steep price

that’s what Jeff Francoeur, Cora and cash?

I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson

Francoeur and Cora have a combined -0.4 WAR this season

Church and Crosby are worth -1.4 WAR

I would call the DBacks complete idiots for this deal, but they also got Carrasco, who is decent, so ehh.

but so far we could have upgrade rf

c, and possibly first base if they think it needs upgrading for two sub replacement players and cash…and instead we’re trying to trade Ollie and Castillo for a worse contract/player.

Why couldn't the Mets get Snyder?

He is actually good. Crosby and Church have sucked and Carrasco is pretty good, but a reliever. Would’ve Francoeur, Cora, and Feliciano got it done? According to MLBTR, the Pirates will also get a minor leaguer.

by EtSuKe on Jul 31, 2010 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

? that's what i'm saying

we could have gotten kearns and snyder for nothing at this point. Instead we want Carlos Zambrano and the 60 million owed.

Zambrano

Jon Heyman tweets that the Mets offered Perez and Castillo for Zambrano, but that the Cubs did not want Castillo. So offer them Perez and Francouer. The Mets could use a crazy person.

by ColoradoMetsFan on Jul 31, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

no no no

Zambrano’s contract is worse than Perez and Castillo combined. We just have to live with them for one more year. Zambrano would add another year.

Yeah, I'm sure the Cubs will love to save 17M even if if they got

lol

I posted the explanation for this under the fanshot for the Yankees acquiring Berkman… but it’s pretty simple. The Yankees are getting both these guys for EXTREMELY cheap and they’re both productive and better than who the Yankees have on the bench right now.

Kearns' .351 OBP is spectacular for a 4th outfielder that will be on the bench most of the time

Berkman’s got about a .371 OBP I believe and this has been a down year for him… we’ll see how it pans it but it should be ALL positive for the Yankees. Both of these players are just rentals, mind you. 270K for Kearns… can’t beat it!

What’s up with Thole? Why is it that scouts are saying one thing (back-up catcher, at best), but so far, his performance has been fairly impressive? Small sample size, I know, but going back to last season, and his time in the Minors, I’m not understanding why there’s such a gap in perception/performance.

Scouts are generally saying his defense is turrible.

By defense, they usually blarb something like “game calling” or “receiving and framing” pitches.
They are also making a counterpoint to his hot offensive production in SSS.

He might maintain a higher OBP compared to other catchers, but having doubles power. That’s overlooked, when you usually see low BA/OBP, high HR catchers out there (not necessarily high SLG).

by squid92 on Jul 31, 2010 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, the topic drift is the problem

Plus the fact that this is, you know, a baseball blog. I appreciate that people like to socialize, but maybe there are better places to talk about video games and boobies and so on? Every time one of these 1000-comment bizarre nonsense excursions happens, we’re discouraging baseball-focused readers from reading the site or taking what we have to say seriously.

by anonymous on Jul 31, 2010 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand your concern but...

I think this is a special case because what is there to talk about? Seriously?

The Mets made ZERO MOVES.

ZERO! So what else is there to discuss? Nothing but whatver comes to mind. Everyone here is very upset and is entitled to “cut loose” to make things a bit more entertaining and bring some levity to this blog.

Besides, you want a baseball blog? Once we have the Game Thread, there’s your baseball blog.

by BrockRocks on Jul 31, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

"So what else is there to discuss?" The rest of the baseball world.

There’s tons of interesting baseball discussion happening in this thread and the other trade-deadline ones. The rest of the nonsense here dilutes that, makes it harder and less fun to participate/read/follow, and frankly also is just boring as hell.

by anonymous on Jul 31, 2010 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

eh I don't see how it's boring

most people are fine with it

a few people go off topic for a little bit in a couple of threads and its fine, just ignore it if you need. if they set up an ’’off-topic" designated thread, people would still go off topic on some thread. usually game threads have a few off topic sections and it keeps people sane. no one is forcing you to come here and read this, just press z until you see baseball being discussed, thats what i do

I just think an "off-topic" designated thread would be fun.

sure, it wouldn’t catch everything, but it would be entertaining in its own right and could potentially free up some of the conversation from other posts. win-win, right? I honestly agree with anonymous in the fact that baseball related posts sometimes get too clogged with random shit. I, however, don’t agree with him in this specific example, since it IS an open thread. But that’s just semantics, really.

If it's an open thread, anything goes

If it’s a fanpost, fanshot, or some other specific thing, a little off-topic is fine, but too much, and you lose focus of the point of the thread. Open threads, I see them like a bunch of people hanging out and chatting- sometimes, tangents get walked down. As was mentioned, the off-topic stuff that I don’t care about, I ignore, and that’s that.

Yeah I hear that

But why not hate the media coverage instead of the player? He’s a good pitcher, doing his best and having success. It’s not like he’s Kenny Powers or Shane Victorino, being all arrogant and douchey about it. It’s fun to watch him pitch.

In summary, don’t hate the player, hate the game.

Yes, I would improve on the positions currently occupied

by Luis Castillo and Jeff Francoeur. If such a player is available, perhaps the Mets could improve at 1B and SP.

The problem is the Mets think they have 2B and RF “covered” with the players they currently have. Because Minaya has no clue about relative value of players and how to make marginal improvements.

ERA+ is barely an improvement over ERA

and Perez put up an ERA+ of 120 a few years ago too.

And more import.ant even if he’s not as bad as perez he’s owed twice as much money. Which more than makes up for the difference in badness. We’re much better off just living with perez at 13 million for one more year than having to live with Zambrano for 34 million for two more years. it just makes no sense to add a year of crap at a higher dollar cost. As was discussed in a few threads earlier:

Joe Saunders = Mike Pelfrey (who is better, but…)
Pat Corbin = Robert Carson
Rafael Rodriguez = Eddie Kunz
Theoretical PTBN

Corbin is a 20 year old leftie in A ball who seems mediocre. Carson is a year older, also in A ball, who has similar stats.

Rafael Rodriguez, he’s had a little time in the Majors (and it wasn’t that impressive), and his Minor League numbers are mediocre, if not a little up and down. Eddie Kunz is…Eddie Kunz.

I think more than absolutely anything

i’m pissed about austin kearns. A fucking 70 some point increase in wOBA from our right fielder for 250 k, and we apparently never even looked into him.

he’d be a huge huge upgrade for no cost

um he's a career .340 wOBA player

over 3800 PAs. He had like 1.5 bad years struggling with injures and a career low BABIP over like 500 PA"s,. He was an above average hitter for most of his career.

yeah, this is what sticks out to me too

At least judging by the rumor mill, the only thing Omar spent real time on at the deadline was trying to dump the big albatross contracts, rather than trying to do a smart “sell high” move or two.

by anonymous on Jul 31, 2010 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

It's like

Omar can’t do two things at once. It seems as if he focuses on one move & doesn’t look in other areas to improve the team.

We joked around about that during the off-season

but I think there’s enough of a sample size to basically confirm it as a truism, that Omar can’t deal with more than one possible deal at a time.

Couple waiver moves the Mets could make if they get hot an go on a winning streak

Manny might be available Its unlikely the Dodgers will let him go to a possible wild card team

Millwood will be available he is terrible but he will be available

Rich Harden Good pitcher when healthy

Their will be many relievers available

A bat or two wouldnt hurt

trades???

Don’t actually know what to believe? According to papers and blogs, these other teams were requesting a lot more from the mets than they took from other teams. That tells me it is one of two things: either the mets are lying about the requests to save face fror doing nothing, or omar is just no good at negotiating the price downward. I vote both. Jerry is a charlatan and Omar is a buffoon. That is my mantra.

It says we don’t care. Or we’re too stupid to care. Or we’re so clueless, we think you the fans are too stupid to care. Too many players on this team with no exit strategy.

by ColoradoMetsFan on Jul 31, 2010 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Obviously there were players out there who we could have acquired for next year, but giving up prospects for a rental at this point would have been insane.

Agree that prospects for rentals makes no sense

Although I’m sure there are considerable no-trade clause considerations in place, I would consider dismantling this team. However, I would not want the current GM/manager tandem to shape a new roster.

That Wilpon. What a scam artist.

Remember that happy bullshit about how much cheaper midseason pickups were, and that was part of the reason nothing was done about the rotation in the offseason? All of that so as not to have to shell out a few bucks before the season started, say, on a pitcher who might have halved the team’s current deficit in the standing?

It’s the same crap here. This team wasn’t going anywhere near Zambrano’s (or anyone else’s) salary.

Get ready for an ugly offseason, folks. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see the Mets’ payroll stay below 130m next year, which means the 2011 season is going to look a hell of a lot like the 2010 season. Bastards.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
