• SP Juan Urbina: 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 0 BB, 5 K, 0 HR, 1 HBP (5-3, 5.16 ERA, 45.1 IP, 49 H, 12 BB, 37 K, 0 HR); will take that strikeout-to-walk ratio

Star of the Night

It’s gotta be Jenrry Mejia for his sterling outing. Seven innings, eight strikeouts, one hit, tons of ground balls, and, best of all, no walks. This is one of those times when a guy does everything right. And the Mets wanted to make him a reliever.

We have co-Goats today, both on the GCL Mets: Gilbert Gomez and Dylan Brown, batting .201 and .176, respectively. Both guys went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and neither got the ball out of the infield. Gomez is just 18 and has speed and a good frame, but he’ll need to start hitting the ball with a little more authority and figure out a way to get on base with more frequency. Dylan Brown is a 37th round draft pick out of the University of Tampa, and for a guy who will be 23 in October, he looks overmatched in the GCL. He has a little bit of pop in his bat, but .176 is .176, and he’s struck out 51 times in 125 at-bats. That’s dreadful.

System Roundup

• For the second consecutive game, Buffalo beat Rochester in walk-off fashion. With the Mets down 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Nick Evans drew a walk, and Mike Cervenak, the hero the day before, singled him over to third. The Russ Adams doubled home Evans, putting runners on second and third. And J.R. House then singled home Cervenak to give Buffalo the 4-3 victory. Mike Antonini made his third start for Buffalo and only gave up three runs over six innings but did allow ten hits and two walks. Boxscore
• Jenrry Mejia had an outstanding outing, throwing seven innings of one-hit, walking just two while striking out eight. And if that wasn’t enough, he also had ten groundouts compared to just two flyouts. Dylan Owen threw two perfect innings to complete the one-hitter. On offense, Josh Satin and Brahiam Maldonado hit home runs, and Binghamton put up five runs to win, 5-0. A strong day all around. Boxscore
• St. Lucie scored two runs in the third inning on Thursday, thanks to an RBI triple by Pedro Zapata immediately followed by an RBI single by Wilmer Flores. It wasn’t much, but it was all starter Jim Fuller needed, who went five innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven, as St. Lucie beat Palm Beach, 2-1. Scott Moviel pitched the final four innings—all scoreless, and with seven strikeouts!—to earn his fourth save of the season. Boxscore
• It was just one great pitching performance after another in the Mets organization yesterday. At Savannah, it was Taylor Whitenton, who threw seven scoreless innings to help the Sand Gnats beat Augusta, 3-0. Whitenton allowed only three hits and three walks and struck out six. Savannah only found five base hits themselves, including doubles by Alonzo Harris and Brian Harrison. Boxscore
• Well, Brooklyn didn’t see a great pitching performance. But they did score two in the seventh on a Wilfredo Tovar single off Staten Island reliever Bryant Cotton, and a ninth-inning insurance run proved necessary as Brooklyn won, 7-6. J.B. Brown added a three-run home run in a four-run first inning. Boxscore
• Javier Rodriguez returned to the Kingsport lineup, and while he didn’t do much personally, the Mets scored eight runs to defeat Burlington, 8-3. Boxscore
• GCL Mets Starter Juan Urbina pitched reasonably well but did allow three runs on six hits over five innings. It wasn’t enough; the offense scored just two fifth-inning runs, and the GCL Astros won, 3-2, robbing the Mets farm system of a perfect day. Boxscore
