For Real?
Not a late April Fool’s joke???
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the street: wheredotheygo?!?!?
Damn
They traded their opening day cleanup hitter for nothing? This sucks!
The one and only mistermet on teh Interwebz!

The fact he was opening day Cleanup hitter was the real April Fools Joke
on the 3 Fools Jerry, Omar, and Jeff
The saddest thing is that he's probably only the second-worst cleanup hitter of the year

i dunno at least with JaKobs if his hacktastic approach ever managed to make contact
he had a chance of going deep. I don’t remember Frankie Cats even making contact
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

i guess you wouldn't really be choosing either for offense
i would think cat at least has some defensive ability
I like Ike, I hate Jerry
i don't think either could call defense their forte either
although i guess Dr. Katz might be better at 1b that JaKobs

JaKobs is kind of big though
The ball could accidentally hit him whereas the much smaller Smithtown’sOwn would actually have to make an effort.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
Just think about the number of players on the opening day roster
who are no longer on ANY major league roster:
Jacobs – DFA’d by Mets, unclaimed by any team, eventually assigned to AAA notwithstanding professed lack of desire to play in AAA. Now traded for PTBNL.
FCat – DFA’d by Mets, essentially retired
GMJ – DFA’d by Mets, recently opted out of minor league contract w/Reds
Green – DL’d after only a few (horrid) games with arm injury that was probably preexisting
Tatis – out for rest of year with injury that apparently dated back to late 2006
Nieve – DFA’d, unclaimed (whole rationale of keeping him on roster so long was lack of options)
Maine – out for season
Perez – initially DL’d with “injury,” now pitching only when everyone else (except, of course, K-Rod in a tie game on the road) is unavailable
Tejada – in minors after being overmatched at the plate
Mejia – in minors, rehabbing injury
Igarashi – in minors
Have I missed anyone?

Spring ends officially on June 20 or 21.
The Mets were just extending spring training to the full extent of spring.

And how many of those guys did everyone outside of Omar/Jerry...
know had absolutely no business on a major-league roster?
Jacobs, Smithtown’s Own, GMJ, Nieve, Mejia, Perez, etc

Good God.
I’ve blotted it from memory.
I’ve created this screen memory, where we picked up Joel Piniero by matching the Angels’ offer. Since we were his first choice, he jumped at a two year deal. in that version of reality the Wilpons decided to pony up and lock in the postseason by inking sure thing Matt Holliday. Obviously, of course, we signed Kelly Johnson to a cheap, 2 year deal, and are leading the Braves by two and a half games. The FO felt that with signing two good players there was no reason to allow the soft spot at 2b to weaken the team when it was a pure buyer’s market for 2bmen.
Jeff Francouer was, of course, DFA’ed May 15th after it became clear his preseason palaver about taking more walks was more blown smoke. Chris Carter and Lucas Duda are combining for a solid if unspectacular 850 OPS in RF, and Jerry Manuel was last seen working a tuna boat south of the Antilles.

The FO felt that with signing two good players there was no reason to allow the soft spot at 2b to weaken the team
to me is the most frustrating since. It makes sense to spend no money and dedicate on development, it makes sense to spend on cheap risk/reward options to try and catch something useful for multiple years. it makes NO sense to spend huge on a player in his decline years who’s only going to be worth that money to you the first two years of a 5 year deal and then not spend the money to make sure you get that value back by putting together a play-off team. Now we’re overpaying Jason Bay with the hopes he’ll make us an 84 win team instead of an 80 win team.
it’s the same reason I still think signing Cliff Lee would be worth it, at least then we’ll have a chance of being good enough next year to make the money we still owe Santana , Bay K-rod, past that year somewhat worth it.

Who's that Nick Evans guy you're talking about?
Seriously, though, I hope we get either Kyle Drabek or Darin Mastroianni as the PTBNL. Both have been doing so well for New Hampshire this year.

Serious?
You seriously think we can get the Blue Jays top #1 prospect, the centerpiece of the deal for Roy Halladay the best pitcher in baseball, for Mike Jacobs?
Gas prices today are a lot like a pitcher's ERA. Anything under 3 is amazing, under 4 is pretty good and anything 5 and up is something you want to avoid.

Wasn't Kyle Drabek Philly's #1 prospect not too long ago?
If so, this might from the “How The MIghty Have Fallen” category…
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the street: wheredotheygo?!?!?
how bad will this player be?
that he is a PTBNL for mike jakobs?
I like Ike, I hate Jerry
They traded Brett Wallace and needed a AAA 1B
http://www.doublebobbyjones.com/ -Double Bobby Jones: a Mets blog
I think the return will yield
a bag a hockey pucks and Easton Hockey sticks
they could at least add some Canadian beer
never tried any, but they must have some good kind

You really should try some Molson, Labatt Blue, or Moosehead
Molson XXX is the Absinthe of beers (7.3%alc./vol.)
Save Jenrry Mejia!
This is just a prelude.
They had to make room for Jeff Conine or Trot Nixon to come out of retirement.

That was horrible, when Conine was Minaya's big deadline move.
Truly, truly horrible. Right up there with the Shawn Green powerhouse deal.
I think it is safe to assume Omar WON this trade
it doesnt even matter who the ptbnl is
If you know Mets history...
You know that Mike Jacobs is likely to be the PTBNL.

Scary thought...
Look at your post from above, listing the players on the opening day roster who are no longer in the majors. Chance that the Blue Jays will pick one of them up and send them back to us? In my mind very high. The return of the FCat.
by MookieTheCat on Jul 30, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Gallows humor. Gotta love it.
That will be before Bay returns from the DL, on a day David Wright has off, right after Beltran tweaks a knee during warmups:
Now battingbattingbatting…. your cleanup hitterhitterhitter… Frank Catalanattonattonatto..
Don't be too sure
Perhaps the Jays signed Carlos Delgado and traded him back to us, just to complete the circle of life.
by dontstopbelieving on Jul 30, 2010 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Now we just need him to get hot for a month or so
Then we might get a rookie league or low A player instead of a Dog
Neat
The Mets have likely given away around 4-6 wins so far this year by using a rotating pool of a dozen or so egregiously sub-replacement-level scrubs like Jacobs, Ollie, Cats, Nieve and Cora instead of ordinary, replacement-level scrubs.
The Braves, by way of comparison, have lost no more than 2-3 wins by fielding sub-replacement players, almost all of which is due to Nate McLouth and his .254 wOBA.
Amazingly
Jacobs had a 0.1 WAR in his brief time with us. Not sure exactly how that happened. So he wasn’t actually sub-replacement, although almost certainly worse than Carter or Davis would’ve done had they been given the starting job instead.
by dontstopbelieving on Jul 30, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Makes me doubt the validity of WAR

WAR...

I have to remember that replacement level is really, really bad. It's a 49 win team.
It’s just about 1962 Mets bad. .Jacobs put up a line of 208/.296/.375/.671 for an OPS+ of 80. In ’62 Marv Throneberry put up a comparatively excellent .244/.306/.426/.732 for an OPS+ of 95.
BBRef has Jacobs as exactly replacement level, btw. That’s about what his play felt like this year. He’d be the first baseman on a team that wins 49 games while losing 113. The starting first baseman. That’s some ugly baseball.
Well, he hit that one home run
He didn’t really get to suck for very long. I feel pretty comfortable calling him sub-replacement, though, considering his total WAR since 2007 is still -0.7.
No, that's not it
The entirety of his value, interestingly, was from fielding, where Fangraphs has him at .7 runs above replacement during his time here. (Hitting-wise, he was .5 runs below replacement.) It’s a bit odd, in that for most of his career, he’s been a well-below-replacement fielder. So I’d chalk it up to a combination of sample size and the still-developing nature of fielding stats.
by dontstopbelieving on Jul 30, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions
You mean 0.5 runs below average and 0.7 runs above average.
He only had 28 PAs so it’s to hard to be too good or bad.
weird
i always assumed those were below/above replacement
I like Ike, I hate Jerry
Yeah
I just noticed that now; it’s kinda confusing.
by dontstopbelieving on Jul 30, 2010 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions
I'll see your 4-6 wins, and raise you a couple more.
Incredible. McLouth has actually been far, far worse than Francouer.
yeah i don't get that
the Braves have some weird luck when they make good trades.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
Frenchy next
"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"
This trade would still be a win
Even if Toronto forgot to later name a player. Who would even notice?
I congratulate your FO for dumping the stink that was Mike Jacobs for anything of value.
I interrupt this thread to ask for your help. The Nats face the Phillies tonight as Roy Oswalt makes his first start. I am changing my plans to visit Nats Park and cheer on my squad while making Philly fans as miserable as possible. Certainly the Mets and Nats have their differences at times. But I believe that we agree in ABP: Anyone But Philadelphia (and preferably the Mets). I have started a thread at Federal Baseball (which has no waiting period) to brainstorm ways to combat the Philly Menace. I am asking for your help in brainstorming reasons to hate the Phillies and ways to combat the Phillies for Nats fans still learning how to support their team.
I have already enlisted a Mets fan to attend the game with me and add his voice to the Philly hating masses. You represent a truly fanbase in our division who has already shown that you can combat the Phillies. I appreciate your support.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
Going back a ways
but Pete Rose and Joe Morgan were both on the Phillies. When they sucked. Rose and Morgan that is.
We need to brainstorm reasons to hate the Phillies?
Just look at them, everything reaks of douchiness. Shane Dicktorino. Charlie Manuel. Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard winning MVP’s. Cole Hamlet, that dumb ESPN commercial he was in. Brian Schneider, former nat and met. Brett Myers was a Philly. Not to mention the fans. That fucking bandbox they call a stadium. the phanatic. Philadelphia. that fucking trade they just pulled off for Oswalt. I am pretty sure they hate Scott Rolen. And this is all just current reasons to hate them.
I like Ike, I hate Jerry
You really want to make Philly fans mad?
Tell them that the food at CBP sucks. They never shut up about the food at CBP. Never. A sign that says “the cheesesteaks here are better than back home” or something to that effect should do the trick.
Or a sign that says “I Get To Watch The Phillies Without Fear of Vomit or Tasers.”

They go on and on and on and on about the food/bars etc. To their credit, that park does have some nice amenities, especially during rain delays, but it’s typical Philly: getting excited about your “unique” experience that everyone else has.

They had to clear 1B at AAA Buffalo for the second coming
of Daniel Murphy in the near future.
by Putnan Prince on Jul 30, 2010 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Huh. Is Murphy really close to coming back?
I’d love to see him grab a backup spot on the major league club in 2011. He always seemed exactly like the kind of guy good teams have on hand, guys who can fill in for a month at 1b or 3b without killing the team (as opposed to someone like, say, Mike Jacobs), guys with average or better defense that you aren’t afraid to sit your stars for in order to give them an occasional day off.
Hooray for "nothing" moves!
If there's ever a riot at Citi Field and Oliver Perez was the starter, I started the riot.
Unless the PTBNL is the scrappy little no armed second baseman from Family Guy
nice work. If it is, I’d say the deal is sixes

Rumor is that the PTBNL = Kevin Ahrens

for a former first round pick he sucks and got traded for someone who sucks.

i still think its a win for us
but he was a big loss for the blue jays, 16th overall pick!

Interesting
Pretty awful numbers thus far, but it looks like they pushed him too hard and too early; after a wOBA of .321 in A-ball right out of high school, no way should they have sent him to high-A the next year (or the year after that). He’s still 21, so perhaps he’s salvageable.
