John Sickels answering questions about Met prospects yesterday

So John Sickels over at minor league ball had a open forum for all questions yesterday. For anyone interested but doesn't have time or patience to sift through all the material there I've copied and pasted all the Met related questions I could find.

What are your opinions on Jefry Marte and Cesar Puello

Both are young but have struggled to some extent in Savannah this year. Are they still legit prospects, and if so what are some possible comps?

by wrightnumber5 on Jul 7, 2010 12:44 PM PDT reply actions

eh

Not wild about either of them. Both still prospects due to age and tools….Marte power potential, Puello speed, but both have a lot to learn about hitting. Grade C/with potential for both of them.

Wil Myers/Wilmer Flores

What are their potential ceilings? Both top 30 prospects?

myers

Love both these guys. Both could be Top 20 by end of year. Ceilings of All-Stars, which doesn’t mean they will get there of course.

sorry john, but my membership just activated and i been waiting all day

do you think thole has a future as a starter? or will his lack of experience and HR power cause him to be at best a backup

stats, they are seriously never in Francoeur's favor

thole

I don’t see Thole as a long-term starter for a good team.

Brad Holt

What’s the deal? I’ve heard of injuries, loss of velocity. He doesn’t seem to be able to pitch well even in the league (High A) he pitched well in last year.

holt

Command gone….purely speculative, but a lot of times this happens due to an underlying injury of some kind.

Lucas Duda

Has he turned himself into any kind of a prospect with his power display this year, does he have any future on a major league roster, etc…

duda

well you really have to hit to make it as a first baseman or corner outfielder. he’s made progress..much better BB/K this year in addition to more power. Probably a pinchhitter/platoon guy in the end.

Aderlin Rodriguez

5 homeruns in 50 some at bats as an 18 year old in Kingsport. Early thoughts on him?

John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.

rod

Well I’d like more than 15 games, lol.

Obviously his power is very impressive, and his plate discipline has been decent in limited action. Defense still needs work. I gave him a Grade C in the book and I can see that as a C+/B- by end of season, with breakthrough possible in ’11.

Matt Harvey

When he signs, how quickly do you think the Mets will push him the the bigs?

by Archie A on Jul 7, 2010 10:03 AM PDT reply actions

harvey

Depends on if he shows any command, which is an open question. The Mets often rush people too fast and Harvey could get to the majors before he’s ready, like what happened with Pelfrey.

Greg Vaughn's kid

Where does he rank in the Mets prospect mix?

vaugh

Way way too early to tell that. Want to see some pro numbers. Has the tools to be a top 20 in the system.

Jenrry Mejia or Wilmer Flores

If the Mets decide to get Cliff Lee and have to give up one of them, which one do you think they should give up, and why?

mejia

I’d be more willing to part with Mejia given the higher risk inherint with pitchers

thanks

that’s how I feel as well, TINSTAAPP and all that, but a lot of Mets fans feel differently.

Who is the better prospect?

Ruben Tejada or Reese Havens?

hmm

toughie since havens can’t seem to stay healthy. I say Havens has higher “peak ability” but Tejada could end up having a longer career.
