There's gonna be some massive freakout by some Mets player during this game

Any Opinions on K-Rod?
I was excited because I thought he assaulted Jerry then became distraught when I found out it was his father, but then I was corrected and I was just disappointed that he assaulted his father in law in the end.
by HELLYEAHGARYOAK on Aug 12, 2010 11:48 AM EDT reply actions
I think his actions were reprehensible
he hit an older man, a family member, and in front of children too. Absolutely ridiculous.
http://www.doublebobbyjones.com/ -Double Bobby Jones: a Mets blog
Yeah his father-in-law just mysteriously got hurt in the Mets family room
http://www.doublebobbyjones.com/ -Double Bobby Jones: a Mets blog
Because the father-in-law is older
K-Rod couldn’t have been provoked? (1) Think. (2) Judge.
You just don't want to pass judgment because he's a Met
it’s the same as the Johan thing. People need to just admit that what these guys did was very wrong.

Off topic-ish
I strongly believe, for whatever reason, Jon Niese will throw a no hitter. Hopefully as a Met…
Ryan Miller was the true MVP.

Fred: "Who's pitching today?"
Jeff: “Johan”
Fred: “Wasn’t he arrested for assault?”
Jeff: “No that’s K-Rod. Johan was only sued for assault”
Fred: “Is that guy who always strikes out on 3 pitches playing?”
Jeff: “Which one, the guy who strikes out with a smile on his face or the guy who strikes out with a blank look on his face?”
Fred: “Either one”
Jeff: “No, we have other guys at 3rd base and right field”
Fred: “Who’s in center?”
Jeff: “Carlos”
Fred: “Is he in for his offense or his defense?”
Jeff: “Neither”
Fred: “Who’s our 8th inning guy?”
Jeff: “Tak”
Fred: “Didn’t he give up a grand slam yesterday?”
Jeff: “No, that’s our late 8th inning guy, not our early 8th inning guy”
Fred: “Is Bay playing”
Jeff: “No he’s got a concussion”
Fred: “I thought we traded him”
Jeff: “No that was last years concussion guy not this years”
Fred: “Maybe we should look into selling the team”
Jeff: “I’ve been trying, there’s no bid”

Turns out, the NCAA didn’t need to do anything. Thomas was oh-so-politely informed by NBA commissioner David Stern that the NBA doesn’t allow league personnel to have any contact with players who aren’t eligible for the NBA draft. From the AP:
“We have been informed by the Knicks that Isiah Thomas has rescinded his consulting agreement with the team. As a result, it is not necessary for the league to take any formal action on the proposed arrangement,” Stern said. “However, we have reminded the Knicks of NBA rules that prohibit team personnel, including consultants, from having contact with players not eligible for the draft.”

LOL
wasn’t our pitching suppose to be terrible at the beginning of the season?
and our offense score like 6 runs at least every game?
its funny how things flipped and our offense is the problem and our pitching is great.
Watch Minaya deal with this problem and sign a bat and next year our pitching will lack. He needs to learn to correct problems and forsee future problems and correct them before they become a problem

OK, time for random comment of the day
I think it’d be really cool, if during the offseason, SNY showed like every single game of some season from the past (like 1995, something they have footage of every game for)

I've long felt
that when (if?) the Mets finally throw that no hitter that they will somehow lose the game.
blurgh! - me
CANT HAPPEN
Baseball has decided that if you give up any runs, it’s not a “no-hitter.” Even if, like, you don’t give up any hits.
See Andy Hawkins, July 1, 1990
Threw a no-hit game for the Yankees against the White Sox and lost, 4-0. MLB declared that it wasn’t a “no-hitter”

by MookieTheCat on Aug 12, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions
because the Yankees lost on the road, there was no bottom of the 9th
baseball decreed that it has to be 9 innings completed

I wouldn't mention that

I generally am a lot more careful in legal practice than in sports blog comments. I know this approach is backwards, but I’m weird like that…
by MookieTheCat on Aug 12, 2010 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions
So technically it's "no hit wins" not "no hitters"
But there is no indication in that box score that it didn’t count as a no hitter. There is no indication that it does (other than the 0 hits) either.
blurgh! - me
From the Wiki:
On September 4, 1991 the Committee for Statistical Accuracy, appointed by Commissioner Fay Vincent, changed the definition of a no-hitter to require that a pitcher throw at least nine full innings and a complete game. Since Hawkins played for the visiting team, the White Sox never batted in the ninth inning and Hawkins lost the credit for a no-hitter.
It's a game of redeeming features. ~ Bob Murphy
Got it
So it’s not the win per se. On the road if you give up the winning run without benefit of a hit in the bottom of the 10th you could still get a no hitter. Interesting. And it was retroactive. So it was a no hitter at the time. Ha ha.
blurgh! - me
I think Pascual and Melido Perez
each threw rain-shortened “no-hitters,” both of which were subsequently scrubbed from the record books as “no-hitters”
Coulda sworn
I’m WRONG. Sorry. They merely defined the no-hitter to require 9 innings (e.g., you can’t lose on the road or have a rain-shortened no hitter.)
Didn't lackey have a no hitter thru 7.2 but allowed a run
Ryan Miller was the true MVP.
I really hate Jerry.
The two games we won were shut outs
Go Johan!

This team is teasing me into gonig Saturday Night now
Since I’ll be in town. Plus, they will have lost Friday, so there is win potential.

Someone asked if there was a better starting 5
Well, Mets are in the top 10 in starter e.r.a., but are 22nd in xfip.
A large part of that is probably due to Citifield

Yes
Giants and padres have a better starting pitcher e.r.a., as do the Athletics, mariners (also nice pitcher parks), Cards being first, Braves…this is all without going to fip or xfip.
But Johan’s xfip is pretty bad, yet he always outperforms it. he has a low hr/fb, and not just due to the parks or luck i think. he has a very high IFFB%.
And in any event, last 3 starts, he is back. if Pelfrey is good Mike, and Niese stays hot, Dickey back on track, well, that’s a nice top 4.
Well
I said performed better. There FIPs are all reasonable. xFIP is tough cause they really haven’t given up any home runs. But a lot of that might be Citi Field.

But yes
I would probably take the Padres and Giants rotations. Maybe Yankees, too.

expected fielding independent pitching
based on batted ball profile.
Basically,
looks at GO/fly out ratio, how many line drives you’re giving up, etc., and then normalizes it to look like an ERA. It’s supposed to be a more advanced way to tell if your pitchers are more lucky than good.
It also regresses
HR/FB%
Which is why the MEts have all outperformed their xFIP to varying degrees,

That was pretty interesting
When asked about talking to the team regarding Frankie. He said not at all and cut off all questions regarding it.
