after a good April
I really thought we got lucky..but wow did he ever fall off, along with Francouer it gave us nothing in the bottom of the lineup
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all

What bothered me is that it never seemed to occur to the FO that as of the middle of May
they had ALREADY gotten phenomenally lucky with Barajas, and
1) given his age,
2) the fact that it gets hotter as the season goes on and that’s particularly tough on catchers,
and
3) that there was no reason whatsoever to think that Barajas would keep this up indefinitely, particularly not in his mid 30s
that Manuel and Minaya couldn’t figure out that they should take their winnings instead of being almost certain of giving back the gift they got, by playing Barajas into the ground.
This has been one of the great and chronic failings of Minaya as GM (and of Manuel as a manager), to simply take any advantage that luck gives you and make sure you create a situation in which you’re almost certainly bound to give it back, whether by re-signing old players and making sure that you pay for that last, ugly year of their careers, or by taking someone like Nieve and if he happens to give you a month of good, extremely durable pitching, keep sending him out there at an unsustainable pace until he is certain to break down.
It’s incredible is what it is.
Next Catcher on the Roster will be?
I mean we have to have at least three catchers on the roster. Perhaps Jesus can catch as well

part of the fault also goes to the owner, though it still doesn't excuse the utter stupidity of the GM
The Dodgers wanted Casey Blake to fill a hole at third base, but they also didn’t want to pick up any of the roughly $2 million in salary remaining on his contract. In return for paying Blake’s remaining salary, the Indians were able to increase their return, getting Santana along with righthander John Meloan

That is as big or even bigger debacle than Kazmir. Santana looks pretty damn good and they got back Blake for 3rd? A large round of firings should ensue
by ScottfromPeekskill on Aug 22, 2010 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Eh
It’s up there but Santana wasn’t just a catcher old for his league not on any radars when they traded him. And Blake was a 4 war played for them the last 2 years, plus he was blocked by a martin who hadn’t started to suck and might have been relegates to dh. It’s bad but no where near kazmir.

by Gina on Aug 22, 2010 3:02 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I don't know, I remember almost any smart Dodger fan was furious about that deal as soon as it was announced.
He wasn’t projected to be as good as he has become, but the guy was still a catcher capable of switch hitting for power, so, you don’t trade that guy for a mid 30’s 3rd baseman that isn’t even particularly good at baseball.
Okay, maybe the not particularly good at baseball thing wasn't fair,
but he was a 35 year old 3rd baseman who at his best was going to give you and 800 OPS.
Yeah I agree it was a bad trade
my point was more it wasn’t anywhere near Kazmir bad.
mediocrity thy name is Wilpon- jdon
In retrospect it's worse, at least of now
but that’s not the Dodgers’ fault, more to the credit to the Indians than anything.

but Santana put up a .429 wOBA in 434 PA on the Dodgers A+ team with a staggering 15.9 %/16.9 % BB/K rate and .240 Iso. He was a huge prospect, it was just that noone but minor league savvy Dodgers fans knew about him.
by secret defense on Aug 22, 2010 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions
He was also 22 in high A ball who no one expected to stay
at catcher at the time. and if no one but dodgers fans, and only savvy ones at that, knew about him…then by definition he wasn’t a “huge prospect”. I think he wasn’t in the dodgers top 20 prospects by most scouts. He was a great find by the Indians and I agree it was a crappy trade just because it’s a young guy with clear upside for Casey Blake but it’s no where near on the level of Kazmir. Kazmir was widely recognized as an elite prospect and Zambrano never contributed to us, or anoyne else, after we traded for him, Blake was a 4.6 WAR player at a position of need for a play-off team last year. Santana was an intriguing prospect with some interesting peripherals but by no means a huge prospect, there are tons of guys with similar intriguing peripherals traded every year, people just point to Santana because he’s one of the rare occasions when that player actually reaches to the upside (just for example I’d say Ezquiel Carrerra and Luis Valbuena from the Putz trade are both similar type prospects and neither has really amounted to much at this point). Credit the Indians for great scouting they collect a bunch of guys like Santana and it pays off when one works out.

Don't understand Feliciano getting called up again
They have enough outfielders. Should have called up Turner or Satin. Or if they had to go outfield, call up freaking Duda.
if this had made total sense
it wouldn’t have been the mets
Hmm?
They’re fine on the IF right now, considering that Tejada can back up both MI slots and Hessman can back up CI. Feliciano is more defensively versatile than Carter, so he adds value there. If your point is that the Mets should send down Tejada in favor of Turner, I don’t have any argument with that. But this seems eminently sensible to me.
by sjohnson125 on Aug 22, 2010 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions
i think that's the crux of the issue
in that tejada is 20 years old, dismal at the plate and should not be with the big club.
Well Tejada should go down
but they are still fine in the outfield, when Carter plays, either Frenchy, Beltran or Pagan is available for a defensive replacement depending on who’s not playing. Feliciano just isn’t a major league hitter, he’s a slapper with no on base ability. Why not Evans, who can play infield and outfield? I know, who?
Tejada can
Can, he shouldnt.
