Keyser Soze is behind this year’s deadline moves. Think about it: a bunch of deals that seems unrelated and make no sense, where each party seems not to know who he is dealing for, but there is an overarching sense of pure weirdness.

The Mets’ philosophy continues to be to try to find a pitcher — starter or reliever — liked by their scouts who is currently having a bad year…One pitcher the Mets have discussed internally is Texas’ Rich Harden, who is due about $3.5 million between what is left on his 2010 salary and his 2011 buyout. Harden was 3-3 with a 5.68 ERA before going on the DL with a glute injury.

I can't read the legal docs...
But from what I can see it looks not good for ole Jeffy. Losses of private funds are one thing, misuse of retirement plan funds is another, especially if 92% is invested with one person. Lack of diversification is a fairly easy road to breach of fiduciary duty charges. Of course I don’t know the details but…

I haven't really been following a lot of these trades recently, I'v been busy,
But we pretty much could have gotten Haren, Oswalt, Berkman and Wil Ramos for like Pelfrey, Feliciano and a bunch of non prospects?

His power is limited by his home park. He’s limited against righties, particularly ones with great fastballs. His arm is weak and his defense is declining.
That’s not even taking into account crap like, “he never gets a big hit.”

And dude take a look at splits nearly every players power is limited to their home parks, because most guys alter their swings to fit the stadium they play 50% of the games they play. What 4-6 WAR players don’t get overpaid, or at least paid big, on the open market? And what other type of players, that this front office would realistically target, would put us over the edge.
And I do think on 6 WAR type player would put us over the edge. We’re likely to finish around 84 wins with the crap we’ve been running out this year. You don’t think a full year of Beltran, likely a better year from Bay, and mostly everything else remaining the same with Cliff Lee would win around 90?

heres the problem i'm having
this is pretty much the best roster we’re going to have and the team is mediocre. Arguably we got lucky with emergence of Dickee, Neise, Pagan, and Davis making up for shit off season planning. Outside of 2nd b and the rotation, where can we improve without losing some pieces?

we’d be pretty well set with the starting rotation. And I wouldn’t mind giving him 20+ M dollars/year because his production is worth it.

Well Cliff Lee could be where we could improve without losing
which was kind of my point as to why we should make a run at him. If we’re not willing to do something like that how exactly are we going to expect to get better next year, or 2012, all our minor leaguers have taken a step back, and the only difference makers available are going to cost $$$.

we would still
not know what to expect from Pelf. not really know what to expect from Dickey, though i have high hopes. need to upgrade 2B greatly. need to upgrade the bench greatly for when someone inevitably gets injured, which brings up the point of us needing to have full healthy seasons from jose and beltran. we would need a similar season from pagan. and we would need to figure out how to put a pen together that we can rely on. also, we really couldnt be sure of what to expect from davis or niese, though i have high hopes. and jason bay improving is no guarantee

so will probably be somewhere near 185-190 next year. And there’s really no reason they shouldn’t be willing to spend up to the lt. Plus it would only be one year until Perez at least was off the books, and Castillo, and if they pull their heads out of their asses K-rod.

valdes has been pitching over his head for a while now..he definitely doesn’t have overwhelming stuff as his numbers (before tonight’s game) seem to suggest. For a guy that’s normally is percieved to be all about the ‘feel’, Jerry really does look into numbers too much. Pelfrey should’ve finished off that inning, and if not, at least have faced the next batter. I honestly think that that little 15 year old girl can manage this team better than Jerry

Blanco out for Thole, which I assume is used to inject additional pop into the lineup, as Blanco is regarded generally as a better defensive character, except, you do it after you substituted Blanco out for Carter…for the same reason.
Except Carter isn’t a catcher…is batting 200 in his past 10 games, and you’ve essentially wasted a bench spot bat with decent pop for…a bat with decent pop…

Seemed like more than that to me. It could have just been the awfulness of those losses magnified their importance. Also, I would argue that Ollie lost us more than the 4 games he pitched. He lost us games that Tak pitched as well, for if he were decent Tak would have been in the BP where he belonged.

Some other moves too
Replace the Ollie/Maine starts with a Joel Pineiro type (he’s hurt now but had a 4 ERA through 130 IP, for $8 million). That’s +3 wins. It’s not a guaranteed championship but it’s definitely an improvement. And these aren’t complicated things — who didn’t see the Ollie/Maine problem coming into this season? And passing on Felipe Lopez and Kelly Johnson for peanuts because Castillo is still around.

To sum — Dickster has been a shocker but Niese has about met expectations, maybe slightly exceeded. He has a 4.11 FIP, preseason projections had him at 4.04-4.23.
We should be aiming higher, I agree. I think those small upgrades are a part of that though. Adding a win or two for cheap, while still spending big on stars because this team has the $$.

of competition with Frenchy, Ollie, Nieve etc, yet Cora is way behind
