Rockies 6, Mets 2: The Horror, The Horror
The highest leverage situation in this game featured Manny Acostalypse Now facing Melvin Mora with the bases loaded, two outs and the Mets leading 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Rockies manager Jim Tracy instructed Mora to terminate the Mets with extreme prejudice -- and Melvin did, rocketing a grand slam into the left field seats. Jerry Manuel's advice to The Acostalypse was apparently "allow the bomb, exterminate my employment". Meanwhile, handsomely paid relief pitcher Francisco Rodriguez chilled out in the bullpen, despite the save situation. Maybe Frankie was tired from his 18 pitch outing last night, who knows. But if he was available, he should have been pitching. From after the game:
Jon Niese enjoyed another brilliant outing -- seven innings, five hits, one run, seven strikeouts, no walks. He now has the second best xFIP in the Mets' rotation.
The Mets' lineup struck out a bunch of times (eleven), walked few times (once) and failed to score a run after Angel Pagan's two-run homer in the first inning. David Wright struck out four times, three of them coming against a soft tossing southpaw. His 2010 wOBA is now lower than it was in 2009. Since going 2-2 in the All Star Game, David is hitting .196/.252/.326 in 103 plate appearances. Bad news bears, people. He needs a day off tomorrow and probably some intense swing coaching. For starters, maybe he should stand closer to the plate.
Jerry named Hisanori Takahashi his new eighth inning toy but pulled him tonight for Acosta after Tak2 allowed two baserunners and recorded two outs in the penultimate frame. Show some confidence in your man, Jer. Give him a chance. And while you're at it, put him back in the rotation. Tak2 is better than Pat Misch, Raul Valdes or whoever else might start on Saturday.
The rubber game of the series starts at 12:10 on Thursday, with Johan Santana and Jason Hammel squaring off.

Tomorrow's Text question: "Should Wright and Beltran give up and retire?"
Seriously, wtf is up with them.
I think because we suffered an Acostalypse, that means the sun will not come up tomorrow, or even for an entire nuclear winter, therefore Jerry will be fired. Yahoo!
I don't understand why no one
in the organization has told him to stand closer to the plate…

I've heard Wright say
something like “as the season goes along, sometimes I’m closer to the plate, and other times I’m farther away, I’m not sure why that is.” Maybe that’s why a lot of times you’re a great hitter, and sometimes you are awful.
i wonder if there's a coach, maybe one that concentrates on hitting, who could get him to consistently stand in one FUCKING PLACE

Out here in LA
They do an onstage version of Point Break. It’s hilarious. They take a guy out of the audience to play Keanu, since anyone can act as well as him. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting LA or San Fran.
I've never laughed so hard
I have seen it twice. The dude who plays Swayze nails it and looks like him, and the guy who plays Roach is another dead ringer. And the Gary Busey is great, too. They give you a pancho, because the audience gets soaked during the surf scenes.

"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"

i HATED him in 08, i remember sending a text to my buddy referring to him as “the abortion.” but, he was incredibly unlucky that year as were we when Maine AND Wagner went down. Tatis too. I tho9ught 08 was def the year, with the season jose/voltron/dubs had and the insane 2nd half of gado. Make the playoffs and we had 2 starters that were dominating going in with Johan and Pelf. Move one person to the pen to help it back there and go 3 man rotation. That reminds me, Johans performance in the 2nd to last game is truly under-appreciated. The man had surgery on his fucking knee a day or two after they were eliminated. Were we to get in, he’d be in “the bloody sock” discussion, but Schoenweis, Ayala and our offense decided not to show up. But guess who did? that chokey choker with that huge 2 run HR, and he also hit that GS against Gregg and the marlins in the 9th inning when we were trailing all game. I really loved that season. 06 and 08 Jose was just such a monster

Damn. I thought we got rid of Castro.
by MookieTheCat on Aug 12, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions
actually I disagree completely
First, playing time factors into who was a better team. The Mets lineup was better than the Phillies lineup, in part because they were healthier.
But, about depth: the Mets had 9 everyday players worth at least 1.0 WAR, the Phillies had 6. The Mets had 15 everyday players with a WAR >0, the Phillies had 12. The Phillies had more players with negative WAR, and more players with a WAR worse than -0.2.
The fact stands that the Mets lineup and starting rotation were 8 games better than the Phillies, but that advantage was completely negated by a bullpen that was 7.9 wins worse. In aggregate the teams were almost exact equals, and the Phillies capitalized.
2009 Did Not Happen
I can't wait
in a couple years when the Pirates under Huntington are contenders with the Reds in the central. The cards will fall out eventually, too much dependence on 2 pitchers, 1 with tons of injury history and is aging, and the Holliday/Pujols (if they sign him) are gonna hamper that payroll bad.

that lineup only looks good
if Beltran and Bay are productive, and Tejada is not an automatic out, and Reyes gets on base more. And they still don’t have a true 8th inning setup man.
by secret defense on Aug 11, 2010 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions
And Pagan keeps it up...
And Wright does not regress (not that I’m saying this is likely but), and Thole catches his stride, annd Beltran knees don’t hurt him too much, and no more than one of the above is injured at any one time, or for any extended period unless an approriate sub is around.
I am in serious Debby Downer mode, but I think the greatest weakness is the—drumroll please—lack of depth. Shocking and unique analysis, I know, but looking at the front 8 misses a lot of the weakness with this year’s team, and those disappointing teams of years past. Do we have a shot? Sure, but things need to be remedied in the offseason.

My friend from Pittsburgh is (or should I say "was") a Pirates fan
he recently had his second bad experience at PNC this season (with ballpark security/ushers, not with whats on the field – that’s a given) and he told me he was officially switching his allegiances to the Mets. I told him, that while no one can compare to the suckitude of the Pirates, jumping ships to the Mets is far from a pain-free existence.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
As much as I can respect this reasoning...
This is just not done. You cannot switch teams, especially within the same league. This is girl who likes to wear tight t shirts and scream drunkenly behavior, not baseball fan behavior. Bill Simmons wrote a great thing on this a number of years ago, outlining situations where an exception may apply (such as when your team moves to another city). In my mind if I switched due to negative situations I’d be a Yankees fan. Mets fans cannot accept this guy into the fold. It is a signn of poor moral character in my mind, and I bet every Cubs fan out there agrees with me. You can switch political parties, you can switch allegiance from America to Iran, but you do not, ever (with the Simmons exceptions), switch your allegiance to another baseball team.
by MookieTheCat on Aug 12, 2010 2:28 AM EDT up reply actions
Well he's really from LI but moved to outside Pittsburgh when he was like 5
(funny/weird story: I met him freshmen year at Hofstra. He and his family used to live on LI and our Grandpas both worked for Grumman in Bethpage during the same time period. Small world). He’s not switching allegiances just because the Pirates are loosing; he’s changing teams because not only has he had to endure the pathetic-ness of the franchise, but they aren’t even dedicated to giving fans a good experience at the ballpark. Generally, I agree, your team is your team; but extenuating circumstances do exist IMO.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
Sorry man...
I empathize, really I do. I think we can all agree that switching teams due to poor performance is wrong, but switching teams due to poor performance and slights is also worng, esp if your team is one with the history of the Pirates. Let me put it this way. I was a Mets fan when I was 12, and will be for the rest of my life. The team you support when you’re 12 is your team for life. That’s it.. Before girls and standardized tests and real life, you have your baseball team. The pain only makes that later succees the sweeter. I love my wife to death, but she knows that the Mets have a weird thing over my soul, and she knows that when I woke her up to witness Reyes’ cycle in 06 it was a sign of love that I wanted to share the moment with her, though I called my dad and woke him up to share it with him as well. Baseball is a strange thing to me, that brigdes and defies family and friends. You cannot switch allegiances unless you either have not really cared or are in pain. But I imagine that if your buddy found the Bucs in a playoff chase the sense in his stomach would override his newfound support for the Mets. This is both right and why you can’t switch teams.
by MookieTheCat on Aug 12, 2010 2:56 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree with you 99% of the time.
I might allow an exception if you’re a Lions or Royals fan. At least the Pirates seem to have a competent GM.

he has an old school Mets hat (well, old-school to 22 year olds) which he knows he never bought so, if you want to get technical about it, the Mets were in all likelihood his “first” team but the move to Pittsburgh interrupted his developing an attachment beyond that hat and whatever else his pre-5 year old self may have had. This is also a guy who stuck with a pitiful Penguins team so it’s not like he has a history of jumping ship.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
I admire your defense of your friend....
But, my brother was a Yankees fan and still is. My first team was surely the Yankees. Life would be so much easier if I was able to follow in those footsteps today, but I can’t. Sad for me.

I normally disagree
but, I also think that if a pattern of abuse is in place, there’s no reason to stay. If you follow a team that has been as bad as the Pirates for as long as the Pirates, it’s obvious that they really just don’t care about you (or, really, themselves) at all. And, then, if they are going out of their way to make your experience at the ballpark miserable, despite the fact that you are spending money trying to support a team that barely supports itself? I don’t know – as much as I dislike sports bigamy, I also think there’s a point where you need to get out of the relationship. It’s like a marriage in that respect – you don’t divorce your wife because you had a fight over the remote control, or even if it was something more serious than that. But if your wife does nothing but scream at you, doesn’t have a job, doesn’t help with the kids – well, I think sometimes you just need to start fresh.
2009 Did Not Happen
I see your point...
But I think some of the elder statesmen on here might point to the Mets’ Payson years in the 70s as being similar. The point is that someone might buy the Pirates one day and turn it around, or they might make some great draft picks and have a team that gels just right. A remote chance, sure, but stranger things have happened…

You make a good case, and generally I would agree
but he’s more disheartened about the off the field stuff (fan experience at the ball park, ect.) than he is about the team on the field. Like I said, this is a guy who stuck with and found ways to love the scrubs that the Penguins were throwing out there before Crosby, Malkin, and Fleury arrived. He can deal with shit results. It’s the not caring about the fans who stick by the team despite the shit results that was the last straw for him. And honestly, even if they were to turn it around, I don’t see him suddenly jumping back aboard unless there were some serious changes to the way they treat their fans.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
What exactly happened at the stadium?
I’ll reserve on this until the facts are in.

I don't know all the details as I wasn't there
but him and like 5-7 friends were in the bleacher seats (or whatever they call the cheapest OF seats there). They had had a few and were talking and joking amongst themselves. Then an usher/security officer (don’t know which) comes over and without offering a warning tells them they have to leave the park. No one was drinking under age and this guy (and the friends of his that I have met) are generally polite and considerate people who I would not believe to be obnoxious drunks or rowdy (if they were even drunk). This was the first time they had anything this severe happen to them, but there had been other more minor things apparently over the last few years about how fans are treated that didn’t rub him the right way.
Save Jenrry Mejia!
right
and in that case, you should kick yourself from ditching the team and should NOT be allowed to jump back on the bandwagon. It’s a similar situation to dumping that crazy bitch wife, only for her to go to a therapist and get her head straight and lose 100 pounds to be sexier than she ever was. Doesn’t matter – you made your choice. But it’s a choice you shouldn’t be criticized for making, IMO.
2009 Did Not Happen
he can take my spot
if we do an official swapping of allegiances with like a contract drawn out will that be cool mookie.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
Seriously....
Fuck this organization. I wasnt even home to watch and I’m still beyond pissed that Jerry put that fucking lineup out there, that Hojo is still hitting coach, that Hojo is still hitting coach, that Hojo is still hitting coach, and that Dubs hasnt figured out that he is standing too far away from the plate. Seriously WTF? Does Hojo ever study tape with Wright? Does anyone on the team study tape, or actually watch the games as they go on?
I don’t blame Hojo singlehandedly, but what the hell does a hitting coach do?
Omar and Jerry, dumbest tandem in baseball.
He clearly is too far from the plate
but he is still swinging over and through a lot of pitches. The problem is deeper. It is not physical reach, it is deep-seated doubt.
Well, since we're not getting into the playoffs
Going down in a flaming blaze of stupidity and dysfunction is for the best. It’ll get Jerry gone, at the least.
i am truly dreading
a 79-82 win team. mediocrity is worse than outright awful rebuilding. It may give jerry another shot

yeah I can handle awful or spectacular
but middle ground is so boring, especially when theres no escape in sight
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

Criss Angel is such a bastard
This stuff is all reruns except for one stunt he does at the end which is completely bogus.
Consequences will never be the same.
So F-mart was brought up to platoon in the OF what a fucking joke
if he’s up and I’m against this because he needs to leave AAA behind him with a solid yr injury free. Then why is he brought up to start 2-3 times a week. Jerry Mismanaging the bullpen, the line-up, the set-up role, The Bench players, The catcher’s and now mismanaging the OF “platoon” situation. Good job Jerry How the fuck did he get a job managing let alone in one of the biggest sports markets ever. Meet the Mess Met the Mess come along and beat the Mess. I give up.
I can't wait until this asshole Manuel is fired
Not because he’s incompetent, but because he’s such an awful human being that bad things deserve to happen to him.
Keep making terrible decisions and blaming them on everyone else.
What a day for the Mets. An epic Wall Street Journal article, a Jerryball-engineered bullpen meltdown in which the new “eighth-inning guy” who should be starting gets pulled for a scrub while the best reliever sits, and then that aforementioned best reliever gets questioned by police regarding a fight with his father-in-law.
I love this team.
I lobby the next picture involves a Jersey Shore fist pump gif.
That would really hammer the point home about our team that they’re just as horrendous as the sight of suburban white people and old ladies fist pumping at a baseball game (I should know, because I always see it every Saturday/Fireworks night at Trenton).
2010: Year of the Grission...Or Not!
In My World, There Is No Such Thing As Off-Topic!
The correct phrase is actually
“have lobby” as in you “have lobby” for this job-
Let's not make that picture a thing.
It’s just unpleasant.
I use this picture on work emails all the time now

ok 1st off why did he remove taka out the game and put in manny? because you want to keep k-rod fresh? in the word of mlb the show rex hutler come on! shake yourself! man lets go! i am so tired of jerry manuel i just want the season to end so he can go on his way i dont care who is the manager as long that it isnt jerry is game calling has lost us so many games i mean i cant even count them we prob be the wildcard leader right now (maybe) and i mean hojo what the hell man move wright back in the box all the pitchers just know to throw him on the outside this team is very sad to watch….
lets go mets?
didn't all the Bernazard BS hit the fan
around this time last year?
Again like I said...
a Mets pitcher can throw a no-hitter (hah!) and strike out 23 batters and somehow manage to lose 1 to 0……blech.
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
i feel bad for all mets starting pitchers mostly johan santana he is wasting his prime cause jerry doesnt want him to finishe the game because he threw 100 pitches? memo to jerry: he is our ace!!! we gave him a huge contract to do that exact thing. and as for omar why couldnt you do a trade dont give me “oh they wanted niese, davis etc.” if the filthies can get oswalt for an injured happ? and throw in why the hell cant you? lol and to top it off fred wilpon thinks his son is doing a “great” job really? only the mets huh? i just want them to do a couples of no brainers for once in there life.
1. release the dead weight castillo and ollie if the royal can release guillen and the tigers can release willis you can too
2. get a manager to do exactly that “manage” because obviously jerry cant do the simples things like how to manage a bullpen and a line up
3. get a hitting coach to teach wright that its ok to move in you wont die
3 very easy thing dont ya think?
Honestly
It is time to start rooting against this team.
CHANGE!
HOPE!
YES WE CAN!
OCD comment
Had to make it 200. No one else fuck it up, either.
Consequences will never be the same.
