Yet another sensible move that should have been made long ago

in which management, instead of making the move, waited until circumstances utterly compelled it. (Yes, I know Hessman is coming off injury and couldn’t have been called up until recently; I’m referring mainly to the ending of the 3-catcher insanity.)

Not only that,

but Hessman could easily, actually be better than Davis. Poor Ike has an OBP of 294 over his last 286 PAs (ouch!) and an OPS that’s rather worse than Daniel Murphy’s the season we all figured out Murphy was never going to be a full time 1Bman.

Desperate times, desperate measures—I’d give Thole 80% of the starts at C, and see if Hessman could put up an OPS of 850 at 1B. I’d start giving Bay plenty of days off in favor of Carter, too, just for luck. What else… is Havens healthy enough to stand at 2B and in the batter’s box w/o falling down? Get him up. And Gee: let’s see if he can go through the league once or twice with an ERA around 3.00 before the league catches up with him.

Bay looks like he may be ready to break out of it.

Plus, Carter’s defense sux.

But why not Gee, Misch or someone else to give our moronic manager another bullpen arm. You know, to compensate for the blank roster spot that is #46.

Once again, Omar makes a move several days/weeks after he should have done so.

Great to see Hessman get called up this year. I really hope the guy gets to stick, but most likely Jerry will bury him on the bench with Carter. I actually had to check to make sure Carter hadn’t been sent down, that’s how far down the bench he is.

May you be locked in a battle of wits against Jerry Manuel.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Jul 26, 2010 8:46 PM EDT reply actions

Yup. Hessman's been hitting for awhile now,

and Davis and Bay haven’t. Wright hasn’t been getting days off either, which starts to make sense when your options at 3b are Blanco and Cora.

by Jack Str on Jul 27, 2010 1:16 AM EDT up reply actions

and remind you he's only up hear because Rod is on the DL, if not for the injury

we would still have 3 catchers on the roster. With super utlity Cora backing up 1st, 2nd, 3rd, SS.

It will be funny to see what inconsequential bit player gets scapegoated next for this team’s perennial woes.

Bit player

he was the starting catcher. I understand what you are saying, but it isn’t that Rod Barajas is being scapegoated. It’s Rod Bawilsonvaldezmathewsjrjacobscatalanottocoranieve…not one bit player, but the whole smorgasbord of failure that has been the supporting cast to the all-too-human holy trio.

And besides, people are mostly celebrating Hessman’s call-up.

by wobatus on Jul 27, 2010 7:17 AM EDT up reply actions

It's more like Omar knows the right thing to do in every situation

He’s just the biggest procrastinator. He waits too damn long to eventually cut GMJ, Jacobs, Nieve. Too long to remove Ollie and Maine from the rotation. He needs an injury to stop the 3 catcher nonsense and promote Hessman/Evans. Mejia being up was stupid to begin with, but he needed to see him fail for 2 months to the point that even Jerry knew the kid was over his head.

just me but this is so Mets.

It’s like they pick an injury out of a hat and everyone on the team must get it. This year its the oblique. Seriously, how is it that every year they all end up with the same injuries?

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
