Mets 7, Pirates 2: The Animal Is Out Of The Cage

Mike Pelfrey allowed two runs on six hits in eight innings. Chris Carter went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI single while David Wright and Jose Reyes each went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. All told, the offense exploded for 15 hits and seven runs -- a week's worth in both cases -- en route to a 7-2 victory over the Pirates.

Poem by Howard Megdal

Runs were once scarce; now scored in a torrent
No matter that Pirate pitching is abhorrent
Fifteen hits laced, Mets put up seven
Strangely, for one night, Pittsburgh equaled heaven

Mr. Clutch’s August-September RISP numbers will now look great.

Manuel: Expects Bay to be out for season

… not that it really matters at this point. Anybody, supposedly the Mets were not happy with his comments.

Story here.

Jerry is running his mouth again, he should learn to shut up. He said Bay is done for the year and tehn had to back peddle and say there is now a chance he may return.

LOL

“it appears he’s recovering nicely”

yeah except for the part where he’s still suffering from symptoms to the extent that he can’t partake in any physical activity.

i love this team so much.

Don't you just love a manager

who is really in touch with what is going on with his team. He certainly has his finger on the pulse of this team :-)

lmao I just read the article about Bay

I love that the reason they’re ruling him out for the season isn’t precaution due to suffering a major head trauma…it’s that they don’t think he’ll be ready in time to get a rehab stint in before the minor league season ends.

really, the onion couldn’t make these things up.

Good game tonight

Glad Carter did well. Maybe now he will see more playing time.

That idiot we call a manager

I love these quotes from Jerry:

“What has happened is we haven’t hit enough to let [Martinez and Ruben Tejada] evolve,” manager Jerry Manuel said. “It’s difficult to run them out there when we’re not scoring runs. There’s still somewhat of a thought that because they are young players, we should get them involved to a degree, but not to a degree that it hinders us from winning games.”

Could it be we don’t score any runs because of the crappy starters you keep playing, or maybe your managing? Seriously, if you keep running Francoeur out there every day is your solution to scoring runs, I think you need to be fired.

I went to a broadway show.

We won, but The Addams Family still looks better than Mets vs. Pirates.

Consequences will never be the same.

I think if Carter had started every game the last 2 months

this team would have about 6 more wins. I have nothing factual to base that on, I admit. But the dude can hit when given more than 1 at bat. I hear he is second in win probability added after Wright (per a Rubin post earlier). And his D isn’t as atrocious as everyone thought.

by David G on Aug 21, 2010 12:58 AM EDT reply actions

6 more wins sounds like a lot

but I think at least some of the losses wouldn’t have been as frustrating

Nothing like your starter puking in the tunnel between innings and

having your staff push you to 8 innings. Great part on their job of pushing players to try and justifiy “job security”. Kinda reminds me of last year the trainers not really checking Niese with his hamstring and making him throw a pitch until he collapesed. Next thing you know Razor Shines will be push Bay out on a wheel chair and dump him in LF.

I think I saw more "In play, run(s)"

and “In Play, no out” during this game than I’ve seen in the past month.

I thought GameDay was literally broken in the first.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but Jerry abuses the privilege.

Only 268 Comments for a Gamethread?

I lost power 3 times last night and spent most of the evening at a vegetarian pool party, but sheesh man. They finally have a good night and that’s all AA could put up? Damn.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

(click to embiggen)
Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
