Video Of The Daniel Murphy Take-Out Slide

Here is footage of the slide at second base by Leonard Davis which likely ended Daniel Murphy's season. Video quality is on par with that of a surveillance camera, and appears to be pulled from the SNY original teevee program "Daily News Live":

Star-divide

It looks pretty dirty to me, regardless if Murphy wasn't positioned correctly to turn the double play. However, if you were firmly against trying Murph at second base from the get-go, I'm sure you will claim it's a clean play and that his inexperience at the position is the primary reason for the injury. It probably would have been wise to ease him into second base but it's hard to say that this wasn't a dirty slide. Poor Murphy.

Ah he should have given me a sign

I just felt nauseous. Maybe that was the sign. Hmmm.

He gave you a sign

Ask somebody in the Philadelphia bullpen, they might’ve picked it up.

Isn't it ironic that

Murph got hurt and Jesus was promoted?

I might be mistaken

Of course it's Murphy's fault.

Doesn’t he know that when a player slides, the standard thing to do is a Roundhouse Kick?

I don't know what being "eased into" second base means

I am not blaming Murph at all here, but it’s not like this is the first time a baserunner ever tried to do that. It’s just unfortunate that it happened so quickly.

I meant the general idea

of a runner trying to take out the second baseman. Again, I’m not blaming Murph.

I've seen it as retaliation after another takeout caused an injury.

I don’t recall when, but I have this vague recollection of a barrel roll takeout slide in retaliation for an earlier conventional (and perhaps out-of-the-baseline) takeout that injured an infielder. I think the second infielder saw if coming and wasn’t (badly) hurt.. Perhaps someone else here can recall the specifics (assuming I am not dreaming it up).

I don't get it.

I’ve been hearing for days how dirty this slide was, and how the runner was so far out of the baseline that he couldn’t have reached 2nd base unless he had go-go-gadget arms. Now I see video, and the runner slides directly over the base to get to Murphy? Sure, it was a hard slide, but Murphy just stood there. Am I really the only one who doesn’t think the runner deserves to be shot?

And for the record, I have completely been in the “Murphy should play second” camp for several years now. He doesn’t hit well enough to have value anywhere else. If he can’t handle 2B, then he can go play for Newark.

He never left the baseline

but that slide is dirty as hell. It’s an extremely late slide and as others have pointed out that roll across Murphy’s legs is what tears it. That’s way beyond any takeout slide, that is a dirty play. No player should ever slide like that. It’s not just cause of what it did to Murphy, I’d be sickened if one of the Mets did it too.

You slide feet-first, not left-shin-first

He led with his shin, hit the bag & tumbled over into Murph’s legs. Obviously the footage isn’t the clearest but that’s just not the kind of slide anybody who knows anything about sliding would make; either he stumbled at some point & that was the best off-balance slide he could pull off, or he was gunning for Murph’s knees.

Personally, I think he was just following orders; not to take him out for the season, of course, but it’s a double play ball (late in the game, no less) to a very inexperienced second baseman who’s already got knee issues. Who could blame the opposing manager for drilling into his players’ heads “Get into Murph at second, any way you can, he’s green”?

future 2nd baseman?

i wouldnt mind… I hope he can come back from the injury…

lets give up another walkoff...

by boomdazzle on Jun 7, 2010 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

I dunno

I’ve watched that video 10 times now and from what I can see (the poor quality makes it tough to tell) but, while the slide was a little late, Murphy seemed very slow on the transfer of the ball from glove to hand and was still holding it when Davis began his late slide. To me, Murphy also seemed slow-footed there at 2B and didn’t pivot quickly. It’s not like Davis barreled into Murph AFTER he threw the ball. It was a bang-bang play from what I can tell.

I will say that I reserve the right to change my opinion after seeing a better quality video of it.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
