Contender/Pretender
Today, the Rangers signed Alex Cora.
Submitted without further comment, here are some moves by the (bankrupt) Rangers and (allegedly cash-strapped) Mets since the end of the 2009 season.
Rangers:
Traded Kevin Millwood (owed $12m in 2010) to the Orioles, with $3m, in what amounted to a dump (getting Chris Ray).
Mets:
Retained Luis Castillo (owed $12m from 2010-11).
***
Rangers:
Signed Colby Lewis to a high-reward contract worth $5M guaranteed.
Mets:
Signed non-tender candidate Jeff Francoeur to a contract worth $5M guaranteed.
***
Rangers;
Signed Alex Cora to a minor league contract.
Mets:
Signed Alex Cora to a Major League contract worth $2m guaranteed.
***
Rangers:
Traded Jarrod Saltalamacchia to the Red Sox instead of carrying three catchers.
Mets:
Reportedly declined offer by Red Sox for Rod Barajas; instead, carry three catchers.

Agree with all of those except Lewis
I realize he pitched in Japan for a year and changed the way he pitched, but his xFIPs in the majors were 5.25, 4.80, 5.69, 1.72(15 innings), and 5.51
Plus, Omar signed RA Dickey and Takahashi, who have worked out just as well for us.
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2010 Mets- Hey, we may suck, but what did you expect?
could also add last season waiver of Darren O'Day
this is one I never understood, after having a nice ST in 2009 O’Day made the club, and after 4 appearance with a0.00 ERA he was released
since being picked up by Texas
119 games 6-3 given up 70 hits, 27 walks 84 K with a 1.74 ERA under a 1.00 WHIP and under a .260 SLG against
how great woul dthat be in Citifield
yeah that move still makes my sanity cry
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

I am glad it is not just me
I never understood the move

They either thought he was hurt, or had an attitude problem.
Can’t think of any other reasons for the move.
Could be Omar and Co. just didn't value him
and thought he’d make it through waivers. I do remember that despite the ERA, he’d allowed a few inherited runners to score, although those games were right after his close friend Nick Adenhart died.
May you be locked in a battle of wits against Jerry Manuel.

lmao Im positive that's exactly what happened
and it’s probably why they were convinced Nieve wouldn’t pass through waivers. Cause if someone wanted O’day clearly everyones going to be jumping on Nieve.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
Also, they could have kept O'Day by putting Pelfrey on the 15-day DL
since he was going to miss a start, and called up Figgy. Instead, they exposed O’Day to waivers (and lost him), called up Figgy for 1 start, and then released Figgy to call up Casey Fossum. Luckily, Figueroa came back again.

I hadn't looked at O'Day's stats in a while.
Holy shite. A WHIP under 1.00 both last year and this year? He’s a poor man’s Mariano. .Actually, O’Day’s WHIP since leaving the Mets is lower than Rivera’s career WHIP. And Rivera’s WHIP at age 40 is the second lowest of his career. His lowest came when he was a youngster of 38.
Mo’s contract up this year. I’ll admit I thought 3/45 was a silly contract to give a guy going into his age 38 seasons. What on earth is he going to get? What do you give the best, and just about the oldest, reliever in baseball?
he isn't showing any signs of getting old
as you pointed out by his WHIP..and his ERA is awesome too
I think he has to get the same contract or close honestly, his tsats are just as good, and he still is the most relaible closer in the game.
as the Mets have shown by not having anyone clsoe to him in the last 15 years, it kills a team.

I think that's right.
As bizarre as it seems, 3/45 for a guy going into his age 41 season isn’t probably all that far off from what he’s likely to get.
I was going to buy a Josh Hamilton jersey just because
this pretty much settles it.
Hey !. Don't talk to my mami like that.
