Mets Place Jason Bay On Disabled List
Per Andy McCullough of the Star Ledger, among others. The move is retroactive to 7/26, and Jesus Feliciano will be called up to take Bay's place on the roster. And by that I mean he will go 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Zing!

Blargh
Hope Jason gets better soon. Really don’t like the idea of Francoeur starting everyday for the next two months.

The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
can they really justify frenchy over jesus?
at least jesus makes contact, and isn’t, ya know, a complete black hole offensively

There's only one justification they need

Francoeur is in the Proven Veteran™ quota.
And the ARM. And the SI cover. And the smiles. And the clubhouse leadershipz on/from the field. And he tells others when to shave.

not surprised
but this should have happened a few days ago, no? BTW, haven’t been around the internet, was this from that awesome catch in LA last Friday? I was there for that, and that was easily the best defensive play I have seen live.

this is brilliant....
how do you do this ?.
I have many jokes to play on people.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
If Feliciano platoons with Frenchy
I could live with it. If Frenchy continues to start everyday, it’ll be infuriating.

Carter/Feliciano should get all the starts vs. most pitchers (righties).
But, of course, this will not happen.
Carter is the lefthanded version of Frenchy
and he hasn’t exactly hit righties well

The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
Carter's career minor league numbers
show better plate discipline than he’s displayed so far in the majors. His career minor league OBP is 73 points higher than his career batting average.

Bay hasn't been great either
…so this isn’t a huge loss at all. Overall, I hope Bay’s first year as a Met was like D-Wright last year: Getting used to Citi Field and then reverting to normal numbers.

It is a huge loss because it means Frenchy plays everyday for the most part

The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
so?
Frenchy is better defensively, has more HRs, same RBIs…only downside, loses .20 pts in average. Bay has been horrible this year.

(Smacks forehead)
You seemingly forget the 50 point advantage Bay has in OBP
Bay, even in his crappy state right now, is still a far, far better player than Failcoeur

The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
both suck
doesn’t mean anything. we’re swapping 7-hole hitters. francoeur is better defensively at least.

is he really that much better defensively?
at least Bay has the ability to turn it around offensively

I was going to say something before he got flamed but alas too late.
There are better ways to measure their performances. Check out this Advanced Statistics Primers before quoting RBI as a indicative of their talent/production.

my point though
is that they both suck

A 50 point advantage in OBP is absolutely a big deal

bay doesn't suck...
he’s been an excellent hitter throughout his career. Saying he sucks is extremely short sighted

he does suck this year though
at least, is not very good

bay has been league average this year, Frenchy 20% below average.
Bay should get better, This is who #dfafrancoeur is
RBIs is not a meaningful stat to evaluate hitters

In my view the best move
(and I’ve been beating this drum for the past week or so) would be to roll the dice with a platoon of Hessman and Duda. They both have extreme platoon splits so they’re ideal platoon candidates. They also each have attributes sorely lacking on the Mets – power and the ability to get on base via the BB. Admittedly, they are each having career years, so projecting their performance in the majors is a bit tough, but using the equivalency calculator at minorleaguesplits.com, their numbers this year translate into an extremely effective major league platoon.
by dontstopbelieving on Jul 30, 2010 4:43 PM EDT reply actions
I would do this
Wouldn’t it be better to know if Duda is better than people expect and now is a good time to find out, He might spark the team
And it's not just about being better than people expect
He would be hard-pressed to perform worse than Frenchy against righties. There’s a chance that his ultimate value to the team would be about the same as Feliciano’s, if Feliciano hits for a higher average and Duda hits for more power.
But there’s little question that Feliciano’s upside is basically what we saw – decent-to-high average, contact hitter, not great in terms of plate discipline or taking walks. His minor league numbers tell you that, and it’s not like he’s going to develop any more as a player at his age. Conversely, Duda is more of a risk – he could be completely overmatched – but his upside is much higher. Given where the Mets are in the standings, they aren’t going to make the playoffs without a lot of breaks/luck, so the better course, in my view, would be to roll the dice with the high-upside players, rather than players like Feliciano, who, as Dennis Green might put it, are who we think they are.

I wouldn't be opposed to giving Duda some chances
but, shoot, keep Jesus up here too. Get rid of Failcore
I like Ike, I hate Jerry
I wouldn't object to this
in that Feliciano’s platoon splits are minimal, making him a more useful bench player. Particularly with Hessman on the team, there’s little use for Frenchy at this point.

Duda needs to play a full year in the minors and prove that his power is real before we start giving him roles on the ML roster

I would normally agree
if the options at the major league level were appreciably better. But we’re talking about Frenchy and Feliciano here; one is an above-replacement player against lefties and a below-replacement players against righties; the other is a replacement player against both. Under the circumstances, especially with a capable platoon partner, I’d take a chance and see what happens – not unlike what they did with Thole last year.
Re the power, it’s not uncommon for that to be one of the later “tools” to develop in a player, and the plate discipline has always been there.

This is exactly the point I was making in a FanPost on Davis.
In that case it’s not like Davis is a terrible player—of course he isn’t. But he has been clearly below average and continues to be below average, and for a team on the fringes of contention as the Mets are, that’s not good enough. They need to roll the dice.
Of course, with this FO, they won’t. They’d rather lock in for 84-78 than shoot for 90-72 while risking 78-84.
You know what's sadder?
That we have that option, but won’t exercise it. The same way we had a number of options coming out of ST that didn’t involve Maine and Perez, but didn’t exercise any of those, either.
