JaKobs is kind of big though

The ball could accidentally hit him whereas the much smaller Smithtown’sOwn would actually have to make an effort.

Just think about the number of players on the opening day roster

who are no longer on ANY major league roster:

Jacobs – DFA’d by Mets, unclaimed by any team, eventually assigned to AAA notwithstanding professed lack of desire to play in AAA. Now traded for PTBNL.

FCat – DFA’d by Mets, essentially retired

GMJ – DFA’d by Mets, recently opted out of minor league contract w/Reds

Green – DL’d after only a few (horrid) games with arm injury that was probably preexisting

Tatis – out for rest of year with injury that apparently dated back to late 2006

Nieve – DFA’d, unclaimed (whole rationale of keeping him on roster so long was lack of options)

Maine – out for season

Perez – initially DL’d with “injury,” now pitching only when everyone else (except, of course, K-Rod in a tie game on the road) is unavailable

Tejada – in minors after being overmatched at the plate

Mejia – in minors, rehabbing injury

Igarashi – in minors

Have I missed anyone?

Good God.

I’ve blotted it from memory.

I’ve created this screen memory, where we picked up Joel Piniero by matching the Angels’ offer. Since we were his first choice, he jumped at a two year deal. in that version of reality the Wilpons decided to pony up and lock in the postseason by inking sure thing Matt Holliday. Obviously, of course, we signed Kelly Johnson to a cheap, 2 year deal, and are leading the Braves by two and a half games. The FO felt that with signing two good players there was no reason to allow the soft spot at 2b to weaken the team when it was a pure buyer’s market for 2bmen.

Jeff Francouer was, of course, DFA’ed May 15th after it became clear his preseason palaver about taking more walks was more blown smoke. Chris Carter and Lucas Duda are combining for a solid if unspectacular 850 OPS in RF, and Jerry Manuel was last seen working a tuna boat south of the Antilles.

this

The FO felt that with signing two good players there was no reason to allow the soft spot at 2b to weaken the team

to me is the most frustrating since. It makes sense to spend no money and dedicate on development, it makes sense to spend on cheap risk/reward options to try and catch something useful for multiple years. it makes NO sense to spend huge on a player in his decline years who’s only going to be worth that money to you the first two years of a 5 year deal and then not spend the money to make sure you get that value back by putting together a play-off team. Now we’re overpaying Jason Bay with the hopes he’ll make us an 84 win team instead of an 80 win team.

it’s the same reason I still think signing Cliff Lee would be worth it, at least then we’ll have a chance of being good enough next year to make the money we still owe Santana , Bay K-rod, past that year somewhat worth it.

I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson

by Sir Tmac on Jul 30, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Neat

The Mets have likely given away around 4-6 wins so far this year by using a rotating pool of a dozen or so egregiously sub-replacement-level scrubs like Jacobs, Ollie, Cats, Nieve and Cora instead of ordinary, replacement-level scrubs.

The Braves, by way of comparison, have lost no more than 2-3 wins by fielding sub-replacement players, almost all of which is due to Nate McLouth and his .254 wOBA.

by psiogen on Jul 30, 2010 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

Amazingly

Jacobs had a 0.1 WAR in his brief time with us. Not sure exactly how that happened. So he wasn’t actually sub-replacement, although almost certainly worse than Carter or Davis would’ve done had they been given the starting job instead.

by dontstopbelieving on Jul 30, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the street: wheredotheygo?!?!?

by CharlieH on Jul 30, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to remember that replacement level is really, really bad. It's a 49 win team.

It’s just about 1962 Mets bad. .Jacobs put up a line of 208/.296/.375/.671 for an OPS+ of 80. In ’62 Marv Throneberry put up a comparatively excellent .244/.306/.426/.732 for an OPS+ of 95.

BBRef has Jacobs as exactly replacement level, btw. That’s about what his play felt like this year. He’d be the first baseman on a team that wins 49 games while losing 113. The starting first baseman. That’s some ugly baseball.

by Jack Str on Aug 2, 2010 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, he hit that one home run

He didn’t really get to suck for very long. I feel pretty comfortable calling him sub-replacement, though, considering his total WAR since 2007 is still -0.7.

by psiogen on Jul 30, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

No, that's not it

The entirety of his value, interestingly, was from fielding, where Fangraphs has him at .7 runs above replacement during his time here. (Hitting-wise, he was .5 runs below replacement.) It’s a bit odd, in that for most of his career, he’s been a well-below-replacement fielder. So I’d chalk it up to a combination of sample size and the still-developing nature of fielding stats.

by dontstopbelieving on Jul 30, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

You mean 0.5 runs below average and 0.7 runs above average.

He only had 28 PAs so it’s to hard to be too good or bad.

I congratulate your FO for dumping the stink that was Mike Jacobs for anything of value.

I interrupt this thread to ask for your help. The Nats face the Phillies tonight as Roy Oswalt makes his first start. I am changing my plans to visit Nats Park and cheer on my squad while making Philly fans as miserable as possible. Certainly the Mets and Nats have their differences at times. But I believe that we agree in ABP: Anyone But Philadelphia (and preferably the Mets). I have started a thread at Federal Baseball (which has no waiting period) to brainstorm ways to combat the Philly Menace. I am asking for your help in brainstorming reasons to hate the Phillies and ways to combat the Phillies for Nats fans still learning how to support their team.

I have already enlisted a Mets fan to attend the game with me and add his voice to the Philly hating masses. You represent a truly fanbase in our division who has already shown that you can combat the Phillies. I appreciate your support.

Just look at them, everything reaks of douchiness. Shane Dicktorino. Charlie Manuel. Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard winning MVP’s. Cole Hamlet, that dumb ESPN commercial he was in. Brian Schneider, former nat and met. Brett Myers was a Philly. Not to mention the fans. That fucking bandbox they call a stadium. the phanatic. Philadelphia. that fucking trade they just pulled off for Oswalt. I am pretty sure they hate Scott Rolen. And this is all just current reasons to hate them.

Huh. Is Murphy really close to coming back?

I’d love to see him grab a backup spot on the major league club in 2011. He always seemed exactly like the kind of guy good teams have on hand, guys who can fill in for a month at 1b or 3b without killing the team (as opposed to someone like, say, Mike Jacobs), guys with average or better defense that you aren’t afraid to sit your stars for in order to give them an occasional day off.

Pretty awful numbers thus far, but it looks like they pushed him too hard and too early; after a wOBA of .321 in A-ball right out of high school, no way should they have sent him to high-A the next year (or the year after that). He’s still 21, so perhaps he’s salvageable.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
