GMJR. DFA'd. And then there were none.
Finally!
So to recap, this is the third player to get DFA'd that just about everyone outside of Omar and Jerry knew should be cut before the season even began.
First, Mike Jacobs gets the 1B job despite being outplayed by Chris Carter. So, he is the opening day clean up hitter, and he goes and hits like Jacobs always has, except with less power. Manages 1 HR and 2 rbis in about 8 games or so, while striking out all over the place. Though it felt like ages, it was a mercifully short stint in relation to GMJr.
Second, Franky Cats gets demoted as it appears he's lost all baseball related skills, except the one that allows him to ground out to second base. Years ago he was a solid pro, and by all appearances, a good guy. It's kind of a sad way for a local guy to go out, but this is a harsh game at times.
And finally, the unholy triumvirate is eradicated today with the demotion of Gary Matthews Jr., who was easily one of the worst players in MLB this year. To his credit, he at least seemed like an ok guy and didn't cause too much distraction. However, in 65 plate appearances this year (many in big situations), Matthews came to bat with 50 total men on base. He drove in 1. That's right, 1 out of 50. His triple slash like reads like Mapquest directions for interstate travel, and he struck out 24 times while OPSing .507.
Lets look at the combined contributions of these 3 guys:
107 ABs, 20 hits, 4 2bs, 1 HR, 4 rbis. They did at least manage 10 walks! Shame on the pitchers that allowed these guys a free base.
Adding Alex Cora's 83 at bats and .552 OPS to this total makes this a lot more depressing, so I won't go there. This is just a shocking lack of production from a bench. These guys combined have easily cost the Mets a game or 3 already, and who knows, if they are fighting for a WC spot in Sept. that looms large. I do realize that's highly unlikely, but the fact is that none of these guys should have been on the team, and we all knew it before a game was played. How do a GM and major league manager both not know it? What did they see in these guys? They didn't play well in Spring, they didn't play well over the last several years. It's an inexcusable error of roster management, and they should both be fired on these decisions alone. That is all, now lets all enjoy the Omir Santos era, pt. 2.

True, but I was focusing on the 3 position players
that shouldn’t have been on the team in the first place. I’ve lost all hope that the Mets will DFA Ollie, they just don’t understand sunk cost.
Yes, but do they understand suck cost?
If so, there’s still hope they’ll get Ollie off the roster.
no no no
we need ollie on the roster to force them to send down Meija.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
Stay strong Ollie!
Fight the good fight and stay in the majors.
Of course, knowing our luck, Ollie will fuck us one last time and agree to go down, keeping Mejia on the roster.

well really
he should be DFA’d and Mejia should go down for Acosta and Parnell
Yeah, that way would work best for all
If Meijia goes down instead of Ollie, we’re still left with a shortened pen. Swapping Parnell and Acosta for Perez and Meijia would be a win win.
yeah but I forgot about Niese
but I think I am ready to give up on Nieve for him
i thought you said they won't do this, that ollie belongs on the DL

According to this poem:
Ten crappy Mets’ players went out with their pine;
Jacobs couldn’t hit or walk, and then there were nine.
Nine crappy Mets’ players stepped up to the plate;
Gary Matthews Jr. struck out (a lot) and then there were eight.
Eight crappy Mets’ players made the team, in the NL, ranked eleven;
Castillo came up gimpy and then there were seven.
Seven crappy Mets’ players can’t throw hard passed the other team’s sticks;
John Maine blamed a tired arm, and then there were six.
Says there are 6 players on the team who should be left. We still have Cora, Frenchy, Ollie, Nieve, Dessens, and Mejia (who shouldn’t be on the team for another obvious reason) are on the roster.

well...so far so good for dessens
but I am no fool who believes that will continue. Cora sometimes has big hits, but I agree he is not very useful
for some reason this gets me in the mood to read

I was actually thinking of Agatha Christie's
And Then There Were None, since that was the title of the post.
They're the same book
It’s been published under both titles.

Rec'd
But #7 should be ‘past’, not passed. John Maine ain’t passing anything this season.

frenchy
isn’t all THAT crappy. He shoudn’t be a regular, but as a platoon bat against lefties he’s pretty good. His career wRC+ against lefties is 115 and 131 this year. Pagan is like 77 against lefties. He isn’t as good a fielder, but he’s only been slightly below average the last few years per UZR.
Just a slight quibble. Yeah, the rest shouldn’t be around, and if they insist on Mejia being around, he should get higher leverage usage.
Who?

its like a possibly promising bat who can play 1B and LF acceptably
for a super streaky bat with a good defensive rep, who is too aggressive in the field (trying to show off his arm) and aggressive doesn’t do justice to his approach at the plate.
We're trying to have serious baseball discussion here.

Now that GMJ gone, I feel kinda empty.
Its like, hoping that management does the right thing was the only thing that I could hope for- winning, playoffs, all that’s out of the question. Now that the unholy triumvirate is gone, now what? Perez?

why are the playoffs out of the question?
no one is running away, unless you believe in the last ten games for the atlanta cowards, and the starting 5 pitchers appear good enough to last until we can trade for an upgrade, and some of the hitters are remembering how to hit, and the defense is the best its been in years
Cats should have been dumped earlier then he was
but it wasnt the end of the world giving him a shot. He plays a bunch of positions and has shown ability to pinch hit not too long ago.
But just like Omar to take a semi-excusable move, and make it face palm worthy by delaying what everyone else sees.
I am a fan of both the mets and knicks... so just kill me now.
praise the lord
F this team’s management.
We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

THIS POST
I know this is an old post, but it is one of the all time best ever, content & subject (the poem was stirring- sorry, getting emotional here). How about Cora & Tatis going next?
Cora yes,
but Tatis is an ideal bench player.
