"It ain't going to be pretty. No fine is going to be big enough. No suspension is going to be long enough." ~Gary Sheffield
Is this gonna be like last year
Where Reyes is supposed to be back in a week, and then not be back until next May?
No, so far it's taking the same approach as with Pagan
I say he’s back Tuesday or Wednesday.
Though I wouldn’t hate holding him out til post AS break either. A healthy Reyes in the second half is 10x better than an injured one.
I support Jenrry Mejia as a starter. Screw you Jerry Manuel for thinking he's a set-up man.
the marlins must have misdiagnosed him
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
time for Dickey to show Stras how a real pitcher does it
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?
I'm a little worried about this one
These guys will have to work the count a little to get the pitch count up…but that’s not a strength of this team. I fear many many Ks…wish Jose was playing.
Must of put Thole in to hope for better contact

I missed the end of what he was saying?
was he saying, Wright’s not lucky he’s just good? There’s some truth to that based on the last 2 years anyway. Although Wright’s luck did catch up with him at the end of the year last year.
no he said people automatically expect BABIP to correct to league averag
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
the problem is he treated the stat like people look at it in a bubble

I transcribed it for possible use in a future post
G: Can I say something about sabermetrics?
R: Yes.
G: Because we don’t talk about sabermetrics very often. And you know I think there are certain metrics that have come into play that are useful. But I think sometimes the people that are adherent to sabermetrics overrate the importance of them. In David Wright’s case, David has struck out a ton this year. Struck out 91 times. And yet he’s hitting well over .300. Now, one of the stats that the sabermetrics people like to throw at you is batting average on balls in play. And if you have a particularly high batting average on balls in play, they like to think that it’s because you’re lucky. In other words, if you have a high batting average on balls in play, it shouldn’t be that high, which means you’re having a fortunate year and you’ll come back down again.
::Game action narration::
G: Conversely, if a pitcher has a particularly low batting average on balls in play, they like to tell you it’s going to rise eventually. Well, to me that doesn’t make any sense. Certain guys hit the ball harder than other guys hit it. Certain pitchers induce more groundballs or more weakly hit balls than others. That’s part of what you’re trying to do. Am I totally off base with that?
R: No I totally agree with you, I think that for the average hitter, to have a high average putting balls in play, it’s probably because they do have some lucky hits. But certain hitters, like Wright, hit the ball hard almost all the time.
by James Kannengieser on Jul 3, 2010 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions
as far as that here's my question
David’s had a BABIP above .390 for well over 900 PA’s…aren’t we passed the point where it’s expected to stabilize?
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
My guess with him is that he's striking out, or at the very least swinging and missing,
and balls he used to make contact on for an out, so when he makes contact he’s hitting it well enough for a hit. At least that’s what I’m hoping and he doesn’t regress.
yeah that's what i thought
but guys like Ryan Howard and Adam Dunn who K a lot don’t have BABIP as high as his.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
DWright is one of the few extreme Line Drive hitters
which leads to a higher BABIP. Sabre geeks admit some pitchers and batters can control their BABIP. It’s just usually a red flag for 90% of players if they have an abnormally high or low one.
But his LD% is 20.7%
well below his 23.4% career line and 25.7% line of last year (and even 25.6% two years ago)
I'm interested to see this future post
because as I’m new to the sabermetric revolution, this is actually something I’ve wondered about: that is, whether BABIP is more relevant for some hitters re: luck than others.
by Thomas Wachtel on Jul 3, 2010 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions
whenever you're using BABIP, you generally want to look at it along with LD% and HR/FB ratios
to get an idea if the batter is hitting the ball hard, or just blooping hits or finding holes on grounders.
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?
by KeithsMoustache on Jul 3, 2010 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions
yes there's xBABIP
which calculates your BABIP based on your line drive %. and then a newer xBABIP which THT came up with that calculates based on your skill set and batted ball profiles, i.e Reyes hitting a lot of groundballs is going to have a higher BABIP than Bengie Molina hitting a lot of groundballs because Reyes can beat them out.

I hate Philadelphia so much.
well folks…I’m a Phils fan, but this afternoon I’m going to avoid the current frustration that is the Phils of late, and listen to the Nats-Mets game. Thanks to a squabble between Time-Warner Cable and the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) down here in NC, I’m essentially forbidden from watching the Nats EVER. So I was all excited when I heard the Mets-Nats was an afternoon game with SS starting. I printed up a scoresheet, sat down at my TV and was greeted by a broadcast of Braves-Fish. So…I’m going to follow along on mlbradio and follow along here. I’m going to root for the Nats, but I’m going to avoid snark as much as possible. Feel free to lob grenades at me as a Phils fan. After the past three seasons, we deserve a few.

Couple other thoughts on this one
That actually was a catchable ball for Pagan. It would have been a great catch, but he should have been there.
Frankie, you are awful, don’t know what else to say, I can’t believe how much longer he’s here for.
We need to find a taker for Barajas. Go with the the Thole-Blanco pairing, Thole is a legitimate major league bat, and he’s no worse in the field than Barajas.
Tatis has no business on this team any longer. Sorry, but it’s true. He’s hopeless vs. lefties so why is he here?
