Amateur Draft Day 2 Open Thread
With their first-round selection last night, the Mets took UNC sinkerballer Matt Harvey, a kid with high upside but a little more rawness than you typically see in a college pitcher.
I'll try and keep up with the selections as they come off the board and add them to the chart below, but the picks do move very fast. After picking prep outfielder Josh Sale last night, I'll also continue making my selections in my shadow draft for at least a few more rounds in the comments below.
| # | Player | Pos | School |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Matt Harvey | RHP | North Carolina |
| 3 | Blake Forsythe | C | Tennessee |
| 4 | Cory Vaughn | OF | San Diego State |
| 5 | Matt den Dekker | OF | Florida |
| 6 | Greg Peavey | RHP | Oregon State |
| 7 | Jeff Walters | RHP | Georgia |
| 8 | Kenny McDowall | RHP | College of Southern Nevada |
| 9 | Jake deGrom | RHP/SS | Stetson University |
| 10 | Akeel Morris | RHP | Charlotte Amelie HS (VI) |
| 11 | Adam Kolarek | LHP | Maryland |
| 12 | Bret Mitchell | RHP | Minnesota State-Mankato |
| 13 | Brian Harrison | 3B | Furman |
| 14 | J.B. Brown | 2B | U Pacific |
| 15 | Tillman Pugh | OF | Sonoma State |
| 16 | Ryan Fraser | RHP | Memphis |
| 17 | Chad Sheppard | RHP | Northwestern State |
| 18 | A.J. Pinera | RHP | U Tampa |
| 19 | Jonathan Kountis | RHP | Embry-Riddle |
| 20 | Lucas Stewart | 1B | Alabama-Birmingham |
| 21 | Dabias Johnson | 2B | Cook HS (GA) |
| 22 | Brandon Brown | SS | South Alabama |
| 23 | Drew Martinez | OF | Memphis |
| 24 | Erik Goeddel | RHP | UCLA |
| 25 | Peter Birdwell | RHP | Vanguard |
| 26 | Jet Butler | SS | Mississippi State |
| 27 | Michael Weldon | RHP | Wayland Baptist |
| 28 | Jeremy Gould | LHP | Duke |
| 29 | Hamilton Bennett | LHP | Tennessee Wesleyan |
| 30 | Josh Edgin | LHP | Francis Marion |
And that does it for us. I'll have the highlights up either later tonight or early tomorrow morning. Quick gut reactions: that's a lot of college players, and it's a lot of pitchers.

First Pick of Round 2
Nats pick Sammy Solis to open up the round. Mets will pick in about a half hour or so.
Stetson Allie
goes second, so the Pirates get the two biggest arms in the draft. Everyone thought they’d go conservative.
Allie
Is also a very boom or bust guy. The guy literally couldn’t get the ball anywhere near the strike zone until 2 months ago.
Any thoughts on Robbie Aviles?
I know he just went down with the elbow injury, but is he a guy worth taking a chance on and waiting for? Seems like he could be a decent gamble later on for a team without a lot of high picks, but I have no clue.
are there any signability guys who have fallen
or other somewhat high reward guys who might be available?
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
Why wouldnt they take him?
Overslot guy?

yeah I should say guys who we're likely to target
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
I've read that this is a weak draft class...what round would we starts seeing the talent level drop?
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
Sorry that was kind of a joke
When people say that the draft is weak, they mean that the talent in the opening couple rounds are weak. By round four or five, it’s about as strong as any other draft.
This is really my 1st time following the MLB draft

I like your term "shadow draft"

"Checkmate"

Man: Because the king is always in jeopardy.
King: Yes, but it’s only a game.
Man: (suspiciously) Yes, of course. Only a game.
Yes, there is a blog post for these. Amazing.

2009 Did Not Happen
really?
that’s sarcasm, right?
My biggest memory of Rojas is the grand slam to Paul O’Neill in the first ever regular season Subway Series game @ Shea
2009 Did Not Happen
Yeah
I don’t have any fond memories of Mel Rojas. He couldn’t even leave town properly: they had to bring in Bobby Bonilla to get rid of him, and they’re still paying Bonilla’s contract (or more precisely just resumed paying it).
Forsythe
is a talented receiver, plus arm, has a long swing, strikes out a lot but is very patient. Doesn’t have much power, so he’s a good-throwing catcher who might not make enough contact.
yeah keith law apparently says he's adam dunn at the plate
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
I read "talented receiver" as "talented reliever"
And about shit my pants.
sorry didn't hit .433
I think I was looking at his cumulative OBP the last two years, my bad.
He entered the season projected to be a first rounder
He has a good approach at the plate, was 2nd in the SEC in OBP last year. Maybe could have waited, but I like the addition.

so much for aj cole
wasn’t he one of their round 1 targets? their refusal to go overslot really is infuriating. i’m not going to pretend to know a lot about the guy, but if he was the best available talent they should have taken him.

oh i totally understand that aspect of it
the kid is a h.s. arm and could just opt for college if he doesn’t get what he wants. i guess i was just hoping they’d take a chance. guess things looked real bad.

Neither the Yankees or Red Sox took Cole so what does that say?
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
Is it a pretty safe bet the Mets will go conservative the rest of draft?
Go overslot with the high-profile first-round pick so they can tell people like Francesa they’re not cheap when it comes to the draft, but quietly make up that money on the back end?
A GINGER!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Don’t the front office know gingers have no souls?
Aw, sick! Gross! Ginger kids are born with a disease, which causes very light skin, red hair and freckles. This disease is called “Gingervitis”. Kids who have Gingervitis cannot be cured.

For what it's worth
Rob Brantly who the Tigers took is who the Mets should have taken instead of Forsythe.
With Forsythe
we will have a Dynasty. (Seriously, I hope this guy was not named “Blake” after John Forsythe’s character on Dynasty. Not that I’ve ever seen Dynasty. It’s Wikipedia. That and my deluxe DVD set — the one I watch, not the one I left in shrinkwrap for posterity.)
Forgot!
My pick was Aaron Shipman in the third round, who went to the Athletics a few picks later. Very toolsy and athletic, but he’s very raw. Wasn’t anybody else I loved after a run on my favorites, but he has the chance to be something special. And he’s expected to sign.
He’s not my usual pick type of pick (or the Mets’) but it’s nice to get some high-upside talent every once and while.
Mets select
Greg Vaughan’s son in the fourth. Very toolsy, looks great in batting practice but has no idea how to play baseball.
that's promising?

the second toolsy guy is a college guy? I was hoping he was a prep bat. A college player with no idea how to play baseball isn’t quite as inspiring.
Lol but it seems exactly like something that would follow mets logic.
toolsy guys have high upside
college guys have lower risks
college toosly guys= best way to go
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
Yeah
I really don’t like toolsy college guys with performance issues, just as I really like polished high schoolers. The Mets have always liked them (and sometimes you can get a bargain with easily correctable issues, but they are rare).

Absolutely love Garin Cecchini. First-round talent for me with signability doubts so I steered clear.
And the Yankees
take a guy I was hoping would be there at five in Mason Williams. Tiny little guy who draws comparisons to Doug Glanville.
What is the report with Vaughn?
Is he any good?
----Warner----

by Scent of a Woman on Jun 8, 2010 1:51 PM EDT reply actions
Toolsy player
Lots of speed and strength, but the performance hasn’t been there, and he’s struck out a ton in college.
All I could find.
Cory Vaughn is what we call a "gunshot guy." A gunshot guy is a hitter whose wood bat makes a sound like a gunshot when he makes solid contact, as opposed to the wet newspaper sound. Show up for BP or early work and you’ll hear it. I had the park to myself. The scouts were sleeping it off.
Vaughn, the son of the Greg Vaughn, has a leaner and more athletic body than his father had when he first came to the major leagues. Cory Vaughn hits from a wide stance and has a short trigger. He has fast hands and keeps the firm front side even when he is fooled. He’s going to have the power to play a corner and I think he’s going to be athletic enough to steal some bases if he wants to. He’s a first-round talent in 2010. His numbers weren’t much to look at on the Cape, but I’m not scouting results. You can’t hide the power and you can’t hide this guy’s body and athleticism. If I were looking for a comparison at this stage, Matt Kemp might work.

Is this the mets new MO?
After Ike Davis’s success are they trying to only draft relatives of former major leaguers?
I read somewhere that Terrasas likes to pick guys with solid defensive skills.
In lobby campaign for Chris Carter.
Well,
most people do, but I get your point. By definition, most of those guys are going to be college players, too.
Vaughn hit .378, slugged .606
but not a lot of walks and 55 Ks in only 188 abs this year.
The big names left
Are Austin Wilson, Jesse Hahn. Wilson has signability issues and Hahn might have an injury issue.
So are any of the last three players we drafted potential impact guys?
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
I think
they can be. I don’t like their chances though. den Dekker is strong and fast. But he was very disappointing in college, and I’ve never liked his swing.
I know that college offensive stats are pretty ridiculous
but why is a .368/.584/1.034 Ops and 23 sbs considered really disappointing in a good conference like the SEC? What was wrong with him, other than swing?
Well
1. There are a lot of guys who do that. 2. He’s a senior, he’s a year older than everybody, and he’s never been near that good. And 3. You have to look at the numbers that are the strongest indicators of how he’ll perform: a 46/26 K/BB ratio is not good.
but, I mean
if a prospect put up that kind of line in A+, he’d be an instant top-5 prospect, and people would just say he needs to work on his plate discipline. From everything I’ve heard, the NCAA (especially in a strong conference like the SEC) is at a level somewhere around AA. The metal bats obviously inflate the offensive numbers, but that still looks like someone who has the potential to be a decent hitter
2009 Did Not Happen
NCAA
is nowhere near Double-A. Anybody who says that is lying through their teeth. It’s closest to the NY-Penn league, which is composed mostly of the more advanced recent draftees. And nobody hits in the NY-Penn league like they do in college.
those aren't dan dekkers numbers are they?
cause those aren’t the numbers im looking at at all.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
I was off on the avg.
It’s .361, not .368, and the OPS is 1.017. But it’s close: http://www.gatorzone.com/baseball/stats.php#TEAM.MLB
Josh Slaats
goes to the Rockies, and he was my choice in the Shadow. Big kid with a great slider, the arm angle might be better for relief, but he really blossomed this year after a great performance on the Cape.

I think the mets strategy is pretty obvious
2008 they took a bunch of college players, mostly bats, and fans complained about sticking to slot and not going for upside
so 2009 they take a bunch of high school pitchers that are going to demand overslot money then get killed by fans for not signing them
so now they’re going back to the college players but making sure they can sign them all
it’s akin to omar’s team building, focus on fixing the thing most recently complained about

I’m a little familiar with. He’s got a starter’s build and a closer’s mentality, with above average left-handed velocity and poor secondary offerings.
Mo Vaughn in his current state would take all the pitchers we drafted today deep

it’s hilarious how this thread descends into loopiness with each mets pick.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
sheesh between 2007, last year and this year
you’d think our system would be bursting with pitching talent
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
yeah thats kind of my point
but you’d think that when you draft that many pitchers you’d accidentally get some talented ones.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
they probably figure at the rate Jerrys going
we’ll need a new crop of bp arms by august
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
Fraser
Dunno anything about him other than he seems to have some control issues. Don’t even know what he throws.
God this is the anti-NFL draft
The NFL draft is so full of optimism for the fans.
This is some of the most depressing Mets related stuff I have read this year. Gaaaah!
not the steelers drafts
they can’t go 2 rounds without picking a linebacker.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
though I will say they almost always hit on their first 2 rounds
before they devolve into picking names out of a hat.
the mets draft like rod thorn. which is annoying because omar is such a good scout you’d at least think we could hit on the draft.

And if we take all the RHPs
Nobody else will get any. duh!
You really can't grade an MLB draft for a few years
but still, it doesn’t seem like the Mets are taking anyone with much upside at all. Guys with 7+ ERA’s in college probably aren’t going to turn into very useful major league pitchers…
2009 Did Not Happen
Jerry Reese woulda found more baseball players
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
No, he would've tried to find guys who do backflips
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
how so?
he’s an athletic beast with little in the way of pass rushing moves, and really little football playing experience in general, drafted predominately because of his measurable in hopes of being a premier pass rusher.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
JPP is known for his hard work while Gholston never had that reputation
The qualities are similar but the work ethic will make the difference.
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
And I can't find any recent report questioning his work ethic
all of them say the exact opposite.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
Check the post stories on him as a1st year pro
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
Not really disagreeing
But supposedly effort is not an issue with JJP< I don’t think the same can be said about Gohlston.
That would be putting it lightly
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
Why? You wanted a LB or you don't like "athletic/upside" types
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
We didn't need another DE
Scouts said he was a boom or bust player, and he only played one year at college
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
We didnt need a DE but Reese believes in taking the best player
regardless of position. The thing is that DE is so deep that if JPP booms then we are amazing on the line, if he busts then hey he’s the 4th DE, no biggie right?
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
Bulaga and Iupati would've been much better choices
and would’ve actually filled a need
I understand he got fudged over a little after the Raiders took McClain, but still… JPP was a bad pick
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
i didn't get how bulaga fell so far
the steelers have desperately needed a left tackle for years and yet they took a center they apparently didn’t even want over him.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
the problem
is that JPP wasn’t the best player available. He wasn’t even really close to the best player available.
Maybe, just maybe, he was the best athlete available, but then, the athleticism that he has doesn’t necessarily translate to being a good defensive end (read what I posted below, there’s a whole statistical breakdown of it).
JPP could end up being a great defensive end, but the historical trends are extremely lined up against it, and when you’re picking in the top half of the draft, taking a risk like that at a position of strength is negligence. And I love Jerry Reese.
2009 Did Not Happen
I'm not gonna disagree with your opinion but Jerry Reese has
a pretty good track record. If JPP turns into an all pro then Reese was right to draft him
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
agreed
and I want to give Reese the benefit of the doubt. I love what he did in the following rounds, I am just really pessimistic about JPP. Even if I’m right and JPP busts, it doesn’t make Reese a bad GM – even the best have their misses occasionally, the pick just really disappointed me.
2009 Did Not Happen
Can't fault you for being disappointed
we just gotta wait and see. I just have a feeling that JPP is going to be good
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
I think Jerry R could draft football players
and have a better draft

the mets seem convinced they can fix everyone
they do the same thing with relievers and starters with “stuff” but no control or real pitchability.
I wonder if Carl Everett believes Jamie Moyer exists.
Maybe Mets will draft me
I have some “stuff” that I spilled on myself at lunch
I am
surprised Chad Sheppard was still here, and I’m guessing people have the feeling he’s going back to school. He’s got a low-90s sinker and a slider which can look soft at times. A reliever with a starter’s body. Very good value here.
