Mets Select RHP Matt Harvey, Or Matt Harvery, Or Someone

Yep, you know it's going badly when you can't even spell your first round pick's name properly in the press release you send around to subscribers of the team's newsletter.

well what is the deal with Matt Harvery?

maybe he has a secondary pitch and therefore we should draft him instead.

by Endys Game on Jun 7, 2010 11:20 PM EDT reply actions

so, um, is this a good pick?

It’s so hard to tell sometimes with baseball picks. Right now, all I know is that Bryce Harper = win for Washington, and Delino DeShields Jr. = Astros move ahead of Royals as biggest joke franchise in baseball.

so we screwed up again?

And I thought there’d be a benefit to the abortion that was last season in that we’d be able to draft a future cornerstone.

Possibly

But I guess it’s not too late to resolve this particular issue. He lost his breaking pitch ability, but I think it could be re-retrieved. I say he is a 2014 call-up, with what I see here – that might be a problem.

A college pitcher not being up till 2014

is a problem in itself

I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

Exactly

Setting my expectations in line has been a painful process, in the course of recent years.

I did sort of mean 2014 as a full-time player, but I expect a debut sometime in 2013.

Huge problem

Eddie Kunz and Bobby Parnell were up before that and I think you would have a higher expectation for the 7th overall pick.

This is a real un-Mets like pick…total boom or bust. I don’t think there will be any in between with him. It all stems on his breaking pitches and he will need development. That scares me with this organization.

We can only hope for the best

Not necessarily

He completely crapped out his sophomore year of college. There’s a chance the kid never sees the majors.

His line and body typy appear to be very similar

to Ron Darling, and is also a durable arm. If he turns out to me similar to Darling’s success for the Mets, it will be a great pick.

17-year-old that was projected to go the Astros but not that early.

I read one scout who projected him to have a Devon White ceiling, so maybe I guess they could have done better with the 8th pick.

I was about to say that Devon White was a pretty good hitter

but then I checked out BB-Ref and realized I was thinking of Rondell White. Ouch…Devon White ceiling at #8? As incompetent as the Mets are, they aren’t even the most incompetent 1962 expansion team, which is nice, I guess…

by cjmulrain on Jun 8, 2010 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Devon White was worth a lot in the field, apparently.

So I guess Delino DeShields, Jr. has a ceiling of a good-field, average hit guy. Then again, the kid is 17, and it’s the baseball draft so who really knows?

"He's definitely mixing it into his repertoire. That's French for 'repertoire' " - Keith Hernandez

by Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright on Jun 8, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

If you get

Devon White with pick #8, you’re ecstatic. But that said, remember: Devon White didn’t reach his ceiling, so I think it’s reasonable to say that DeShields could be a White-like player but still better.

Really comes down to pitch recognition and discipline. Give those things to White, who played 17 years, hit 200+ homers, and was the premier defender of his era, and he’s a near Hall of Famer.

by Alex Nelson on Jun 8, 2010 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I'll continue to defer to the "he's 17 and the draft is a crapshoot" philosophy.

He might turn out to be a pretty good piece, he might not. If nothing else, it will be pretty fun to see Delino Jr. get some playing time in person with the ValleyCats in the NYPL if he ends up signing.

The pick really doesn't suck

He’s got a hell of a sinker and a big time arm. There’s a lot of upside here. If he works out, he’ll be great. I just don’t take mechanical alterations lightly, and I think he’s gonna need a couple.

by Alex Nelson on Jun 7, 2010 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Pelfrey had far greater success in college and was quite a bit more refined

Harvey needs a lot more work and with that comes a far greater risk. If he reaches his ceiling, perhaps he could be Big Pelf-esque.

Long way off though.

We had an AA scouting report

that was negative, and given Omar’s track record, we’re at about “fool me 950 times”, and I think that’s got to be “shame on me”, by now. So, the desire to leaf through the suitcase full of cash for monopoly money and terrible metaphors is in full effect.

THAT said, college pitcher with a good frame (or, as John Hart would say, “GREAT body,”) and a heavy fastball isn’t as much of a risk as some of the younger guys with screwy mechanics, and as Gina points out, with the fastball, the “floor” could still be a good bullpen arm.

Great pick, imo

In a really weak draft, I like the idea of going with the guy with the biggest potential.

I think you’ve got the upside of an elite prep pitcher (which he was in 07) in a guy who’s been successful at the highest level of college baseball.

He has no leverage to get anything close to that.

you should be able to include draft picks in trades and trade up in the draft.

no

it wouldn’t be smart. Too many small market teams would sell their picks to big market ones. The Red Sox and Yankees would probably buy into the top ten every year.

by Gina on Jun 8, 2010 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions

You don't see that happening in other sports

now granted they all have some form of salary cap, but there would be no reason to expect it to happen in baseball if it didn’t anywhere else.

But what you do see in baseball that you don't see in football or basketball

Is teams intentionally taking lesser players so they don’t have to pay them as much.

by Evan_S on Jun 8, 2010 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

but isn't this actually an additional argument for trading picks?

If a team A prefers to take a lesser player, it loses some kind of value that could be traded away. Hence, team A would be better off having a chance to trade its (high) draft pick.

by alexSVK on Jun 8, 2010 2:40 AM EDT up reply actions

You could get around that

by having an independent panel of experts rank the players, and slot payments be set in stone. That would never happen though.

by deadspy3 on Jun 8, 2010 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

the other sports have salary floors

the teams have to spend the money somewhere, they might as well spend it on picks MLB doesn’t that. And actually you see NBA teams selling picks all the time. Phoenix has sold like 4-5 straight first round picks because they couldn’t afford them. And with no cap there’s a much bigger financial disparity in MLB. Portland’s billionaire owner has bought into the lottery multiple times the last few years and Atlanta is expected to try and sell their first round pick this year.

And even some NFL teams have done similar things, avoiding high cost positions near the top of the draft. The Rooney’s have said multiple times if they get another top ten pick they’ll do everything they can to trade out of it to avoid the cost.

And like Evan_S said teams already take lesser players so they don’t have to pay them, is it really

I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.

by Gina on Jun 8, 2010 2:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess I forgot about how disingenuous most NBA owners are.

But there’s a simple fix. The NHL has a clause in the CBA that states something like the money exchanging hands has to be “equal” – equal being open to interpretation buy the Commissioner and League Offices. So in the case of Team A selling its top-10 pick to Team B for cash, the Commissioner/League Offices will step in and veto it. The clause does not get in the way of legitimate trades however (i.e. Team B trading this year’s and next’s 1st round picks for Team A’s superstar who’s on the last year of his contract).

Save Jenrry Mejia!

by Ogre39666 on Jun 8, 2010 5:25 AM EDT up reply actions

In theory that would help the smaller teams

Instead of passing on expensive taltent and letting it drop to the Yankees and Sox, they could force them to give up additional picks to get the same players they are getting anyway.

looked like a decent pick to me but the baseball draft is such a non science

Hey the guy was wanted out of high school but went to college instead and still had a very good stats.

I like that he has already grown into his man body and pitched some innings at a highe rlevel

I like getting a college arm instead, while some want high school arms so that they can mold them into what they want. I want guys who have learned different things from different guys. I do not want a team of clones coached by the same exact minor leagie coaches

by Rickfansince76 on Jun 8, 2010 6:51 AM EDT reply actions

Looks like a reach

The Mets selected RHP Matt Harvey with the seventh pick in the first round of the 2010 MLB draft. Most projections had him ranked around the 20th best player in the draft. But a lot of the baseball draft is based not only on skill but the ability to sign the player. Harvey went to high school in Groton, CT and attended the University of North Carolina.

by Joshuah on Jun 8, 2010 7:50 AM EDT reply actions

Keith Law had him 20th too

Harvey has bounced back from two awful years in college to reestablish himself as a prospect for this year’s draft, with a significant and unexpected increase in velocity this spring and an improved delivery. He’s touched 97 in several starts and will hold 95-96 for 30-40 pitches at the start of a game, then working at 91-94 through the 100 pitch mark.

His best offspeed pitch is a 79-84 mph changeup with some downward fade, but his curveball, his best offspeed pitch in high school, is below average now and very inconsistent. Harvey drives his fastball down in the zone, getting groundballs at an impressive rate, but overall doesn’t command the ball, and in many ways he’s the same pitcher he was the last two years, but with more velocity. His arm is looser and much cleaner in the back than it had been prior to this year, although he still lands awkwardly and stiffly and the way he drifts off the rubber isn’t helping him land consistently.

Ultimately, his best role may be in the pen, where he won’t have to deal with losing velocity (and could easily sit 95-97), he can work with just two pitches, and the lack of command could be mitigated by the quality of his stuff. If he’s drafted as a starter, some player development staff will have a fair amount of work to do to get him to reach his potential in that role.

I thought they were going to get a better logo for Citi Field after it was mocked so badly. It looks like a Dominio’s Pizza logo.

by Mark D on Jun 8, 2010 9:01 AM EDT reply actions

I look at Harvey and see a high floor/high ceiling prospect

If he maintains his fastball, he’s at least a major leaguer. Beyond his fastball he has the build and fastball sink of an innings eater and the potential for a 3 or 4 pitch arsenal.

I like this guy. He’s a horse with a solid FB and has shown he can make adjustments. This draft was so weak, so grabbing a possible frontline starter who could be MLB ready by 2012 wasn’t a bad strategy.

Per the NYD, Harvey on the pitches:

Here’s what Harvey himself had to say about it:

"It was a period in our season where we needed some big wins. Playing on the road at Clemson is a tough place to play. As the Friday night starter (college term for ace), I was trying to do everything I could to win. My whole body felt good and all that credit goes to the coaching staff. I couldn’t have done it without them."

Harvey added, "At the beginning of the game, I felt kind of sick, I didn’t feel all that great. Third or fourth inning, once I got my legs under me, I felt better. Toward the seventh or eighth inning, that was the best I felt all night. Once I struck out the side in the eighth, it was tough to not want to go out to the ninth. It was a big game and I wanted to go out and finish it."
