HAHAHHA

Nice ML2 flashback.

Pelfrey, Niese, Dickey, Santana sure sounds like a great playoff rotation, don't it? Let's Go Mets!

Dickey as a reliever, and the manager uses that move to indicate he wants Dickey to come in the game?

Or i'd be happy if

they make it Duda/Hessman and let Evans hit everyday in the hopes he could become more effective against righties. Also, Hessman is currently more versatile position-wise.

by dontstopbelieving on Jul 29, 2010 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Hessman

Has to stay on this team. He’s a replacement-level backup 3B who can also play 1B and, in a pinch, 2B.

by Dan Lewis on Jul 29, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Is it crazy to say "start him at 2B"

Total of 5 minor league games at second, but he’s played 16 games at short. That’s just about the amount of experience Tatis had when the Mets threw him out at middle IF a few times, and he didn’t embarrass himself. I think the bat is so much of an upgrade that you have to consider it.

by dontstopbelieving on Jul 29, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

it’s pretty crazy. Tatis was a lot smaller and more agile, and he never looked like a second baseman. I’d rather not have a 6’5", 215 second baseman trying to turn the DP . . . unless it’s Dicktorino heading into second.

by tmu on Jul 29, 2010 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

would you rather have Castillo trying?

I mean, whats the worse that can happen. Hessman injures himself and we’re back to sending Castillo out there?

I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson

not to mention Hessman would probably be a better #2 hitter

by Gina on Jul 29, 2010 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Eh, normally if you can play a good third base you can do a passable job at second

And vice versa. Sometimes just as good but we don’t really have many real world examples of a guy going fulltime from one to the other. The few that happened it has worked out pretty good.

by FrancoTAU on Jul 29, 2010 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

No offense, but you're completely insane, sir.

Very few players can make the switch. The switches you see that are at least somewhat successful have been tried out extensively in nongame situations. Teams don’t simply say to Ron Santo, for instance, “hey pal, you’re our starting second baseman today.” If a player can’t handle it fairly well in extended practice, or in the offseason, or in Spring Training, you can be sure he isn’t going to find himself suddenly starting at a position in the regular season he probably can’t play unless it’s a genuine emergency.

by Jack Str on Jul 30, 2010 4:25 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Honestly

a good, athletic third baseman should have no problem with 2nd base. Wright would probably be fine, Ryan Zimmerman would probably be fantastic, Alfonzo was obviously awesome, etc. The problem is that a lot of guys end up at 3rd base b/c they’re not athletic enough for the middle infield, but maybe they have good arms, or they’re good hitters who are blocked at first by someone who’s even less athletic, or they’re not fast enough to be outfielders (Bobby Bonilla, Howard Johnson, Gary Sheffield, etc.). I really have no idea which one Hessman is, but a blanket “3rd basemen can’t play 2nd” is just as dumb as a blanket “3rd basemen can easily play 2nd.”

Greatttt, thanks Twinkies for making the Nats better going forward.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
