Pirates traded Ryan Church and Bobby Crosby to the D-Backs
For Chris Snyder.
by James Kannengieser on Jul 31, 2010 10:51 AM EDT reply actions
steep price
that’s what Jeff Francoeur, Cora and cash?
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
Francoeur and Cora have a combined -0.4 WAR this season
Church and Crosby are worth -1.4 WAR
I would call the DBacks complete idiots for this deal, but they also got Carrasco, who is decent, so ehh.
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
well Snyder is probably a pure cash deal for them
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
cash dump*
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
but so far we could have upgrade rf
c, and possibly first base if they think it needs upgrading for two sub replacement players and cash…and instead we’re trying to trade Ollie and Castillo for a worse contract/player.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
Why couldn't the Mets get Snyder?
He is actually good. Crosby and Church have sucked and Carrasco is pretty good, but a reliever. Would’ve Francoeur, Cora, and Feliciano got it done? According to MLBTR, the Pirates will also get a minor leaguer.
? that's what i'm saying
we could have gotten kearns and snyder for nothing at this point. Instead we want Carlos Zambrano and the 60 million owed.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
Zambrano
Jon Heyman tweets that the Mets offered Perez and Castillo for Zambrano, but that the Cubs did not want Castillo. So offer them Perez and Francouer. The Mets could use a crazy person.
by ColoradoMetsFan on Jul 31, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions
no no no
Zambrano’s contract is worse than Perez and Castillo combined. We just have to live with them for one more year. Zambrano would add another year.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
For the Mets to accept the trade, they would probably get moneys back also
to offset the differences in salary.
Yeah, I'm sure the Cubs will love to save 17M even if if they got
worse talent. The Mets must’ve been asking for a significant amount of money also to kill it.
call me crazy
but I’d rather have Perez and Frenchy….GAG. I want no part of Big Z.

Yankees are gluttonous
They really need Berkman and Kearns? Adam Dunn is still available.

lol
I posted the explanation for this under the fanshot for the Yankees acquiring Berkman… but it’s pretty simple. The Yankees are getting both these guys for EXTREMELY cheap and they’re both productive and better than who the Yankees have on the bench right now.

Good for the Yankees

Kearns' .351 OBP is spectacular for a 4th outfielder that will be on the bench most of the time
Berkman’s got about a .371 OBP I believe and this has been a down year for him… we’ll see how it pans it but it should be ALL positive for the Yankees. Both of these players are just rentals, mind you. 270K for Kearns… can’t beat it!

new understanding of glue and chemistry
the glue that holds the team’s chemistry together
The Mets have chemistry without Francoeur but its not glued together and it should be obvious that chemistry that is not glued together is worthless.

MLBTR says Mets denied a Pirates offer of Octavio Dotel for Robert Carson
I’d have accepted

Yeah same thing I thought
I get that Omar doesn’t want to trade prospects, but Carson is more of a fringe player.
Trying to believe is my full-time occupation.
Seriously, why bother
Carson is not that great a prospect, but Dotel is not that great a pitcher. I daresay he’s been pretty awful this year.
Dotel is a retread...

Since his name is tossed around a lot in trade talks
What’s up with Thole? Why is it that scouts are saying one thing (back-up catcher, at best), but so far, his performance has been fairly impressive? Small sample size, I know, but going back to last season, and his time in the Minors, I’m not understanding why there’s such a gap in perception/performance.

lack of power or speed and not great defense
are what i would guess. he still seems acceptable defensively and a good singles/doubles hitter, who if smart on the basepaths, could be one of the more productive hitters as a catcher
I like Ike, I hate Jerry
Never understood that either
He reminds me a lot of Jason Kendall or Paul LoDuca, and they’re considered 2 of the better catchers of the last generation. Perfect #8 hitter IMO.
Scouts are generally saying his defense is turrible.
By defense, they usually blarb something like “game calling” or “receiving and framing” pitches.
They are also making a counterpoint to his hot offensive production in SSS.
He might maintain a higher OBP compared to other catchers, but having doubles power. That’s overlooked, when you usually see low BA/OBP, high HR catchers out there (not necessarily high SLG).
In lobby campaign for Chris Carter.
That's where I'm getting so confused with the differential between what is said, and what is actually happening.
Again, small sample size (last season, Minors, and this season), but defensively, he’s been good (in my eyes). He’s been catching Dickey, so that’s a feat in and of itself, with the knuckleball and all.

Also for some reason every team asks for him in a trade.
I guess scouts like him and prospect geeks don’t.
i'm not sure that means they value him that much
it could mean they don’t think he’s that great of a prospect since they’re asking for him in trades for mediocre players.

maybe Eric had a point with the idea of "Off-Topic Convos" Fanshots.
Obviously, sometimes we like to talk about stuff other than baseball. Since we’re all relatively familiar with each other here, we like to discuss these topics with each other. No problem, but maybe like, weekly threads to focus some of the chaos?
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
The problem is that there's nothing worth talking about since the Mets DID NOTHING!
If they would’ve done SOMETHING, we would’ve been talking about it.
yeah, the topic drift is the problem
Plus the fact that this is, you know, a baseball blog. I appreciate that people like to socialize, but maybe there are better places to talk about video games and boobies and so on? Every time one of these 1000-comment bizarre nonsense excursions happens, we’re discouraging baseball-focused readers from reading the site or taking what we have to say seriously.
I understand your concern but...
I think this is a special case because what is there to talk about? Seriously?
The Mets made ZERO MOVES.
ZERO! So what else is there to discuss? Nothing but whatver comes to mind. Everyone here is very upset and is entitled to “cut loose” to make things a bit more entertaining and bring some levity to this blog.
Besides, you want a baseball blog? Once we have the Game Thread, there’s your baseball blog.
"So what else is there to discuss?" The rest of the baseball world.
There’s tons of interesting baseball discussion happening in this thread and the other trade-deadline ones. The rest of the nonsense here dilutes that, makes it harder and less fun to participate/read/follow, and frankly also is just boring as hell.
eh I don't see how it's boring
like I said above, I didn’t read any of it and just scrolled right past without it bothering me at all. I don’t see what the problem is.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
personally, I'd rather discuss boobies.

i mean im pretty young, if you wanna call fresh outta undergrad young
i just feel like, anyone who is an asshole on the internet on some blog like that or this one has no respect for other people because they feel like they are on the internet and can talk shit to someone because the person they talking shit to isnt there to kick their ass. i mean, this is like when my friends would play game with that xbox headset on and i would hear pre-pubescent dumbasses cursing my friends and their moms and their sisters out because they just killed them in some dumb game. i dont know, maybe im wrong, it just seems like the same mentality over at metsblog. and considering matt cerrone is apparently a 12 year old (thank you fatcessa), i wouldnt be surprised

I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
and that's why I don't hang out at 90% of all blogs
Smart, well-moderated web communities — say, Metafilter, or the DailyKos empire where SBNation has its roots — have mod policies and community self-moderation that enforce staying on-topic to some degree.
Do they discuss baseball over there?
If they do, then you can go there where you won’t have to see our “boring” posts and conversations.
Okay, I get it
I see that your position is that you have the sacred god-given right to post whatever off-topic crap you please because you say so. Now could the rest of us have a conversation about whether that is something this community should continue to allow?
Did I say that? I'm just stating what you can do to alleviate your "boredom"
That’s all.
If all you can do is complain, then I don’t know what to say.
most people are fine with it
a few people go off topic for a little bit in a couple of threads and its fine, just ignore it if you need. if they set up an ’’off-topic" designated thread, people would still go off topic on some thread. usually game threads have a few off topic sections and it keeps people sane. no one is forcing you to come here and read this, just press z until you see baseball being discussed, thats what i do
I like Ike, I hate Jerry
I just think an "off-topic" designated thread would be fun.
sure, it wouldn’t catch everything, but it would be entertaining in its own right and could potentially free up some of the conversation from other posts. win-win, right? I honestly agree with anonymous in the fact that baseball related posts sometimes get too clogged with random shit. I, however, don’t agree with him in this specific example, since it IS an open thread. But that’s just semantics, really.
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
If it's an open thread, anything goes
If it’s a fanpost, fanshot, or some other specific thing, a little off-topic is fine, but too much, and you lose focus of the point of the thread. Open threads, I see them like a bunch of people hanging out and chatting- sometimes, tangents get walked down. As was mentioned, the off-topic stuff that I don’t care about, I ignore, and that’s that.

There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
fine maybe
but Snyder would be a pretty significant upgrade. I mean Castillo is fine for 2nd but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be trying to upgrade. if an upgrade is available for virtually nothing why not upgrade?
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
You're not seriously comparing Castillo to Thole, are you?
Castillo is an abomination. Thole is a decent catcher that deserves a chance to play everyday.
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
Thole can play everyday in AAA
at this point it’s not that likely that he’ll be putting up a .330-.340 wOBA which is what Snyder would provide.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
Blanco is posting a .305 wOBA at this point
Snyder .338. That’s a massive upgrade at no cost.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
Lilly is traded already
I don’t know what else I’d do. Add a 2nd baseman? Kelly Johnson? Paul Maholm maybe, the Pirates love to trade.
by James Kannengieser on Jul 31, 2010 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, I would improve on the positions currently occupied
by Luis Castillo and Jeff Francoeur. If such a player is available, perhaps the Mets could improve at 1B and SP.
The problem is the Mets think they have 2B and RF “covered” with the players they currently have. Because Minaya has no clue about relative value of players and how to make marginal improvements.
by JohnPeterson on Jul 31, 2010 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Alternatively,
I would be dumping Luis Castillo on whomever would take him. I’m not sure the Mets shouldn’t be sellers, not buyers.
by JohnPeterson on Jul 31, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions
I think its really over for us
this year and the only moves I want them to make is trade players I don’t want them to keep in the long term and try and get some prospects and shed some salary.
I’d also like them to just cut Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo. Right now.

where all these guys got moved for no prospects? We said don’t overpay in prospects, most of these guys cost non-prospects/crappy players to acquire. The Yankees got Berkman and Kearns without giving up one prospect, Snyder was acquired for no prospects.

Zambrano was good in 2009
There’s also this thing called a down year
http://www.doublebobbyjones.com/ -Double Bobby Jones: a Mets blog
um he wasn't good
he was decent, and no where near worth the money he was being paid. He’s been steadily declining for 3 years while his contract has increased. He’d be a 2 WAR player making about the same money guys like Oswalt and Halladay make.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
119 ERA+ is pretty solid
definitely not Perez-esque
http://www.doublebobbyjones.com/ -Double Bobby Jones: a Mets blog
ERA+ is barely an improvement over ERA
and Perez put up an ERA+ of 120 a few years ago too.
And more import.ant even if he’s not as bad as perez he’s owed twice as much money. Which more than makes up for the difference in badness. We’re much better off just living with perez at 13 million for one more year than having to live with Zambrano for 34 million for two more years. it just makes no sense to add a year of crap at a higher dollar cost. When we can spend the money on someone who is actually useful and not insane.

As was discussed in a few threads earlier:
Joe Saunders = Mike Pelfrey (who is better, but…)
Pat Corbin = Robert Carson
Rafael Rodriguez = Eddie Kunz
Theoretical PTBN
Corbin is a 20 year old leftie in A ball who seems mediocre. Carson is a year older, also in A ball, who has similar stats.
Rafael Rodriguez, he’s had a little time in the Majors (and it wasn’t that impressive), and his Minor League numbers are mediocre, if not a little up and down. Eddie Kunz is…Eddie Kunz.

http://www.doublebobbyjones.com/ -Double Bobby Jones: a Mets blog
But reports are it IS a middle of the line guy
So that’d be someone like Duda or Tejada or Capn Kirk.
John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.
kirk is better than those first two

i mean, PRETTY good.
But the difference between Pelfrey and Saunders eclipses that difference.

he's an 18 year old
with 77 innings in his career.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
um why?
Haren is a massive upgrade, and most middle guys are guys who project to be bench players or AAAA fodder.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
I'm not keen on giving up prospects for an upgrade to give us 84 wins this year instead of 79 or 80

Haren
would be here for at least 3 seasons, & Pelfrey isn’t that good to begin with.

pelfrey is so unpredictable right now
he could be the great pitcher we had at the beginning of the year for the next 3 years or the mediocre guy we are used to, more likely mediocre though
I like Ike, I hate Jerry
I think it's more likely he'll end up being a
4.30-4.50 FIP guy who pitches around 200 innings. So probably around an average player.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
Maybe
If Pelfrey pitches more like his first half self, that’s good for around a 4 WAR or so. If he pitched better, maybe more. I like Pelfrey, but I don’t really forsee that happening. That’d be nice, though.

for a guy who’s under contract for 3 more years, and would make us not have to chase mediocre starters in the market for the same price.
I want Jerry Manuel fired now, not three years from now. That is my stance.- John Peterson
Carson and Kunz are really helping the team, right?
Haren > Pelfrey, and I’d be willing to give up a mid-level prospect to get it done. In effect, it’d be Pelfrey and mid-level prospect for Haren, with some change in the no-name people who never are really going to amount to much.

Manny might be available Its unlikely the Dodgers will let him go to a possible wild card team

Rich Harden Good pitcher when healthy

trades???
Don’t actually know what to believe? According to papers and blogs, these other teams were requesting a lot more from the mets than they took from other teams. That tells me it is one of two things: either the mets are lying about the requests to save face fror doing nothing, or omar is just no good at negotiating the price downward. I vote both. Jerry is a charlatan and Omar is a buffoon. That is my mantra.

That Wilpon. What a scam artist.
Remember that happy bullshit about how much cheaper midseason pickups were, and that was part of the reason nothing was done about the rotation in the offseason? All of that so as not to have to shell out a few bucks before the season started, say, on a pitcher who might have halved the team’s current deficit in the standing?
It’s the same crap here. This team wasn’t going anywhere near Zambrano’s (or anyone else’s) salary.
Get ready for an ugly offseason, folks. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see the Mets’ payroll stay below 130m next year, which means the 2011 season is going to look a hell of a lot like the 2010 season. Bastards.
