The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?

I agree.

Time for football.

This team is toast.

One day, this team is going to kill me.

It's July 16th and we're 2 games out of the WC

Forgive me if you’re being sarcastic, but there’s a difference between realism and over the top pessimism.

The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?

by Syler on Jul 17, 2010 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I was 50% sarcastic.

the other 50% is from 37 years’ worth of experience following this team.

Side Note: everyone’s hero, Steve Phillips was on WFAN today, basically saying that if the Mets are 8 or more back at the deadline they should not be buyers.

One day, this team is going to kill me.

by fxcarden on Jul 17, 2010 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

On general principle,

fuck Steve Phillips & his opinions. But he’s right that the Mets shouldn’t be buyers if they’re 8 GB.

agreed

Did he mean 8 back of the division or WC?

Division

he was also talking about how the Mets would have to fight 5 other teams for the WC.

One day, this team is going to kill me.

by fxcarden on Jul 17, 2010 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

If the Mets are 8+ GB at the deadline, Omar should be fired the next day

Omar has to either:

a) Make a move now to prevent that from happening or
b) Get lucky and have that not happen regardless.

He’s going to waste about 15 games — and probably 3 potential wins — between now (well, a week ago) and then. If we’re not buyers come 7/31, it’s his fault.

by Dan Lewis on Jul 17, 2010 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

it's not Omar's fault nobody can hit.

I blame that on the coaches.

It’s also not Omar’s fault that Jerry made Reyes play hurt.

One day, this team is going to kill me.

by fxcarden on Jul 17, 2010 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

But Omar

should’ve stepped in & prevented Manuel from letting Reyes play. I won’t blame him for the hitting though.

true.

One day, this team is going to kill me.

by fxcarden on Jul 17, 2010 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

It is Omar's fault

that he hired this idiot of a manager. It’s also his fault for doing a mediocre job of getting prospects. Ollie’s contract is his fault, so is Castillo’s. That said he could be worse and pull a Jim Duquette by trading Mejia for some overrated pitcher.

by secret defense on Jul 17, 2010 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

If we fall that far behind, it'll be because of the Braves more than anyone else

They’re probably the best team in the NL

Of course, I don’t think we’ll be that far back.

But in regards to your complaint, aside from a move for Lilly, a trade for a RH reliever, and maybe a trade for Kelly Johnson, there isn’t a whole lot Omar can do without ripping apart our farm system.

should give me a quick lesson in how to embed a jpeg. Then we can laugh at Ollie some more.

by Michkin on Jul 17, 2010 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Also in theory it's not that big of a deal

And I don’t actually think the Red Sox have any top 50 prospects. Big Market teams don’t need to produce mass amounts of their own stars because they can afford to pay for them, in theory, we should be more concerned with producing solid average/to above average players to supplement them, and to package in trades for expensive stars, and those players aren’t generally considered super big time prospects.

The problem is because we’re morons we don’t spend efficiently, so we end up spending like 45 million combined on the likes of Perez, K-rod, and Bay, who isn’t bad enough to be included with them but for the sake of this example for a total of like 4-5 WAR production, when the same combined amount could have gotten us CC and Holliday for like 12-14 WAR. Not to mention because of those contracts we’ll have virtually no chance of making a run at guys like Crawford and Lee.

Big market teams need to be smart and leverage the draft to maximize their MLB roster. Either by producing cheap talent or trading it for proven cost controlled stars. FA is not the best place to build a team, unless you’re the Yankees who can outspend everyone.

Well that's kind of my point

the mets should be able to outspend everyone instead they nickle and dime themselves like morons because they’re too afraid to give the 100 million dollar contract to someone like Holliday but they’ll give 90 million combined to K-rod and Perez. I agree that spending wisely in the FA market is important...

But the FA market can be a crap shoot. When teams draft and develop young talent, they are getting optimal return for minimal investment. Most FA are paid more than they will produce over their contract. Big market teams need to develop prospects. By developing prospects, they can either have cheap talent for their roster, or they can trade those players for MLB ready talent.

Well...

Since 2005 (not counting this year, the season isn’t over), only TWO players in all of baseball have done that.

Pujols and Utley

So there are only two stars currently in baseball?

what "smart"

teams pay so much for them? The big market teams mostly do it to appease their fans. You don’t see the Rays, or A’s, or other “progressive” teams paying top dollar for closers.

I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson

by Gina on Jul 18, 2010 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Well...

I think you might be over simplifying the the Big Market aspect. The Red Sox tried the bullpen by committee route (2003), and paid heavily for it. I don’t think appeasing the fan base helps you win games, so that thought is overblown. The Rays are currently paying Soriano 7.25 million dollars this year. Their bullpen was atrocious last season, and although he is making quite a bit for a closer on a small market team, they needed to solidify the bullpen. Their bullpen went from a problem in 09’, to a strength in 10’. The results of which are shown in their record.

Some other well paid closers on small market clubs:

Joe Nathan 11.25 per year
Cordero 12 million per year
Wood 11 million this year
Hoffman 7.5 million this year

I was talking about the month of 18-8 when everyone was talking about Jerry's extension...

I kept saying “it won’t last, this is the 1989 team.” And lo verily, it came to pass. Just to explain, the 1989 team had a streak somewhere midseason where they were completely unbeatable. They went like 24-4 or something. Even Ron Darling was unhittable. After 1986 and their playoff loss in 1988 I thought they were going to come through again. Then they laid a giant egg and missed the playoffs, and then the Pirates were good, and then the Braves were good and next thing I know it’s 1998.

Speaking of math, can anyone complete this series: 6, 3,1, 2, 0, 3, 0, 0, __.

the battle system is really confusing to begin with

the economy is pretty unbalanced, or at least for like the first 10-12 levels. The leveling up tree is completely unforgiving to newbies, you basically have to start planning from the very beginning or you’ll end up screwing yourself over. The quest seem to drag on and get tedious and boring. It’s hard to keep the side quests and quests organized, and a lot of them take too long and are a bit tedious themselves and involve too much traveling around IMO. And even though you can tackle the quest in any order the game still feels incredibly linear.

Ugh, can we please get another starter?

This is why I’m pushing so hard for Roy Oswalt (or even Brett Myers). Prospects come and go, but I can’t bear seeing Takahashi start anymore. Plus, you never know when the other shoe might drop with RA Dickey. I hope Omar is working around the clock to make something happen.

Yes, I like Jeff Francoeur and listen to WFAN. No, I am not a troll.

About the Ted Berg article.

You know what? It’s bullshit. You know what former ballplayers do when they are washed up? Become normal people. Get normal jobs. Go back to school. I used to feel sorry for them, but then I realized that a guy who never got past the minors still got to play baseball for a living for a period, rather that drive a truck, or sit in an office, or work at Target. Is it sad that dreams don’t come true, but how many astronauts do you see? Better question: how many people wash out of college, or law school, or medical school, or engineering school, or the military? I would wager that a lot of these folks would rather have played ball in their 20s.

by MookieTheCat on Jul 18, 2010 12:07 AM EDT reply actions

You have a point there.

Professional sports = meritocracy. There are plenty of industries where talented people don’t get the recognition they deserve.

by Juve1899 on Jul 18, 2010 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

But if you're a ball player

and you have what it takes to play professionally, you’re going to play professionally.

by Juve1899 on Jul 18, 2010 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree.

I’m a lawyer and to think about the legal profession the way he thinks about baseball, you’re a failure if you don’t become an appellate judge or a partner in a big law firm making tons of money. It’s just not the way the world works. Now Adam Greenberg, who saw one major league pitch and was permanently injured by it—that’s a sad story.

Yeah when the career is ended by things outside of someone's control it's sad.

I played against Adam in high school a few times, and he was an outstanding athlete. It’s a shame that things happened like they did.
