Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

HoJo to Go?

Let me get this part out of the way first:  if Howard Johnson gets fired now or after the season, it won't bother me one bit.  But if he gets fired now, exactly what does this accomplish?  Who is going to take over the position and magically turn around the bats for the next two months?  Chip Hale? Razor Shines? Ken Oberkfell? Tim Teufel? Wally Backman? (Well, maybe they could be platoon coaches.)  I don't think even Charlie Lau in his heyday would have proclaimed, "I can fix Jason Bay in 15 minutes."  I just don't see hitters reacting to a new hitting coach in mid season the way a team might react to a managerial change. (Maybe during the All Star break like the last time we fired a hitting coach, but not at the end of July.)  Absent other forces, hitters tend to go back to their old habits.  Anyone remember this April and the French god of walks?  Yeah, that one lasted...almost into May.  When the season's over, we can get a new hitting coach.  (A new manager wouldn't hurt either.)  Right now, all you're doing is rearranging deck chairs.

Oh yeah, I might as well say this too:  this probably should be a FanShot.  So there.

Interesting observation that Jerry saw and not HOJO

Manuel said he noticed watching Friday’s game on TV after being ejected that Wright might be standing too far from the plate

Hojo bears some responsibility for the hacktastic attitude of this team

We are behind only Houston and Pittsburgh in OBP, which is a fireable offense in my eyes. Getting Cora, Frenchy and Barajas off the team would help but until that happens we will continue to lose

yeah

but HoJo can’t teach how to hit with RISP…can he? even with better plate discipline and more walks, this team cannot drive anyone in for their lives! I actually FEAR that they get men on base and load the bases…

thats because if you can't hit with runners not in scoring position

you probably can’t hit with them in RISP either

Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

Keith Hernandez

he acts like he knows everything about hitting in the booth, and maybe he does.

Does anybody realize that

Eddie Yost (3rd base coach 1968-76) is still alive? I lobby him for hitting instructor:

1) He had eight seasons with 100 + walks (he can teach them lay off pitches)
2) Born in Brooklyn (local connection)
3) Was third base coach for the 1969 WS champions (connection to team history)

Could definitely do worse than this.

What's the score, boys?
What did Bugs Bunny do?
What's with the Carrot League baseball today?

Done and done.

I’m in. An old WW2 vet era baseball man is what this team needs. No idea whether Yost served in the war but he’s of that age that he could scare some overpaid young men into living up to their contracts.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
