t quite see where Santos fits in. Also, once Niese is activated presumably they’ll send down Valdez or Dessens (or, heck, Igarashi); they don’t need another pitcher on the roster.
by dontstopbelieving on Jun 4, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions
I thought so too but it doesn't make sense as to why santos is up.
but this is the Mets we’re talking about.
I thought dfa him
is taking him off the 40, which is why they go on waivers.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
He's off as soon as they DFA him
Reyes, Thole, Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis, Martinez, Tejada...
by Stephen Schmidt on Jun 4, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions
they won't send down valdez cause they'd have to return him to the mexican league
they won’t send down Iggy because they’re cheap and he’s making too much money. An apparently they’re afraid to expose Iggy to waivers.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
Finally
Drafting Omir Santos 1st in my keeper league is showing signs of paying off.
Hes probably only around for a day or so. Im assuming Tejada gets the call at 2nd? we hall an all home grown infield wow.
Oh man . . .
Please let this mean a temporary return of the Omir Santos t-shirt. I will not miss that opportunity a second time.

The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
But they have better catchers than Santos
Even with Thole hurt, there’s JR House or Nickeas.
Santos on roster
House not much of an upgrade. not sure why not Nickeas to get a taste
Someone else would have to be DFA'd in a few days to make room for Felicianoe then.
Omir is already on the 40, so he can just be sent beck down.
Reyes, Thole, Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis, Martinez, Tejada...

LOL, this team can never just do something right!
It has to follow it up with a crap decision like promoting Omir Santos, who has been abysmal this year btw. What does this mean for Feliciano? I guess this means, he’ll get called up, and they’ll send Carter down. Great. I hate this FO.
Relax, its because Blanco is banged up…. give it a couple days and I’m sure J-Feliciano will be on his way.
And I'm sure he'll be the one taking the now free 40 man spot
Reyes, Thole, Wright, Beltran, Bay, Davis, Martinez, Tejada...
by Stephen Schmidt on Jun 4, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions
If Blanco is banged up
Just DL him, so you don’t have to bring up Santos to replace an outfielder. It’s a waste of a roster spot for a few days.
If Blanco is on the DL
then you only have one catcher, Barajas, on the team.
No, I was saying DL Blanco and call up a catcher
but then you’d still be able to call up someone to replace Matthews. But, I guess if Blanco is going to be better in a couple days then whatever. I just hate carrying 3 catchers. If it can be avoided it should be avoided.
back in the day?
that was 5 years ago and he was very bad there
he's just a back up for a day or 2
You can get by with Bay as back-up cf better than you can get by with no back-up C. Blanco may be banged up but not need to be DL’d. This would make sense then as just a temporary move. Then down goes Omir and up comes Feliciano once Hank White is good to go.
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
that was a funny joke, now seriously what is going on
there is no way the Mets are stupid enough to call up a 3rd catcher
is Barajas nursing an injury. This can’t be happening…Now I am MAD!!!

Can't wait to hear what GMJ has to say
He’ll definitely blame his crappyness on the Mets not giving him a chance to play. Good riddance.
Rubin is also reporting this and that Tejada is on way for Castillo
problem is the better move would of been dl castillo and bring santos and Feliciano up
Tatis has played 2nd in the past if they needed a backup due to an injury
If we were going to bring up Tejada
We should have DFA’d Cora. Then this would have been a day for the ages.
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.
his option wouldn't vest then..
"I only wanted a few things out of life -- a wife, children, to play baseball and to hunt deer." - Turk Wendell
I'd rather have Bay be back-up cf
for a couple of days then have tatis be the starting 2b for a couple of days.
once again I'd like to pat myself on the back
I said that GMJs increased playing time was because he was being given a last opp to prove himself. Once he failed he would be cut.
Hooray me.
Carter is now the bullpen catcher

I'm glad that GMJ is gone,
I also hope this shirt returns as well:

If he is banged up
DL him. We should really have a backup CF. Or, you know, someone other than the 3 starters who actually is an outfielder. Yes Tatis and Carter can play there, but they are infielders
Yes.
To cover back-up catcher for a few days before he is sent back down to AA.

Fine
You know, given how much better a hitter Blanco is than our other potential Pinch Hitters, this might not be a terrible permanent swap.
If you use it to PH Blanco all the time (instead of the previously used Gary Matthews Jr.) and use Santos as the 3rd catcher (instead of Tatis), the bench does improve.
(Mind you, its playing with 24 players, but the Mets do that already by not using Blanco already)
I think it's pretty harmless for a short duration.
Santos maybe gets in one game before he is sent down; Tatis can actually be used as a pinch-hitter again (I think); Blanco can swing the bat in an emergency.
I’m just happy that GMJoke is out of our lives.

Omir will be sent back down to AA. Niese will be activated and Jesus will be brought up for back-up OF. The Mets actually made some sense today, especially if Tejada starts 99.9% of the time.

..except Santos can do better than a .190 avg
thus we’re a better team.
I’m all for the negativity when it makes sense, but in this case we’ve made an improvement.
074 in AA
But remember, Having him here means Blanco (if he’s able to swing) can now PH….which is a 300 hitter off the bench. (Lifetime hitter of .229, which is still better than GM Jr.)
I assume Blanco’s being dinged up makes more sense to preventing him from catching rather than pinch hitting.
You do manage to reopen all those scents though

hmm.. interesting. I’m neither enthused or overly concerned. I’ll wait and see how that one goes
santos will be with the team for a couple days at most
JF is coming up soon
It's obvious
Omir got that short swing off the bench, so is a better pinch hitter
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
I can't wait till Omir pinch hits for Barajas in the 9th
or when he’s used in a double switch, ha ha.
I think this was really done so Santos could retire as a Met, hopefully on Sunday. The Blanco injury is just a smoke screen.
