Wallyball = Jerryball?
Keith Law watched the Brooklyn Cyclones face the Lowell Spinners yesterday and was tweeting about it, as Alex noted earlier today. In addition to commenting on Cory Vaughn and Darrell Ceciliani, Law also relayed this bit of Wally Backman in-game strategy:
I have little doubt that Backman can be an asset in player development. That seems to be his forte. But please, keep him away from the position of Mets big league manager.

what's the evidence he can be an asset in player development?
genuinely curious, not antagonizing. I usually avoid reading about Backman and am wondering where this consensus comes from.
His style was wild.

Dammit, Cannonglaser.
Didn’t you see that one time where he went totally ballistic? He’s the perfect manager! He’s just what the Mets need!

Kevin interviewed Wally during a Cyclones game a few weeks ago
and Wally talked all about moving the runner over and laying down the bunt. I threw up a little in my mouth.
I'm not asking for a perfect manager, just one
that gets the basics right. You know, like keeping the guys who can’t get on base at a .300 clip out of the top half of the lineup. Or one who can figure out an OF platoon without the input of the entire state of New York. Or who believes in, you know, stats.
bunting is dreadfully boring and often counterproductive
but with the mets lineup, when in tact, there arent many people or situations you actually want to bunt (except our 2B) and so i dont think he would act like that with us. he may like the play, but he is not stupid like jerry and apt to use it with first and second, no out and the best chance of getting a hit up at the plate and a guy who has almost never bunted, aka thole with frenchy behind him. i think he would stress moving a runner from second to third with a groundout at the very least and such, and i would have loved to see how he reacted to that scott rolen HBP BS a week back.

that freaking play
against ATL had me going nuts. I couldnt believe he had Thole bunting there when it was obvious we weren’t gonna have and didnt have many good scoring opportunities.

The actual act of having the 6th hitter bunt
And in the 4th inning is criminal. But maybe he realizes winning isn’t important at this level and that every player needs to be prepared for any situation the manager asks of him?
Trying desperately to find a silver lining.

But but but
Wally bring a new level of Gangsta and grission to the big club!
I hate Philadelphia so much.
i would still rather him to jerryball

I assumed that most folks around here don't want him managing the Mets.
I mean, he puts on a show but I have long assumed that he’s really no more than a sideshow clown.

Disagree.
Wally is a Davey Johnson disciple, and kinda like Billy Martin in his baseball approach and his inability to keep his personal life in check. Without sarcasm, the man is grission. Would you prefer Bob Melvin, who in the Billy Martin example bears striking resemblance to Bob Lemon?

I can think of no better leader of young, impressionable men than Wally Backman
Although according to Law, this team isn’t that young

Backman sees you your shirt tearing and chest exposing....
and raises you a DUI, a domestic “dispute,” some bankruptcy and some highly entertaining rants

Don't forget
lobbying Ron Gardenhire to beat the White Sox so the Sox manager could get fired and Wally could get the job. The Sox manager? Jerry Manuel.

So, basically, everything is Wally's fault.

Managers that where successful and had a temper lets see
Weaver, Martin, Lasorda, and so on and so on
Managers that already had a good team assembled
Weaver, Martin, LaSorda, and so on, and so on.
There is no correlation between acting like the occasional buffoon, and good managing skills.

Wally Ball = Jerry Ball
Absolutely, and I could not understand why some people here on AA would actually entertain the idea of having him manage the big league squad.
Perhaps the equation for Wally Ball should read like this:
((Jerry Ball+(Grission*2))+Crazy= Wally Ball
i say give it a shot
it can’t be worse than the Art Howe time
I hate Philadelphia so much.

Jerry is the Bruce Coslett of NY baseball...
Why the Wally-hate? He’s managing a gimme barely-A ball team that’s meant more of an economic development incentive and an incubator than a competitive team. So his mistakes, however correct in the description, may be motivated by something other than the motivations found at the major league level. He almost was the manager, on the merits, of another team before personal issues shipwrecked his chance. Rather than give up, he’s taken a number of exceedingly shit jobs to get back into baseball. A person learns a lot from failure, and I’m willing to give Wally the benefit of the doubt. If he turns into the baseball equivalent of the financial genius that his co-leader in dirty uniforms Lenny was, then at least it was a good experiment.
The man knew what it was like to win in Flushing. How many folks after October 27, 1986, who have not been playing tennis, have known that feeling?
i just checked
the cyclones have ceiliani batting second and he plays OF, so that puts a major hole in your wallyball=jerryball argument as the 2B doesnt hit second
I like Ike
