Open Thread: Mets vs Diamondbacks, 7/20/2010
New York Mets at Arizona Diamondbacks, Jul 20, 2010 9:40 PM EDT
Enright has an average fastball and also throws a slider. He pitched at Pepperdine University, the paradise by the sea. SB Nation doesn't have a picture of him but he seems like a serviceable arm.

This is a nice lineup
It’s not the 27 Yanks, but it’s the best lineup we’re going to get all year.
Need a win here to get back on track
Would like to get a win when Beltran is actually in the starting lineup sometime soon
I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.
Some math....
We are 49-44 at 93 games.
I figure we need 90 wins to have a shot.
That means 41-28 the rest of the way.
Doable ?. Yes, but they need to salvage this road trip, play .500 ball against the Braves and Phillies, and beat the shit out of everyone else. There isn’t a whole lot of room of error here. Get swept one or two series and you are on life support.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
blargh...you had to tell me

less ?.
88 and 87 didn’t do it in 07 and 08.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
Doable yes.
Gonna happen, no. Unless there’s another 18-8 streak in there (actually 2), doubtful. Possibly if the Braves are all replaced by an afterwork slow-pitch softball team.

I realize the numbers don't look too great right now,
but I’ve never really been a fan of speculating on what a team’s record needs to be for the rest of the season in order to make the playoffs. There are so, so many things that can happen between now and then.

In other news, I hate my neighborhood...
After studying last night I jumped on here for a while to see what had come up in the previous day.
At about 3:30 am the police started banging on the door next door. As it turns out Alcoholic Neightbor #1 (husband) stabbed Alcoholic Neighbor #2 (wife) and she called the cops. He’s facing 15 right now. It was an eventful evening to say the least.
AA stands for Amazin' Avenue here
not Alcoholics Anonymous
(even though the way the team’s been playing…..)
I'd rather they move.
And I think they are gonna be evicted. Quit retirement communities don’t appreciate felonies.

That’s why I became a fan of his to begin with, before I knew OBP and SLG and the like. Saw him play at Shea in like 1993 and he stretched a single to a double then later scored from first on a double he had no business scoring on.

not really they got some young talent
Jones, Alverez, Tabata and Milledge is a hot second half player getting full time AB’s now
well we are regressing to a .500 team
if you overperform you have to go on a pretty big losing streak to revert back to .500.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
That's exactly the wrong way of understanding regression
If you flip a coin a 100 times and get tails 60 times. It doesn’t mean that if I flip a coin another 100 times that I should get 60 heads to even if it out to 50/50.

Hilarious either way though.
it doesn't mean it automatically
but it means you expect it to eventually end up 50-50 right? And it can do that in the next 100 flips or the next 1000. there’s no rule that says it has to happen over a long period.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
With a large enough #, it will end up 50/50 yes.
If we truly believed the Mets to be a 500 team though, than you would’ve been a sucker to take a bet that they’ll play 400 ball in the second half. Small Sample Size and all that jazz, they’re more likely to play 500 ball more than anything else.
with a large enough sample size it's almost a lock to end up 50-50
but that doesn’t mean it can’t end up 50-50 immediately. And that seems to be whats happening now.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
It's not out of the question
Using my old analogy, you could very well flip 60 tails out of a 100 than 60 heads out of a 100. It’s not likely, but it’s not one in a million either.

The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
Hey, neither can Livan, but that hasn't stopped anyone from sending him out there every 5 days...

I sense Omar pulling a quick trigger trade to attempt to save his job
bye bye to either Niewenhuis, Flores, Thole, Meijia, or a frightening combo of a few of them.
For? Oswalt?

Because it's Omar.
He’s still trying to fix our pitching problems. He hasn’t caught up yet.

So
6 out. It is possible that the Mets will be completely out of the playoff race by the end of this road trip

Forgot the rest of my post
I think he’s shaming the front office into keeping him there with his hitting thus far.
I don't.
They’ll have him next year, too. Next year, assuming the Phillies are the Phillies, that’ll be their last stand, so to speak…

I disagree
If they have to give up Werth + prospects, they’ll be screwed going forward
"I want to win now, not 3 years from now. That's my stance." - Kevin Burkhardt
it's not worth us trading for anyone
they need more than 1 guy…might as well start playing for ‘11. So there’s no way Thole should be sent down.
They're not going to
Their lineup leads the league in OBP, they have very good starting pitching, and an excellent bullpen

Gnight all. Always fun posting here, even when we lose.
Let's go have a beer, Doc.

7 teams put up DOUBE DIGITS tonight.
And 6 teams with 7-9…
When does the discussion of dropping bay even further in the order happen???
Or have we hit his pyschic Rubicon and any further demotion turns him into a candadian puddle of melting ice. I mean, if the yankees can get bat A-rod 8th…
Then again, who would we even move up? The destined to be demoted Thole?
I hope he's playing hurt
Otherwise it’s going to be a rough 4 year ride.
Thole is hitting though, and Reyes looked good
But Thole can barely get PT
BREAKING: Turner optioned for Ollie
Thole is saved!….but we now have no backup IF

The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
the mets need to man up and demote barajas or blanco
how do you keep 3 catchers and no backup IF
Well Cora technically
they should call up WHATSHISNAME and send Nieve down
It could be a blessing in disguise
Jerry can no longer PH Cora now that he’s there only backup IF. He has to ride the bench in case of emergency situations.
